He, like some of his cousins, participated in the MacKenzie Rebellion, 1837-1838. He was arrested as a rebel sympathizer & spent several months in a Toronto prison, during which time the leaders, Lount & Matthews, suffered the death penalty.
Jesse was a farmer. After harvest was over, he would visit Boston, MA, then the musical center of the continent. All the best of the new music was introduced there. After each concert, he would return to his room & write down the theme or air to any he considered good. After the concerts, about 2 weeks, he would return home & write out parts for the different instruments of his band. In this way, Sharon Temple had all the latest new good music long before Boston had released it for publication.

    Notes:

    Biography
John Hugh Willson, born 10 July 1791, died 29 Dec. 1863. He purchased his farm, “Spruce Dale” on Lot 13 & 14, Conc. 2, in 1815 with money he & his brother Richard made during the War of 1812. It had 15 acres cleared & a small house & barn.
He often told the story that during the initial settlement of the village he had been forced to grind his flour by placing it in a hollow stump & pounding it with a stone attached to a sapling. Richard worked the farm alone the first year, as John was hired to help build a schooner for the Hon. Peter Robinson at the mouth of the Nottawasaga River.
In 1821 John married Rebecca Burr, daughter of Reuben & Elizabeth Cleaver Burr, born 3 Aug. 1802 in Catawissa, Pa., died 5 March 1874. They were Quakers, & Rebecca was disowned for her marriage to a non-Friend 13 Dec. 1821. Her family had immigrated to Whitchurch twp. in 1805 (Lot 85, conc. 1). After a short stay near Richmond Hill, the Burr family had moved to Lot 17, Conc. 2 of E.G. in 1816. Rebecca’s sister Jane was married to Jeremiah Graham, another member of the Children of Peace. John was a member of the Children of Peace for only a short time; Rebecca never joined.
John & Richard worked for 2 years providing fresh beef for the naval establishment at Penetanguishene, but in 1823 split up the farm they had worked together. Although John had originally settled his farm with his brother Richard’s help, they were on opposite sides in the Rebellion of 1837. Richard wrote “I was then a Lieutenant & my brother John, a captain in East Gwillimbury. When I went to my brother’s ( John), to ask him to turn out he was not at home, but at Sharon. His wife said “He would not & should not go.” I then asked her for his arms, for we were in great want of them. She said “I know nothing about them.” I then went into another room to look for his rifle, which I could not see, but I saw his sword hanging by the head of his bed. This I took down & as I did so his wife, who had followed, caught hold of the hilt & jerked it partly out. To save myself from being stabbed I was obliged to pull her close to me & at the same time towards the door. I then wished myself clear of both her & the sword, but I dared not let go of her & seized the hilt of the sword giving her a heavy push, & walked off with it. But instead of following me she ran into the house & called for the rifle, the children following her. It was ridiculous to see one of her Britannic Majesty’s officers, with a sword in his hand, running from a woman, but run I did, & in a different way to what she had expected. I ran around the house when she looked for me in front, & before she saw me I got some 25 rods away. She, however, leveled the rifle at me, but did not fire. She told me afterwards her reason for not firing was that, as I was some distance away & in motion, & she greatly excited, she might not kill me, etc. She, however, went immediately for her husband who in short time came to my house not well pleased. I then demanded of him, in Her Majesty’s name, to either turn out in defense of the government or lend me his sword. He choose the latter & I still have the sword, as I bought him a new one some time after.” John was elected a Township Commissioner, councillor, in 1836-38, & again in 1850. John & Rebecca are both buried in the Sharon Burial Ground.
Richard Titus Willson, born 5 April 1793, died 18 April 1878; married Aug. 1814, Eleanor Emes, daughter of Calvin & Martha Drury Emes of Georgina Township. For further details see the notes for his brother John above. Richard served under Captains Selby & Traviss, both of East Gwillimbury, in the War of 1812, for which he was later granted a pension. He became a Mason in 1814, & at the time of his death was said to be the oldest Mason in the Dominion. He served as a magistrate for a number of years & was twice elected reeve of Holland Landing. His lengthy reminiscences were republished by the Newmarket Historical Society as one of their Occasional Papers (No. 1). He was a member of the Children of Peace for only a short time.

