    Killed in a freak accident at the smithy. According to an account in a booklet self-publsihed for the family by Elaine Bradshaw in 2016: "When James jumped (onto a wagon to inspect some farm machinery to be repaired) the horse spooked, throwing him to the ground, then backed up so that the cartwheel rolled over James' neck. He died instantly." (ref: "James Jeffrey, Head Gardener at Caversham Park 1888-1894")
