2. | Mathew SMITH, Sr. was born in in Welland, Lincoln Co., Ontario. Notes: Mathew Smith was well & favorably known as a progressive farmer & an extensive breeder of shorthorn cattle. Mathew Smith had the proud distinction of owning the first buggy in the township and though at the present day it souls be considered rather too old fashion for any one to ride in, it caused quite a sensation & was nearly the cause of getting Mr. Smith into trouble. The first time he rode in state to church, the worshippers were slow in coming in, the cause being attributed to the time occupied in examining and admiring the new buggy, & it was considered by the more conservative people that Mr. Smith, who was considered a "bright and shining light" in the community, was showing an example of extravagance to his neighbors by such an innovation and insisted that Mr. Smith should be disciplined for his want of consideration. ...the subject was dropped.
