. Mark Tovel married in England, first 1811, Hannah Oakes, 1789 - Jul 1832, Guelph - 11 Tovel children;
married second, 4 Aug 1842, Guelph, Canada, to Miss Catchpole;
married third 1846, Guelph, to Hannah ANN Elkerton, 1825 England to 1895 Guelph, buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Plot E 25-2; 5 Tovell children.

. TOVELL, Mark , d., son of a pay officer in the British Army, was b. near Lowestoft, in Suffolk Co., Eng., in about 1769. He was a farmer in England, &
m1. 31 Dec 1811, to Hannah Oakes in that country at Cratfield, Suffolk, England. He came to Canada with his wife & family on the "Queen Caroline," in 1832, being 8 weeks & 3 days in making the passage from London to Quebec. He left his family in Hamilton for a month, while he came to Guelph to secure a house.
The family arrived in Guelph in July 1832, & occupied a house on the estate of the late Hon. Johnson Ferguson Blair, on the outskirts of Guelph.

Mr. Tovell farmed until his death. He was a Congregationalist, being a strict churchman, & a Reformer.
He d. 1844, aged 75, & Mrs. Tovell, d. 22nd of July, 1832, just 2 weeks after arriving in Guelph.
He later m2. a Miss Catchpole, who also predeceased him.

He again m3. (c 1844) Mrs. Elworthy.

Sarah, m. the late George Sunley, & later T. H. Taylor (d.), & still lives in Guelph;
Mark (d.); Mrs. Ford (d.), Guelph; Mrs. Busby, Guelph; George (d.); Charles (d.), & Nathan (d.). John, b. 1812, was a carpenter & joiner, & lived nearly all of his days in Guelph. He m. Mary A. Hoskin, who survives him, & lives in Cleveland with her only surviving daughter, who m. Reuben, son of Nathan Tovell.

Samuel Tovell, b. 1814, d. 1897, aged 83, set. in 1841 on Lot 16, Con. 6, Eramosa Tp., which he cleared. He was a broad minded man, & a much respected citizen; a consistent & active member of the Disciples church. He m. first, Eliza Darby.
Issue: Jonathan, Robert, & David, Luther Tp., & William, Eramosa. William m. Martha Stewart. He owns & operates lot 14, Con. 5, Eramosa Tp., & is a very prosperous farmer.
Issue: Gordon, Winnipeg; Frank, at home; David, in Customs House, Toronto; Jennie, at home; Ethel, at home; Kenneth, Rochester; Horace, Erin Tp. Samuel Tovell, m. Janet Butchart. Issue: Agnes (d. unm); Mrs. George Williams, Toronto Junction; Edmund, Hamilton; Charles (d. unm); Amos, m. Lois Black, is a Disciple minister, Guelph.

Jonathan Tovell, b. 1816, is still living, age 89. He set. in Eramosa Tp., 1842, on Con. 6, Lot 15. He was a Councillor for 27 years, & Constable for over 50 years. He is a Methodist & a Liberal, & m. Maria Irvin in 1842.
Issue: Japheth, Toronto Junction; Rev. Isaac, Methodist minister, Toronto; John, Puslinch Tp.; Henry, Walkerton; Dr. Matthew, Sydenham; Irvin, on homestead; Mary, at home; Annie, m. J. W. Oakes, License Inspector, Guelph.

James Tovell, b. 1819, & d. 1854, became a carpenter & builder on Douglas St., Guelph, & also an undertaker. He m. Maria Darby, who d. 1898, age 75. Issue: Mrs. Hiram Black, Edward J., John (d. infancy); George (d.); Nathan (d.); Mrs. John Mitchell (d.). He was a Congregationalist, & a staunch Liberal. Of this branch, Edward J., b. in Guelph, in 1840, is a carpenter, builder & architect. He m. Esther A. Starkweather.
Issue: William J., Lena, & Lily (d.); Frank J., Arthur (d.); Alice M., Bert, & Ernest.

Mark, Jr. Tovell, b. 1820, & d. 1895. He was a chair & cabinet maker as well as a carpenter & painter in Guelph, & was a natural mechanic, & very handy with tools. He also had a fine apiary. He m. Hannah Elkerton in 1846, who d. in 1895, age 68. [Buried Woodlawn Cemetery, Plot E Lot-25-2.]
Their surviving issue: Joseph, Charles, Robert, Mark, 3rd, & William. Of this branch, Joseph, b. Guelph, in 1848, with the exception of a few years in Toronto, has always lived in Guelph, where he learned his trade. In 1871, he started his harness & saddlery shop, & in 1881, built the Tovell Block, where he has since successfully conducted the business, being one of the prominent men of the city. He has always refused to hold office, but in politics is a Liberal, & in religion, a member of the Methodist church. He m. first, Mana, dau. of the late James G. Wright, Jr., & after her death, in 1900, he m. Rachel, also a dau. of Mr. Wright. Issue: Walter, with his father in business; Dr. Garnet B., dentist; George, d. Lockport, N.Y.; Charles, d. Lockport, N.Y.; Nathan m. Hannah, sister of J. G. Wright, Jr., & has a son Reuben, in Cleveland, who m. a dau. of John, eldest son of John Tovell.

. SUNLEY, George died March 1857, 1846 listed as a merchant, 1849 listed as a member of the fire company. The election for Guelph & the township it was part of was held in Thorp's Assembly Room at the British Hotel on January 7, 1850 with about 300 persons present. George Sunley was a candidate for the Reform Party & he was elected to Town Council with 251 votes. The first meeting of this council was held at the Frog Pond Tavern, on Eramosa Road on January 20, 1850 & the next at Alex Blythe's Tavern at Marden. 1852-1853 Town Councillor, 1853.
