. Obituary: Memorial Service Set Friday For Lee Burrows.

Memorial services for Lee Burrows, former Laramie resident, will be held in Casper at the Presbyterian Church Friday, June 30, at 2 p.m.

Mr. Burrows was drowned June 12 when his boat capsized during a fishing trip at Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone Park. His body has not been recovered.

Born in Laramie, the 31-year-old man had lived here until about seven years ago. He attended Laramie schools & was a graduate of the University of Wyoming. He was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation as an electrical engineer formerly at Cody & for the past several years at Casper. He served in the Navy during World War II & in the Korean War. He was a member of the Elks Lodge & the American Legion.

Surviving Mr. Burrows is his wife, Patricia; 2 children, Katherine Ellen, 7, & Bruce, 3, & his mother, Mrs. Lois Burrows now of Casper.

. 1935 Jun 20 - Kelly. Annual school meeting was held at Kelly Monday afternoon. Attendance was small owing to rush of work on ranches. Mr Mrs Redmond & granddaughter, Patricia McCain, were down from the Red Rock Ranch, Tuesday.

. 1940 Aug 15, Mrs WP Redmond & granddaughter, Patricia McCain, drove to Green River , Wednesday to take Jill to entrain for her home in Long Breach, California. Miss Lucas & Patricia have been spending the summer here with Mrs Redmond.

Patricia McCain Burrows, 73, of Bozeman, Mont., died Aug. 1 in Plantation, Fla.
She was born on Sept. 14, 1926, in San Diego, Calif., & had lived in California, Arizona & Wyoming.
She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1948 from the University of Wyoming. She married Lee Burrows at Moose in Grand Teton National Park on Sept. 8, 1948, & lived in Casper & later Cody until Mr. Burrow's death in 1958. Mrs. Burrows worked for the Gallatin County Credit Bureau in Bozeman until her retirement in 1992.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Schofield of Plantation; a son, Bruce Burrows of Cheyenne; & 6 grandchildren.
Mrs. Burrows is preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Joan McCain Nelson; & a granddaughter.
Her family & friends will gather in Bozeman Aug. 11. Interment will be at Aspen Hill Cemetery in Jackson.

Patricia McCain Burrows, 73, died Aug. 1, 2000, at her daughter's home in Plantation, Fla., after suffering from lung cancer for the previous 9 months.

. Mrs. Burrows was born Sept. 14, 1926, in San Diego, Calif., to Byron & Gertrude Redmond McCain. During her childhood years, her father worked as a construction engineer, & as a result, her family lived in numerous locations in California & Arizona. She spent many summers in Jackson Hole, Wyo., with her grandparents & other relatives who had been pioneers in the area.
Mrs. Burrows was graduated from South Pasadena, Calif., High School in 1944. She subsequently attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif., & Occidental College in Los Angeles before transferring to the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from UW in 1948.
While at UW, she met Laramie native Lee Burrows. They were married at Moose, Wyo., on Sept. 8, 1948. To this union were born a daughter, (Kathleen) Ellen, & a son, Bruce. Mrs. Burrows was widowed in 1958. Prior to Mr. Burrows' death, the family lived in Casper & Cody, Wyo.

. 1959, Mrs. Burrows moved to Bozeman to be near her grandmother, Ida Simpson Redmond, & her maternal aunt, Dorothy Redmond Hubbard, & soon began working for the Gallatin County Credit Bureau. Except for a brief period of employment at the Montana State University Library, Mrs. Burrows remained with the credit bureau until her retirement in 1992, serving as office manager for several years. In subsequent years, she continued to work part-time, most recently at Insty Prints in University Square shopping center.

Mrs. Burrows was an avid reader with a particular interest in history. She was very skilled as a genealogist & compiled a great deal of information about her family tree. She volunteered regularly at the Family History Center at the LDS church, & she was a member of Gallatin County Historical Center & the Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society. Mrs. Burrows also enjoyed domestic & international travel, & she participated in numerous Elderhostel programs.

Mrs. Burrows was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Joan McCain Nelson; & her granddaughter, Emily Schofield.

Her family & friends will gather to remember her & celebrate her life at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Bozeman Holiday Inn. Her ashes will be interred at Aspen Hill Cemetery in Jackson, Wyo.

