. 1850 Palermo. An order called the Palermo sons of temperance was founded in 1850. Neighbors helped each other a long long ago. When ladies had babies nearby ladies would come to be midwives & help. There were bees too where neighbors would help each other building houses & barns or quilting blankets.

. 1854 Mar 23 - Selection of a Candidate for Halton. From the Oakville Sentinel. A great crisis Has arrived in Canada, it behoves every man to put aside personal feelings & come forward for the rescue of the Country for the present unscrupulous administration. We the undersigned, Elects of Halton Co., being convented at the the Inn of Mr. Thos. H Thompson, Milton, this 23 March 1854 feel that we have the best reason to be dissatisfied therewith the premisses of Reform, Retrenchment & the great question of Clergy Reserve [lands] …We therefore deem it our duty to choose a Representative we trust, will be faithful to our interest & not support any Ministry in so extravagant a course in the next House of Assembly. * 1854 Oct 23, Monday, Fall Assizes, Hill Vs. Lyons.
[Slightly abbreviated version- PJA.]
Dr Hill, resident in Buffalo, against Mr. Lyons, a merchant in Milton, Halton Co., upon 2 promissory notes of £200 each, besides interest. …Dr. Hill conveyed some 10 or 12 acres of land in the town of Amherst to Mr. Teetzel. He received $200 or $300 for it. Counselor for the defense, Mr. Eccles address the Jury at some length stating that
Mr. Eccles addressed the Jury. Teetzel, a man of the worst description of character, a deep, cunning, half Yankee schemer, formerly kept a store at a place called Milton & getting involved & not among in generally known transferred his whole stock in trade to Mr. Lyons a clerk in his employ, by a bill of sale for £1,683. 6 pence. For this some Mr. Lyons aged notes but on the following morning Teetzel came to Lyons & said he wanted notes down exactly to the amount of the debt he wished to pay. While drawing these notes plaintiff assumed that Mr. Teetzel picked up the 2 of the notes made on the previous day, the 28th June,1852 & put them in his pocket & had no doubt sold them. Mr. Eccles said Mr Teetzel was trying to settle up all his debts.
. The learned Counsel here read a list of the notes taken up by Mr. Lyons & read an affidavit made by Teetzel, while on arrest in Buffalo on the instance of Isaac Buchanan of Hamilton, Ontario.
The transaction had been full implanted between Teetzel & Lyons & the 2 notes had been surreptitiously obtained by Teetzel. Lyons pronounced them a forgery & it was not until he came down to Toronto & saw the notes in his own hand writing bearing the date of 28 June 1852 that he discovered they were 2 of the first batch of notes given to Teetzel which he had superseded by new notes made on 29th of June. The transaction between Lyons & Teetzel had been fraudulent on the part of Teetzel, ruled the the judge.
. Eglantine Black was employed by Teetzel & continued in the shop after Mr. Teetzel left Canada. He recognized the bill of sale drawn between Teetzel & Lyons. He was aware Mr. Teetzel was trying to settle up all his debts & was one of Teetzel's assignees. Mr Black identified the inventory made by him; also account to sale from June 3 - up to the time the goods were transferred to Mr. Lyons.
. James Laidlaw assisted in taking stock in Teetzel's shop sometime before the the goods were transferred to Loyd's. The cost of the goods on the shelves amounted to £765 6s 4.5d.
. Joseph Bell subscribing witness to the bill of sale. Knew the notes given at the time of sale. The notes were given on the day of bill of sale was executed. [brother-in-law to Mathias T]
. John White, Trafalgar Twp. remembered Mr Teetzel. I understood that he was leaving for the States, because he could not meet the demand upon him. He know of the transfer of goods to Lyons & that the had thank notes from Lyons for the amount, but not the date of the notes. Teetzel wanted me take take some of the notes. I objected to the notes for some reasons. I know Teetzel sent one a large quantity of flour. Would not say that the was not aware there was anything dishonest in leaving Canada.
. Matthias Teetzel, testified to having sold goods to Mr. Lyons, for £1,683 5p. He gave name noted to that amount on 28 & 29th of June; he gave me notes of £2000 & odds; on the 29th some of the notes were changes. Witness here referred to a memorandum book for the amount of the notes, entered were all made on 28th; I entered none of the substituted notes. I made a conveyance of my land to my father before I left Canada; did not think he made any mention in his affidavit of the good will of the businesses; the affidavit was made in order to get a discharge.
Mr. M. Cameron submitted that Mr. Eccles was wasting the time of the Court, however, the Judge ruled it was justified. Mr. Eccles here read the affidavit made by Mr. Teetzel in Buffalo.
After lengthened examination, the Judge summed up & the jury having retired shortly, returned into court with the verdict for the plaintiff of £400. Court adjourned 10 o'clock.