. John Doan, (Mar 27 1838), The foregoing is a copy of a testimony written for the benefit of the congregation & not intended to go to public. But finding the the author has been accused (by individuals unknown to us) of being of a seductious character & of purchasing & writing doctrines of a rebellious nature & that he was a principal instigator of the revolt. He (David Willson) both in church & state discipleship a stone advocate for king & constitution, I have never known him to vary from it at no time. … They say that many who were as deeply implicated in the rebellion as themselves, would make no confession & was set at liberty, while they had to endure a long confinement in prison & 2 of the members are yet confined & for what cause I now not, Hugh Willson & Jesse Doan perhaps were as small dealer in politics as any in the place. They were managing their own proper business, until they were taken in the troop with the rest. [Multiple religious quotes.]

The above testimony & many others were written by David Wilson to his children in prisons, which may not be unsatisfactory to some of ourselves informed rulers. The tree is known by its fruit, or a many is known by his work. I could produce many testimony from his works of the like of these, in various parts of his life & I know not that he has changed his sentiments at any time.

Petition of John Willson, East Gwillimbury, yeoman. Petitioner has been upwards of 16 months [Nov 1803] in the Province, subscribed the Oath of Allegiances; sufficient ability to cultivate land & is desirous to occupy & improve a vacant lot of Crown land:
Signed, John Wilson, York, 12 Mar, 1805.
. Receipt #44, John Wilson has paid in this office £5 19s, 4p. for a Patent Grant of 200 Acres, also £1 6s for surveying fees there on. Peter Russell, Survey General.
. Yonge Street, 7 days 3rd month 1805. To the governor Council to look upon this long man to be a friendly man, a good farmer, very honest worth $300 & wishes to settle with Friends in the corner of Uxbridge, His name is John Wilson, late of from New York Sate, Signed, Timothy Rogers, His mother is a widow & moved in with him.

Hugh L. Willson was born in County Down while the family had been living in Carrickfergus County Antrim leads me to think that John’s wife was living on her brother in law’s farm at the time of Hugh L Willson’s birth.

He met & married Catherine in New York & they had a rented farm 12 miles east of Poughkeepsie near the Connecticut border.
Carolyn Mann found in ancient documents from Poughkeepsie that John had little sympathy for the “rebels”, & that before & after the actual declaration of war, he had been arrested several times, bound over to keep the peace, fined & even served a term of imprisonment for defending sometimes with his fist!

Hugh was the son of John's first wife who died shortly after his birth. Sometime between 1768 & 1775 his father emigrated to America leaving Hugh in the care of his Uncle Hugh Willson until the entire family left for America. On the death of his father John, Hugh took over the rented family farm near Poughkeepsie, New York. In 1790 he married Mary Titus, eldest daughter of Austin Titus, a Quaker minister & blacksmith, & Waite Giddley, a "Dutch" woman. In 1798 Hugh moved to New York City where purchased a share in the sloop, "The Farmer", a trade ship which ran between New York & the West Indies. In the Spring of 1800, he sold his share in The Farmer & moved to upper Canada.

    Obituary:
. 1857 Jun 3, Wednesday Died at Sharon, East Gwilimbury, Mary, relic to the late Mr. Hugh Willson, aged 89 years, less 2 days.
The subject of this Obituary was born in Duchess County, NY & immigrated to this country soon after the American Revolution. Her early education & ideas of mind was received amongst the religious under Friends, to which communion her parents belonged & many branches of her Fathers’s family have been & are conspicuous members. She maintained through all the vicissitudes of her long life, an unblemished reputation - remarkable for love, of quietude & the society of the good. Towards the close her mind seems to revisit the scenes of the childhood & youth & to mingle with the Society of her Father’s house, where a recollection of early antidotes & familiar of early principles seemed to comfort her; & is several that from this stand point she took her view of her Heavenly home. The Lord granted me the privilege to visiting her several times previous to her death - to speak of Jesus - to read to her the previous promises & to pray of her. With others we stood at her bedside & with hearts lifted to the Father, of spirits, in humbleness begged that he would receive the dear depart soul, which seemed while stretching its opinion of light for its wondrous flight, to have left on the fair features an indication of salvation by shedding over them a smile of indescribable sweetness.
She lived to see the 4th generation of her offspring & has left behind her now living nearly all in this section of county, 16 children, including sons-in-law & daughters-in-law; 92 grandchildren, 90 great grandchildren & one great-great grand child. Her children & grandchildren are included the usual & respectable class of community. HHW.