Contributions in her memory should be directed to the LDS Family History Center, 1822 W. Lincoln, Bozeman.

Mrs. Burrows' family is grateful for the many expressions of concern & for the assistance she received from her many friends in Bozeman during her final illness. - - -

. 1915 Aug 19, Messes Helen Simpson, Pearl Williams & Gertude Redmond of Jackson, are with Mr Simpson to the Jim Williams ranch, Sunday, where Mr Simpson is stopping for a short time with his tourist party. The girls returned to Jackson Tuesday.
. 1918 Jun 27 - Mrs. W P Redmond & Miss Gerturde came down from Crystal Creek last Friday afternoon, returning Sunday. Shortly after they crossed it, the Turpin bridge of Gros Centre washed out & they were compelled to return by the high water trail. The washout rather isolates the Redmonds who had expected to age frequent trips to Jackson during the summer in their car.
- Miss Gertrude Redmond visited with Miss Pearl Williams at the Ji Williams ranch on Aspen Ridge the forepart of last week.

. 1924 Sep 18 - Poplar Local Couple Have Pretty Ranch Home Wedding
At high noon, Sunday Sept 14 there occurred the marriage of Miss Gertrude M Redmond of Kelly to Byron McCain of this city, Rev. Beaty officiating. Ceremony took place at the Red Rock ranch, the home of the bride's parents, MR MRs W P Redmond.
Only the immediate families were present, Mr. Redmond gave the bride away, Miss Ella McCain was bridesmaid & Allen Stud was best man. The ranch house was very prettily decorated with autumn leaves & flowers. After the wedding a dinner were served to the guest. Both birds & gloom are well & favorably known throughout Jackson's Hole, Bryron having lived her the past 6 years & his bride even longer. The families from which these 2 young people spring are among the best in this section of the state.

. 1938 Jul 14 - Mrs WP Redmond & her dau. Mrs BH McCain, with Mrs. Crandall, sister of Mrs. Redmond, have gone to Montana for a short visit. Mrs. McCains 2 young daughters, Patricia & Joanne, accompanied them.

. 1941 Jul 3 - Mrs Wm P Redmond returned last Sunday from Los Angles, Calif. where she made a brief visit with her drug. Mrs BH Cain & family. Her granddaughter, Patricia McCain, came home with her to spend the summer at the Red Rock ranch.
Mr & Mrs Fernie Hubbard & dau. Nancy left last Saturday for Gandy, Colorado, where Mr. Hubbard attended the Hereford cattle sale held there. They returned home Wednesday.

. 1961 Aug 10 - Former resident death. Services were held Monday at St. John's Episcopal church for Res. Gerturde Kavanagh, onetime resent of Jackson Hole. She was the daughter of the late Wm. & Ida Redmond & was born on the ranch now known as the Hanson place. She passed away at Lincoln, Nebraska, after a long illness.
Surving are husband, Lawrence Kavanagh,, a brother Lawrence Redmond & his wife, a sister Dorothy Hubbard & husband Ferne;
2 daughters: Mrs Joan Nelson & Mrs LeeBurrows & 3 grandchildren.
Burial in the family plot in Jackson Hillside Cemetery, Pall bearers were Merritt & Howard Ferrin, Mann McCain, Jim Merrill, Harry Brown & Harry Barker Jr.

. William Preston Redmond was born in 1873 in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of William Redmond, Jr. & Mary Lawrence Griffin Redmond.
His only sibling, Julia Lawrence Redmond, died at the age of 6 & when his mother died in 1887, he was placed in a boarding school, the Lawrenceville Academy.
His desire was to go west, however, so at the age of 18 he obtained a job as a helper with the U.S. Geological Survey & went to Montana. In May 1893, he purchased supplies in Bozeman, MT & traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, filing for a homestead patent after May 1894 when he reached the required age of 21.

On December 1, 1897, he married Ida Byrd Simpson, the "vivacious" daughter of John Porter & Margaret Susan Sullivan Simpson. Together, they developed his homestead as the Spring Gulch Ranch. In 1916, he purchased the Red Rock Ranch from his brother-in-law, who had homesteaded it & ran it as a dude ranch until 1929. He & Ida continued to manage it for a few years for the new owner, after which they moved to the Aspen Ranch in Kelly, WY, which is now a part of Teton National Park. He was prominent in the cattle business & became the first Commissioner & Chairman of the Board of Teton County.