Note: William Durie Lyon, born 1825 Glasgow, Scotland in 1825 - d.1893. Landed UC 1831. Clerk in Mathias Teetzel's store in Milton. Merchant, Milton postmaster, a member of the mercantile firm of White, Martin & Lyon. He also served as Postmaster for Milton. He was Mayor of Milton from 1862-1866.

In addition there were the Canadian born children of the above, who also moved to Michigan.

- Attachment, issued out to wit: 3 of Her Majesty's Court of Queen's Beach, on the 2nd day of July, 1853 to me directed, against the estate, real as well as personal, of MATHIAS TEETZEL, an absconding or concealed debtor, at the suit of RICHARD BENNER & Charles H. Donnelly, for the sum of £270. 15 S & 6 six pence, I have sealed all the estate, real as well as personal, of the said Mathias Teetzel & unless the said Mathias Teetzel return within the jurisdiction of the said Court & put in Bail to the action, or cause the claim of the said Richard Benner & Charles H. Donnelly to be discharged within 3 calendar months from the first day of the publication of this Notice, all 'the estate, real or personal, of the said Mathias Teetzel or as much thereof as may be necessary will be held liable for the payment, benefit & satisfaction of the claim of the said plaintiff, as well as for payment, benefit or satisfaction of the claim or claims of such other plaintiff or plaintiffs as shall or may take proceedings against the property or effects of the said Mathias Teetzel, within 6 months from the issuing of the above Writ.

"Footnote: In 1860 you will not find Benton Harbor town or City, which later became known as the twin city to St. Joseph. Benton Harbor was mainly swampland & was bordered by the Paw Paw River, through which a canal was built, hence the "harbor" in the city's name. The canal was opened in about 1862. In the early 1860's, the settlement was given the name of Brunson Harbor. In 1865 the name of the settlement was changed to Benton Harbor in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri Senator who helped Michigan achieve statehood."

. 1863 Jan., Detroit, Michigan Farmer, Volume 2, St. Joseph County, Cranberry Culture:
The culture of this fruit has been prove to be entirely feasible in many localities & we believe there are many acres of marsh lands in this vicinity which can be profitably devoted to this berry, which always commands a high price in market. Mr. M. Teetzel of this village has about half an acre of land devoted to their culture in the Twp. of Benton, which now promises to yield very large profits on the outlay. Last week we made a careful inspection this ground with Mr. Teetzel in person. The land is ordinary marsh land. The 1st step in its preparation was to take off the surface to the depth of perhaps one foot. This new surface was then covered with a thin stratum of dry sand. The field is then ready for the plants which are obtained from marshes wherever they can be found & are set in rows about 10 in. or a foot ...A small creek running near is turned on to the field at pleasure by means of a dam & aqueduct, so that it can be submerged to any desirable depth.

Resolved by the Senate & House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be & is hereby, authorized to issue an American register to the Canadian-built steamer " Mohawk," now owned by Warren Chapman, George Parmelee & Matthias Teetzel, of Saint Joseph, in the State of Michigan: Provided,That nothing herein contained shall in anywise affect any legal proceedings now pending in regard to the said steamer Mohawk." * 1864 Sep 27 Serenade. Our friend Teetzel, democratic nominee for Representative, was serenaded by the St Joseph pass &, on Saturday eying last, as his residence. The band was accompanied by he McClellan Club. After the band had disbursed seers airs, Mr. Teetzel presented himself & made a short speech, replete with sound democratic doctrine, pleading himself if elected strictly to adhere to the principles laid down by Jefferson & adhered to by the fathers & close by tending acknowledgments for this mark of personal regard of his fellow townsmen; thereupon short stirring speeches were made by Messrs. OD Rector, P Henoch & FH Stevens, which were responded to with a will. Mr. Teetzel then invited his guests to partake of refreshments, where at the table several impromptu spells were made. The club then stranded BC Hoyt, where too, they were kindly received & courteously treated, when they finally separated with 3 rousing cheers for McClellan & Pendleton, 3 for the democratic nominees, 3 for the country ticket & 3 for Mathias Teetzel. - St. Joseph Pioneer.

