8. | James Rodger GREIG was born on 21 May 1870 in Montreal (son of William GREIG and Elizabeth McGowan RODGER); died in Jan 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; was buried on 31 Jan 1941 in Arlington, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, USA. Notes:
Resided in Cardinal, Ontario when he was married. Returned to Montreal in April 1898.
His Marriage Certificate, abstracted by Janet Gerla April 24, 2018 in an email to John Cowan, says James was a bookkeeper when he was married. Witnesses to marriage in Carleton Place were William Greig (his father) and Alex R Greig (his brother). Both JAmes and Sarah are listed as Presbyterian. Married by Rev A A Scott.
Janet Gerla reports (April 11 2018 email to John Cowan) that he "lived in Philadelphia in the twenties and thirties and owned an antiques/resale shop there. He had red hair."
Living in Philadelphia in 1922 (See William Greig Obit in Library/William Greig/Item 7)
See his grandson's recollections of him during The Depression in Library/William Greig/Item 6
Died at work (241 S 13th St) at 10AM, while living at 7006 Sellers Ave, Bywood, Upper Darby - an inner suburb of Philadelphia 6.6 miles from his work location (See Library/William Greig/Item 8). Google Street view shows (in 2018) a house that was probably standing in 1941 - detached home in what looks to be a quiet, tree lined area.
Worked up to the time of his death after 32 years as an antique dealer (Library/William Greig/Item 8). This suggests that he was in Philadelphia as early as 1909, and might have been the reason his younger brother Wickliffe worked and lived in Philadelphia 1911-13.
James married Sarah Hall GREY on 24 Jun 1896 in Carleton Place, Ontario. Sarah (daughter of William B GREY and Jane) was born about 1870 in Carleton Place, Ontario. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
