THE WEEKLY ADVERTISER 31 July 1891

London, ON, Middlesex County

Thomas Nicholson, Thorn Hedge Farm, West Williams, father of R. and S. Nicholson, the celebrated Shorthorn breeders, died July 27, aged 82 years. Deceased was a native of Lincolnshire, England, and was widely known and esteemed.

THE PARKHILL GAZETTE,   25 JULY 1912

The Late Robert Nicholson

[Note: a photograph of Robert Nicholson was provided.]

The rural population of Middlesex was deprived of one of its most influential members on Monday, June 22nd, when the late Robert Nicholson passed away at his home on the 16th con. of West Williams. His illness extended over a period of six months, developing from an attack of Jaundice into a malignant disease of the liver. He was born in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England in 1841, being at the time of his death 71 years of age. His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Nicholson, emigrated to Canada and settled on the 16th con. of West Williams in 1856, having spent two years in Whitby township. Robert Nicholson remained two years longer in Whitby, coming to West Williams in 1858. He was the oldest member of the firm of R. & S. Nicholson, the noted short-horn breeder. From small beginnings this firm has become famous among cattle breeders both in Canada and the neighboring Republic. When Mr. Nicholson settled on the farm on which he died, it was virgin forest, the market town being London. He was short of stature but very strong and rugged and he played a man‘s part in the pioneer life of West Williams. The farm as he leaves it to his son, is one of the beauty spots of the township. Many years ago he planted a glade of walnut trees at the front of the farm and set out orchard trees and a wind-break of evergreen trees. These have all grown until they make a magnificent showing. He enjoyed their beauty, to others he bequeaths their benefit. But of such deeds as that, the life of the pioneer was composed. Not for their own day and generation alone they labored. Those who came after them reaped the benefit of their toil. And what life could be spent with a higher purpose than to serve faithfully, to sow and water that others may reap. Mr. Nicholson took an active interest in the public life of his neighborhood. For many years he served as school trustee and was a prominent official of the Quarterly Board of the Methodist Church. He belonged to a family of remarkable men, who were endowed by nature with mental capacity far above the average. He had a love for knowledge and was a man who, through reading, attained to a liberal education and a wide outlook on life and its problems. His name stood for all that was steady and true and good and the place which he leaves vacant in the community will be hard to fill. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, three sons and two brothers. His sons are, George, on the homestead; William on con 16 West Williams, John Grey of Saskatoon and his daughter is Mrs. John McLachlan of Lamon. His brother Croft lives in Port Huron and Stephen on the adjoining farm. The funeral was held on Wednesday, interment taking place at Sylvan.

THE PARKHILL GAZETTE,  1 JULY 1915

LATE STEPHEN NICHOLSON

After several months of illness from valvular trouble of the heart, Mr. Stephen Nicholson passed away at his home, Elm Dale farm, concession 17, on Tuesday, June 29th. Mr. Nicholson was born near Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England, in the year 1842. With his parents and other members of the family, he came to Canada in 1854, settling in the Township of Pickering. In 1856, his father purchased the east half of Lot 19 on the 17th Concession from the Canada Company. From this small beginning, the father and three sons, Robert, Croft and Stephen, with indefatiguable industry, foresight and intelligence have left a fine competency for those who survive them. The deceased was counted one of the best judges of Shorthorns in Ontario, for which class of cattle he had a particular fondness. His fine herd of more than provincial fame in the prize ring is a splendid evidence of the intelligence displayed in developing so fine a herd from a small beginning. The deceased made two trips to Great Britain, where he selected several animals to improve the standard of their herd. Deceased was a man of more than average intelligence. He was an ardent student of all the important questions of the day. He was an extensive reader of the choicest literature; Scott, Dickens and Shakespeare being among his favorites. In religion he hated cant and hyprocisy. While he didn’t always agree with all that may have been said, yet he believed implicitly in the Essentials. His was the practical life. It was always a pleasure to spend a few hours with him in social intercourse. As an argumentative speaker he had few equals and could turn the weak points with telling effect upon his opponent. For several years when his health was comparatively good he was considered one of the best speakers in the Farmer’s Institute. His addresses were practical but clothed in the choicest English and rhetoric. Mr. Nicholson’s two brothers, Robert and Croft passed away during the past four years, he being the last of the family which were identified with the early settlement of West Williams. He is survived by his widow, three sons, Edgar and Alfred at home, Frank of Boston, Mass., three daughters, Mrs. Wesley Mathers of Stephen; Misses Hannah and Agnes of Winnipeg, Man. The funeral takes place today, Thursday, to Sylvan Cemetery. The Gazette extends the sympathy of a large circle of friends to the bereaved. [Note: a photograph of Stephen Nicholson was provided.]

STRATHROY AGE DISPATCH 12 MAY 1904

RACHEL (Conaway) WHITLOCK
The death took place in Forest on April 27th, of Rachel Whitlock, relict of the late John Whitlock, of Adelaide
Village, in the 89th year of her age.Deceased was born in Camden township, Lennox Co., in the year 1816 and was the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Conaway. She was married to Mr. Whitlock at Clark's Mills, near Kingston, and was the mother of 13 children, only four of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Mr. and Mrs. Whitlock lived for a while at Napanee and then came west to Strathroy, settling here when the railroad was being built, and for a couple of years boarding upwards of one hundred men who were engaged in building the road. Later they moved out to Adelaide, where they were living when Mr. Whitlock died in August 1879. Soon after her husband's death Mrs.Whitlock moved to Forest, and has since resided there making her home the last eight years with her daughter, Mrs. Jas. Freele. Of the four children who grew up, one son and one daughter pre-deceased their mother, viz. Gregory, who was drowned at Napanee, and Mrs. Frye, who died in Wisconsin. The two surviving are Mrs. Freele, of Forest, and Wm. Whitlock of Petrolia. She is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Deceased was a strong, vigorous woman and even after passing the allotted "three score and ten years" was remarkably well and active, but gradually old age began to tell upon her and as year by year went by she naturally became weaker, though always able to go about the house and a week previous to her death came down stairs. Her relatives had but a few hours' warning of approaching death, as she peacefully slept away. She was a member of the Methodist church and died as she had lived a consistent Christian. In her relations as wife and mother she was loving and faithful, a true help-mate to her husband. The funeral took place on Friday morning, April 29. After a short service at Mr.Freele's home, conducted by Rev. J.E. Ford, the remains were taken to Adelaide cemetery for interment. The bearers were six members of her church, viz.: Daniel and Davif Dunham, W. Gillis, G. Stewart, H. Baron and G. Proctor. At Adelaide six grandsons performed the sad duty. A memorial service was held in the Forest Methodist church on the following Sunday evening also conducted by her pastor, Mr. Ford.
