    Notes:

. Dear Friend, I have done extensive research on John Brown Lawrence and the Lawrence Family. I think you may have copied some tree that had a number of incorrect attachments: Briefly, John Brown Lawrence, born 1728, Upper Freehold,
His only TWO wives: Anne Alice Leoanrd (1 child) & Martha Tallman (10 children).
John B is indeed the son of Elizabeth Brown & Elisha Lawrence.
. John was an Anglican, but not a reverend. He was involved in raising a salary for the unpaid Anglican minister in Burlington, NJ. He is a very interesting person with a great many references. Further info can be found on my tree All2gether, on the Rootsweb.com

So the question is which John Lawrence is your ancestor. For instances, he is not the John Lawrence, from Connecticut, who signed many documents for Gen. Washington.

During the Revolution, John B Lawrence, was the Mayor of Burlington, NJ - after NYC, then the 2nd largest city in the USA - John Lawrence protected Burlington from burning & pillage by the German Hessians mercenaries hired by the British. For this bravery, on the contrary, he was falsely accused of siding with the British, dispossessed of his property, imprisoned & lost his lawyer's practice. From 1783 to 1795 he participated in NJ elections - i.e. he did not flee to Canada, as sometimes asserted.

While in the Burlington Goal, he met the injured British General John Graves Simcoe. It is my belief that it was here the John Lawrence discussed with Gen. Simcoe, JB Lawrence's previous attempts to establish an new utopian settlement on the Ohio River. In 1793 John G Simcoe was appointed Governor General (like a commander/ president) of Upper Canada, now known as Ontario. Gov. Simcoe invited John Brown Lawrence (& others) to Toronto to help in the administration of the new utopian Canada as envisioned by Simcoe himself. Some ground work was done but either Simcoe nor John Lawrence lived must longer after that time.
I hope this is not too confusing. Most sincerely, Pat Ahlberg, U.E.
