Passanger Pigeons
. 1860 May 10 - Pigeons innumerable have swarmed the air here about for many days past, & vast numbers have been killed by our sportsmen. On Friday last O. Stevens, Esq. killed 423 in the spaces of 4 hours; & on the following day Charlie Teetzel & Mr. D. O. Ramsay shot about 600 in 4 or 5 hours. In addition, others of our citizens have killed thousands. The Montezumis & Barber took about 115 dozen to Chicago the latter part of the week, where they readily sell at 50¢ a dozen. St. Joseph Traveller of May 2.

. 1913 May 6, Fined for Selling Beer. woman in Search of Husband Caused His Arrest.
Mrs Bessie Cook, S 7 St. ent to Charles Teetzels, 403 Osage Ave, in search of her husband, James, yesterday. Teetzel said he wasn't there but said she could find him at another pace. When she failed to find him she returned to 'teeters & demanded the he tell he where James was. Teetzel offered her a drink of beer instead & she cause his arrest. This morning Judge Brady fined him $200 & 300 days in jail for selling beer.

1921 Jun 9 - Charles F Teetzel, one of St. John's old & respect residents, passed away at his home in the east part of the city Last Friday morning, June 3, 1921 at 5:40 o'clock. Burial Fairview Cemetery. Since residing with the people of this city & community many of them have become his friends. He had always a pleasant greeting for them & a manner of life that won him the respect of all & now that he has been called away suddenly will be greatly missed.
Charles Franklin Teetzel was burnin St. Joseph, Michigan, July 14, 1851. He was united in marriage with Miss Emma J Slater at Waterviet Michigan, Sept 29, 1878. 3 children came to bless this union: Adella, Floyd & Clyde. They moved with their family to Harper, Kansas in August 1897 & to St. John in 1908. Mr Teetzil was aged 79y 10m 19d.
Mr Teetzel enjoyed the benefit of being raised in a Christian home & early inlet made a profession of religion & united with the Methodist Episcopal Church.
About 3 years Mr Teetzil suffered a paralytic stroke which impaired his health. An attack of acute indigestion was the immediate cause of his death, he being ill but a few hours & his sudden taking away was a severe shock to the members of his family & friends.
Among relatives left to four his loss are his wife, 3 children: Mrs John Harper, Floyd Teetzel of this city & Clyde Teetzel of Wellington; 2 sisters: Mrs JE Teetzel of Harper & Mrs Del Moulton of NY; 3 grandchildren: Lloyd Harper, Lois Fay Teetzel & Earl Teetzel of this city & Charles Allen Teetzel of Wellington.
Among friends who came from a distance to pay their last respects to Mr Teetzel were Mr Mrs LA Haskins, Mr Mrs Perry Pearl, all of Harper.

Warning relative to the 1st & 2nd Concessions N.D.S. & S.D.S.
Except in a few instances the enumerator failed to distinguish between North & South of Dundas Street. It has therefore been impossible for the copyist to be certain of the location of a large proportion of those lots lying in the 1st & 2nd Concessions.
Any question is best answered by referring to the Trafalgar Township Abstract Index at the Halton County Registry Office at Milton, Ontario. The first census of the Province of Upper Canada was taken in the year that it became Canada West, 1841.
About 1948 when the researching for the Oakville history was going forward, the 1841 Census of Trafalgar Township was discovered in the Public Archives of Canada at Ottawa. Unlike its successors which were recorded in ledgers, the data for this first census was written on a tremendous sheet of paper some 6 or 8 feet square.
Having seen little use, this sheet was then in very good condition & my sister, Dr. Juliet Chisholm, took a copy of much of the essential data. The names run down the left hand side, the headings across the top & these are divided perpendicularly & horizontally by lines forming a grid. The last time this census was seen it was so torn as to be almost unreadable. For this reason the following transcript was made of the data."

. 1856 Jun 5 - Berrien County. We lean from the St. Joseph Traveler that the following officers were chose at the corporation election in that village on the 5th: Trustee: Hiram Teetzel. At a meeting of the citizens of St. Joseph, after discussion relative to the proposed extension of the Grand Trunk road across the State, $20,000 were subscribed & a committee appointed to canvass the town for further subscriptions.

Taverns. The first house of entertainment in Watervliet as a boardinghouse for mill hands, opened by W W McKee in a building which stood opposite the site of Walden's store. This building was afterwards answered in two, & is still doing duty. on-half as Brat's blacksmith shop & the other as Mr. Teetzel's residence.* Primarily intended as a boarding-place for the millhands, but as both places accommodated travelers, they were taverns, although not call so.

. Is this ELIZABETH is the daughter of JOHN HAGER & POLLY BUCK of Hagerville, Wentworth Co., Ontario.
The Palermo Cemetery on Dundas Concession 1 SDS, Lot 29. A log church was built in 1812 on the low where the cemetery now is. The Wesleyan Methodists were first mentioned in an article in the Christian Guardian in 1851. Two frame churches stood on either side of the cemetery and can be seen on the 1858 Tremaine map. In 1867, 17 years before the general union of Methodist churches, they untied & built the present church. At the time of the union, a small minority continued to worship in the small frame church. Eventually it was closed & used as a stable. Two of the earliest burials listed are for Alexander Rose died Sept 27 1813 & Elizabeth Hager Feb 12 1815.

The subject of this sketch and originator of this phrase was the late Joseph Hager, of Saint Joseph Michigan. He was a son of John Hager, who moved from Palermo, Ont., to St. Joe, Michigan, & later to San Francisco, Cal.
John Hager was a brother of Lawrence Hager of Palermo, Ont.
Mary Hager King of St. Joe, Mich., is a living sister of Joseph Hager, & the mother of the late Ben King, the famous poet of Michigan who wrote; "For my soul it seems caught in the old times undertow, & I'm floating down the river St. Joe."