Until he & Ida had their family, he was the only living descendant (great grandson) of Captain James Lawrence, who, with his dying words during the War of 1812 battle between his ship the 'Chesapeake' & the English ship 'Shannon', gave the Navy its motto, 'Don't Give Up the Ship'. 

. 1919 Apr 11, Friday. Steel Shoes for Elk, Jackson's Hole Stockman Has New Theory for Preservation: W. P. Redmond, a prominent stockman of the Jackson's hole country, has advanced a new theory regarding the preservation of the herds of elk. Calling attention to the conditions in the valley in the spring to the year when the melting show covers the grown with slush & water, Mr. Redmond argues that, living under these conditions, the elks' feet become tender, making it almost impossible from them to leave the valley to seek new feed.
As a remedy for this, he suggests that the government provide the elk with good steel shoes, erecting a corral & well equipped shop on the federal ranch east of Jackson.

. 1938 Jun 24 - Funeral Services for W P Redmond Friday Afternoon, on Jun 24, well known Jackson Hole pioneer who passed away suddenly early morning following an operation Holy Cross hospital, Salt Lake city. Services will be held at St. John's Episcopal church.
WPR was born at Newport, May 19 1873, After his graduation fro Lawrenceville Academy, NY, he went to Montana & the Yellowstone National Park geological survey, which which he was connected for several years.
. 1892 Jackson Hole, Wyoming where he took up a ranch on the Buffalo Fork of Snake River. Later he was one of the first settlers in Spring Gulch, northwest of Jackson town, Here he was engaged in the cattle business.
. purchased Red Rock Ranch on Crystal Creek, which he operated in connection with cattle holdings, as a Dude Ranch.
. Purchased a large ranch in the Bid Hole Basin, near Wisdom, Montana & moved his cattle to that point. This ranch is being operated by his only son Lawrence.
. His present ranch holdings in Jackson Hole are on Ditch Reek, near Kelly Wyoming.
His industry & good management of his properties always made his operations successful. Likewise he contributed to the general public welfare.
. His only official capacity was first commissioner & chairman of board of Benton Co., Wyo. Mr. Rdemond was a 'thoro going' rancher, but always abreast of the latest developments in the industry. He was a believer in modern methods; progressive & enterprising character.

. 1899 Dec 1 he was united in marriage with Ida B Simpson, daughter of Margaret L & John P Simpson, pioneers of the valley & l owners of a large part of Jackson.
. Their 3 children: LARRY Lawrence, of Wisdom, Montana,
Gertrude M Caine, Yosemite Park,California, &
Dorothy Hubbard, resides on Red Rock Ranch Wyo., All during with 4 grandchildren.
. Mr Redmond was a direct descendant, great grandchild of Capt. Lawrence, US Naval hero. Being a perfect gentleman, liberal in his thought & always interested in the development of Jackson Hole.

Byrd is the daughter of Margaret Susan Sullivan & John Port Simpson of Pennsylvania, however, on the Census 1930 Ida states her father is from Illinois and her mother from Virginia.

. 1916 Mar 9 - WP Redmond, who with his family, has spend the past few months in California visiting his wife's parents Mr Mrs Simpson, reports the latter as both bing ver well. He states that Mr Simpson was quite sick all thought the month of January but is recovered. Mr Simpson, he says is already anticipating his annual trip into the Hole this summer. Well, his visits are always might welcome to the people here, with whom he i a familiar figure.

. 1943 Jul 1 - Mrs WP Redmond drove to Victor, Tuesday, to meet her granddaughters, Patricia & JoAnne McCain, daus. of Mrs Mrs BH McCain of Pasadena, Calfifornia. The girls will spend the summer with Mrs. Redmond at her ranch home near Kelly.

. 1943 Jul 15 - Mrs. Fernie Hubbard took several girls camping on the Gros Centre Wednesday. Those enjoying the outing were Gloria Hubbard, Jill Lucas & Patricia & Joan McCain.

. 1943 Jul 22 - Mrs WP Redmond entrained at dinner Tues. evening. Guests were her granddaughters, Patricia & JoAnn McCain & Mrs Anne Kent & her niece , Billie Bridge.
