. 1878 Aug 16 - Storm in Garafraxa. A severe hail & rain storm accompanied by wind & thunder, passed over Garafraxa. It has destroyed the crops, leveling standing grain & any gain that was near ripe, threshing three fourths of it off on the ground & king sad havoc with turnip fields when not sheltered by bush. The storm lasted about 40 minutes. hail the size of musket ball, a little flattened, fell enlarge quantities riddling turnips, potatoes & cabbage, leaving beautiful fields a complete wreck. The storm passed over 2nd Concession between Lots 10 -20, & appeared to have visited upper Bichol & Peel twps. before it came here. some had their windows broken with the hail.

. Belwood Fall fair was a wonderful fair which carried on for 2 days, showing beautiful horses cattle, pigs, Etc. Lots of booths ere on the grounds selling homemade candy, gingerbread, honey in the comb, etc .A merry go round run by horsepower was an outstanding attraction. The first the women's work - vegetables, butter, eggs, flowers etc, & they were shown in the drill shed (town hall of today) on the market square. These grounds were used for picnics, baseball & any gathering that were going outside. It was so beautiful down amongst the trees beside the river.

US CIVIL WAR:
. 1856 Jun 14 - Houston, Missouri, Father Richard Patterson resided here. Although Mary Patterson was clearly born in Ontario, her family referred to her as an American. This would indicate she had lived in Missouri with her father & siblings.
Granddaughter Marie Felker recalled that Mary Patterson said the reason the family moved up north to Canada was because of the coming civil war which was from 1861-65. In some towns in the southern States, you would be run out if your favoured President Lincoln. Mary was 7 years old in 1856 in Missouri. Mary would only have been 13y at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 & Catchpole grandparents are already dead. Notwithstanding Mary Patterson was married Jan 1, 1872 to John Felker in Belwood, Ontario.
The farm on Garafraxa was pretty far from anywhere, except for the Methodist log cabin which was a short walk away. Douglas, as Belwood was formerly known, was known for its cattle which they would ship by train to Toronto. - PJ Ahlberg.

History of Belwood. In 1854 Mr Skeen built a mill, which was a great advantage as before this the pioneers were obliged to put 50 lbs. of wheat another backs & walk to Fergus or even sometimes to Guelph. When they goat oxen they felt they could with for nothing better. Mr. Dixon was the miller & all the farmers brought their wheat & oats to be ground into flour & oaten by water power.
Mr. Cyrus Sargent drove the mail & stage to Fergus for a time & used to blow a horn all the way down the street so everyone know when he arrived with parcels & mail.
There was a woolen mill where the wall as taken to the mill in fleeces. It was made in a roll about an inch across. You had to be very careful of these rolls. They were so soft & could easily be broken. The farmer took them home to his wife who spent many weary hours spinning them into yard. They made their dyes from different kings of baRk of trees in the bush.

. 1870 Jul 1 - In West Garafraxa Township the storm hit with much more force than in the Fergus &Guelph areas. Damage was most severe in the vicinity of the 6th Line, suggesting another tornado touched down there. About a dozen barns lost all or a portion f their roofs. Peter McDougall discovered his small barn relocated to a nearby bush.In the Belwood area, then known as Douglas, the storm was the worst that anyone could remember. Residents there watched the black cloud advance from the northwest. A cloudburst began about 8pm. Some residents reported hearing a load roar, suggestive of full-fledged tornadoes. Rail fences were demolished, with the rails scattered like toothpicks. Wind & rain trashed grain crops. A strip of uprooted trees.
Damage was most intense along the 5th & 6th Lines.There were many casualties to cattle in West Garafraxa, most killed by falling trees & branches. One tree killed 3 yearling cattle, which had sought refuge under its branches. As the storm reached its peak, Dick & Bill East arrived at the farm of Sam Allen for a visit. As they tied their horses, the wind lifted the roof from the barn & dropped it on Dick East. Unconscious from a blow to the head, he survived 15 minutes. Brother Bill survived without a scratch.
As an encore, nature provided another storm 2 nights later, on July 22, 1870. That one was less destructive than the earlier storm, & struck shortly before midnight. Few people got much sleep that night due to a continuous display of lightning & ground-shaking thunder that kept up until about 4am. A few barns & trees were hit with lighting for the second time in 2 days. There was one major fire chalked up to lightning during that second storm. John Taylor lost his barn, with a large quantity of grain & all his implements. The fire flared up again about noon the following day, but was extinguished with the help of neighbours.

. HOUSTON, TEXAS CO., MISSOURI is the county capital. It is located on a hill, which terminates on the north in a bluff at Brushy Creek. St. Louis 140 miles SW & Kansas City 200 miles SE. he town was incorporated June 29, 1847, & postal service was extended the next January. - Richard Patterson settled in Texas county seat of Houston. During the Civil War (1861-65) the Houston courthouse was destroyed twice.

. SPRINGS & CAVES at t Houston - The Blankenship Springs are located two & one-quarter miles north of Houston, in a beautiful dell near Piney River. There are many springs, with as many different kinds of water, all of which unite & go sweeping over the pebbles, upon which is left a beautiful golden bronze. But few of these springs have been analyzed. They are in a romantic place, & the picturesque scenery cannot be excelled. A fine cave near the hotel, which has been used for keeping fresh meats, milk, butter, etc., is superior to anything ever used for that purpose. The temperature is 59 degrees. There are many other caverns, not only around Houston, but throughout the county.

. CIVIL WAR: Alternate raids by the contending parties left it a barren waste, so that 1865 found the county almost de-populated. ...The town was destroyed twice during the war, & when peace was proclaimed she had not a single inhabitant, nor was there even a barn standing within her present limits. It took a long time to recover from this blow. For some time the site was occupied by a few people who lived in shanties hastily thrown up between showers, & a store, the proprietors of which handled only a few necessaries of life. But the lands surrounding the town were too valuable to remain idle very long, & those who had been driven away by the troubles of the times came back to their old homes & went to work. Political differences were forgotten, & new houses took the places of the old.