. 1865 Apr 29 - Obituary. Our community has just been overshadowed with a deep gloom by the death of Mr. MATHIAS TEETZEL who died on Wed. morning after an illness only 16 or 18 hours. Mr. Teetzel had been identified for many years with the business interests of this place & has always been prominent for integrity, promptness & enterprise. Few men have done more to develop the resources & add to the welsh of the village & surrounding country. Hiss loss will be keenly left by all but especially by the farmers with whom, as a grain dealer, he had become deservedly popular. He was just in the prime of life & was busy with plants for extending & enlarging his business for the season. His untimely death will be widely felt & deeply deplored. The bereaved family will receive the sympathy & condolence of the community.

. Palermo Cemetery on Dundas Concession 1 SDS, Lot 30:
He sold the NE corner of his farm to be used for a cemetery & churchyard in 1818 to serve the community. He received £2 10 shillings as payment. The agreement said the land was "forever for the proper use of a place to bury the dead for them & as many of the inhabitants of Trafalgar Township lying between 12 & 16 mile Creeks as many think proper to join them & also for a meeting house & a School House should the same at any time be required." The cemetery plots were to be16 feet square & one of these lots were assigned to each family. For Charles Frederick Teetzel & his heirs there was to be a tract of land one square rod in size for a burial plot to be protected forever.

A log church was built on the front of the cemetery in 1812 to serve the Episcopal Methodist congregation of Laurence Hager. In 1851 a frame church was built beside the log church & it became the home of the Wesleyan Methodist Congregation. In 1867, a new modern church was built across the road for the Episcopal Methodists, but many still chose to worship at the old building. The log church was eventually used as a stable for some years. This was 17 years before the many Methodists united to become the United Church of Canada.

After his wife, Mary Tufford, died of consumption in 1856, Charles Frederick Teetzel stayed on his farm for 6 months. Ill health caused him to move to Milton for medical care. He died shortly after. His son, Mathias Hager, purchased land in St. Joseph's, Michigan & moved there about this time.

The Canadian branch of this family spell their name Tufford. The New Jersey family spell it Dufford & it has also been recorded as Du Ford * Tofort, which was its original spelling. Philip Tofort Sr. & Philip Jr. arrived at Philadelphia on the ship 'Robert and Oliver', 11 September, 1738. They settled in what was then called the Long Valley (German Valley), New Jersey. In his will dated 16 February, 1767, Philip Tofort, Sr., names his wife, Catherine, sons Adam & George, daughter Mary Magdalena & grandson George Stephen, son of Jacob Tofort. The NJ family history states that Jacob was disinherited because he married an Indian maiden.
George Tufford served in the War of 1812 with the 4th Lincoln Regiment.

Note8: Various sources state the Joseph Abraham ran the first inn called the Green Bush at Steeles & Yonge at the North east corner. In an area noted for tall trees, it must have been a large balsam tree indeed that stood in front of the Inn. The NE corner belong to his brother-in-law Wm. L. Willson. Further research may show the exact location of Lawrence's tavern.

Regulations included: No excess drinking, no profanities or gambling; sufficient sheds, stables and/or barns were required for the patron's horses, carriages & wagons. The innkeeper should also have at least 4 good beds in addition to those for his family. All of these regulations were controls to limit taverns & increase inns.

