10. | GILBERT GOODMURPHY was born about 1824 in Wellington, Hillier Twp, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada (son of JOHN GOOD MURPHY and DEBORAH DAVIS); died on 26 Oct 1878 in Demorestville, Sophiasburgh Twp, Ontario, Canada. Notes:
Guessing that Gilbert was born in Wellington, Ontario, if not, could have been born in Kingston, Ontario.
In 1842, Gilbert was living in Percy Twp at Lot 20 (South Half) on the 5 Concession with his mother Deborah and his younger brother, Francis.
Deborah purchased this property from William Forsyth & J.B. Forsyth on October 21, 1884, but obviously Deborah and her sons had moved there in 1842.
Deborah sold the property to Gilbert on March 18, 1848. The 1848 Census has Gilbert listed as the residing owner of this Lot, residing there with his wife (no name given), along with a widow born in Ireland (obviously his mother) and another young male (obviously his younger brother Francis).
One could presume that Deborah had the foresight to pass ownership to Gilbert in 1848 as it is believed she died the following year.
Gilbert is listed at Lot 20 in the 1850, 1851 and 1861 Censuses for Percy Twp.
The 1851 Census lists a Catherine as the wife of Gilbert.
The 1861 Census lists a Polly as the wife of Gilbert, and Eliza recorded in her Genealogy, that Gilbert married a Polly Jones.
On December 26, 1863 he sold the property to James Greenley.
The 1871 Census for Hillier Twp lists a Gilbert Murphy as residing on the 5th Concession - Lot 66H - 80 acres. This Gilbert is married to a Mary and had four daughters.
It may be that Mary and Polly are the same person - just the way it was recorded.
It is believed that Gilbert must have moved back to Prince Edward County after selling his Percy Twp property in late 1863.
Lot 67, 5th Concession of Hillier Twp, runs norrh and south of Burr Road, east closer to Hwy 62 at Crofton.
Just east of Gilbert, also on Lot 67 is Benjamin Pine. Benjamin's son Sylvester Pine married Deborah Goodmurphy.
The 1881 Census for Hillier Twp lists an Anna Murphy, age 50, and widowed, with a daughter Melissa, age 10.
The Ontario Archives lists Gilbert Murphy as dying on October 27, 1878 suddenly from the effects of intemperance !!!
The petetion from his widow has his name as GILBERT GOODMURPHY and her name as MARY GOODMURPHY.
He died leaving no Will or Last Testament. His estate valued at $700.00 was awarded to his lawful widow Mary Goodmurphy.
It is possible that Catherine, Polly, and Mary are all the same person. Sometimes people had a common name that they were called by, and that may be what the Census taker wrote down.
Melissa is buried in the Wellington Village Cemetery alongs with her parents,
Gilbert and Mary !!!
The oldest daughter, Deborah Jane, married Sylvester Pine. She is buried in the McFaul Cemetery on County Road 1, which is just west of the junction of County Road 1 and Town Line Road.
GILBERT married Mary Polly Anna JONES before 1850. Mary (daughter of Lewis JONES and Lavina Mary CROSS) was born in 1829 in Ontario, Canada; died on 14 May 1897 in Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