Richard Lawrence of Yonge St. who had received a license to keep a Tavern for House, at his dwelling house & who had removed from thence to another Public house; applied for leave to keep a Tavern under the same license in the house to which he had removed. . 1828 - Photo of large wooden mill: Lot 1, Con. 2 East. Markham Township. Bayview Ave & Steeles Ave. Fish Mill, NE corner Steeles & Bayview in 1961. This grist & saw mill was built in 1830 by Benjamin Fish, next to the distillery that he owned (built 1828). Though the original mill was destroyed in a fire, Fish built a new one on the same site. Demolished in 1965, when the intersection of Bayview & Steeles was widened.
. The Town of Charlotteville:* When the war of 1812 broke out the court-house was used for barrack purposes, ... was christened" Fort Norfolk." The court house, jail, the fort & the tavern of Job Loder all stood on the elevation above the flat. A hotel was built under the hill & kept by a man named Hatch. In 1833, during the cholera scare*, a hospital was built at this place. It stood on the bank & was a barn-like structure & was used but little, if at all, for the purpose for which it was built. The old Town of Charlotteville reached the zenith of its glory during the war. In 1815 the District Courts were removed to Vittoria & the Town of Charlotteville relapsed into Turkey Point once more. No traces of its old-time importance remain, save a few surface irregularities indicating the spot occupied by the fort. The dreary waste at Turkey Point was, for 13 years, the judicial metropolis for all this vast region of country.

. 1801 Children's schoolhouse, Condition of Yonge Street:
Lot No. 25 west & east complied with, Lot 25 East Side of Yonge Street; nothing done to the street & a schoolhouse erected in the centre of the street. This is the end of the Township of York.

. On page 427 of Scadding's memoirs, he tells us that Elisha Pease taught in this early schoolhouse.

. DAUGHTER & WIFE of a TAVERN KEEPER:
Mary Willson Lawrence & her children, had much experience at Taverkeeping. Husband Richard Lawrence held a UC licensed tavern located on Yonge Street north. She & her friend, as noted below, Mary Thompson visited Miss Elizabeth Russel when Thompson was employed by the sister of THE most prominent & powerful man in Upper Canada. From extracted stories from Ely Playter's Journal we may see what life was like a woman tavenkeeper in early Upper Canada:
. 1806 Jan 11 - Thinking it was a tavern, Ely Playter & a companion mistakenly stopped & stayed over night at Mr. Miller's house. Implicit in the mistake at Millers & throughout his journal, is a parallel understanding that household life intersected with public life in taverns.

. 1802 May 2 & Sept 29 - Mary Thomson*, Playter's journal's Miss T - also lived at his house. She was the daughter of a substantial farm family from Scarborough Township. Her father, Archibald, was a master stonemason & a Justice of the peace from 1806. Nothing about her presentation in the journal suggests less than respectable young womanhood. It is difficult to account for her presence in the tavern rather than on her family's farm. [Scaboro Museum, 2016]. Certainly not a servant in the house, she socialized within the same circles as the tavern-keeper & came & went as she pleased.
Playter mentioned her almost exclusively in the parlour usually in the context of polite sociability, but once he noted, I seated myself by the Parlour fire & finished my letters to Mr & Mrs Rogers, it was one o'clock in the morning before I retired to bed. Miss T sat at her work till I had finished writing. This brief reference & others, imply Mary Thompson may have worked in the textile trade from Playter's tavern & continued so working after marrying John Scarlett of the Humber. Tavern-keepers placed tea tables in their parlours. Nor did anything about the emphatically public nature of their homes work to exclude the women of tavern-keeping households from local networks of female friendship & association:
The Tavernkeepers' daughters, Player saw Miss Beman, the Miss Jarvises, & Miss Robinson on their way home as they had been visiting & he gave my Sister's Compliments to her as they had requested in their letter" In their taverns these women crafted a female space for sociability, into which they also welcomed men.

Date & place of burial of Mary Willson Lawrence is unknown. Last known whereabouts of Mary Lawrence was noted in her daughter Mary Ann Lawrence's UC Marriage Bond of 10 August 1819, where permission to marry was obtained at Long Point in southern Ontario. Rebecca Lawrence says her father died when she was very young & she was reared by an older sister, implying perhaps that Mary Willson was dead between 1821 & 1831 when her husband died & thus making Rebecca about 16 years of age - not so 'very young'.

Richard Lawrence was an inn keeper in the Long Pointe to Harwich, Ontario, until his death about another 1 years later, about 1831.
