Charles was born on Monday February 19 1917

Charles Goodmurphy joined the Canadian Army in 1940 (after his father Joel died) then he went overseas in July 1940, he came back in April 1941 to Kingston Military Hospital.

He was in the hospital for a few days for a checkover then released.

He stayed on in Kingston at the Fort Frontenac barracks. Everette Goodmurphy, his older brother, was working as a cook at Fort Frontenac, and at that time was seeing Mary McVicker from Deseronto.

Everette and Charles went to Deseronto in April 1941 and Charles met Catherine (Betty) McVicker. They dated for three months or so, then they were married on August 6, 1941.

Charles and Betty stayed in Deseronto for awhile, then they lived in Kingston for awhile. They went back to Deseronto, and were living there when their first child, Teresa, was born on Septmeber 5, 1942.

In late 1942 they moved to Bloomfield, then in 1943 they moved to Wellington.

At that time, Richard & Anastacia McVicker and Dennis Callaghan (Anastacia's father) moved to Wellington also.

In 1944, Charles and Betty lived at Charlie Greer's tenant house on Consecon Street (west side, just before the Cemetery, across from Cecil Fritz).

In 1945 they moved out to the Swamp College Road to live with Ralph Goodmurphy (Charles's younger brother) to help work the Goodmurphy farm owned by Jennie Goodmurphy Parker (Gilbert's daughter).

In 1946 they moved to the Lakeshore, west of Wellington, to a house owned by Lewis Wight.

In 1948 they moved to a house near the site of the Canadian Cannery # 45 - behind the present-day site of the Legion Manor. The Cannery was torn down many many years ago. They had moved to this site after Elizabeth was born in May 1948.

In 1949 they moved to the corner of the Town Line Road & the Gore Road, the current site of Barry McFaul's house (on the NE corner).

In the fall of 1949 they moved to Platt's (east end of Wellington) near what used to be Ogilvy's Milk Plant during the 1950's.

In 1950, Charles was admitted to Hotel Dieu Hospital in Kingston with stomach ulcer troubles and underwent stomach surgery.

Later in 1950, Charles & Betty and their first four children, moved to Niles Corners to a little red brick insul house on the corner, next to Bill & Gerty Dainard.

In 1952, Charles was admitted to Hotel Dieu Hospital with a ruptured appendix.

In August 1952, Charles began employment at Mountain View Airport as a Commissionaire.

In the spring of 1961 the family moved to the junction of the Danforth Road and Swamp College Road. The immediate neighbours were Norman & Ethel Allison, to the west, and Jim & Margaret Denard, to the east. Just past the Denard's on the south side of the road, were Allan & Barbara Pettingill.

In 1985, Charles & Betty sold this house and moved into the newly constructed Legion Manor, situated behind the Wellington Arena.

In 1989, Charles and Betty moved from the Legion Manor to 183 Niles Street (just east of the Arena, which is also on Niles Street).

In late 1996, Charles health worsened due to the progression of Parkinson's Disease. Charles was placed into the Picton Manor in January 1997.

In January 1998 his health rapidly declined, and he passed away on January 20, 1998.

  1. 4.  JOEL GOODMURPHY was born on 15 Oct 1871 in Hallowell Twp, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada (son of SOLOMON LAWRENCE GOODMURPHY and Lydia Jane Maria HUTCHINSON); died on 13 Jan 1940 in Wellington, Hillier Twp, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada.

    Notes:

The Birth Records for Prince Edward County show that Joel was born on October 15, 1871 not October 14, 1872. Also the Birth Notice states that the parents were living on a farm in Sophiasburg twp.
According to Charles Goodmurphy, his father Joel was born in a little red house situated at the NW corner of the Gilead and Town Line Roads. The house sat on a 30 acre parcel of land.
The little red house was eventually moved to the west side of the TownLine Road, and was used for a honey house (beekeeping). The little red house still stands today (January 1996).
Joel and Lillie Belle were probably married on Sept 16,1892.
It is believed that Joel and Lillie Belle lived in the little red house for some years and were there in 1912 when Lillie Belle passed away at the age of 35.

Joel remarried to Charlotte (Lottie) Vancleaf on May 22, 1915 in Picton, Ontario.

Joel and wives Lillie Belle and Lottie are buried in the Wellington Village Cemetery.

Over the years, Joel and Lottie moved about several times.

In 1925, they moved to Buck Trumpours place (east of Niles Corners), then back to the Town Line.
In 1926, they moved to the Gore Road, then in 1930 they moved back to the Town Line, south of where Clifford and Gladys McFaul had their Pea Viner Processing Station.
The Gerty Winters house at this site was moved in later years to Wellington near where the Texaco Service Station was located.
From 1932 to 1940, Joel and Lottie lived on the Swamp College Road on the Hutchinson Family property (where the Zachariah family lived in the 1960's).

Joel died in 1940 and Lottie moved to Wellington, first to an apartment over top of the Bank of Nova Scotia, then across from Bill Davern's store, then to the Town Line Road - just south of St. Francis of Rome Roman Catholic Church (to the Mickey Donovan house). She lived there until she died in 1954.

  1. 8.  SOLOMON LAWRENCE GOODMURPHY was born in 1836 in Belleville, Thurlow Township, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada (son of LAWRENCE GOODMURPHY and Lydia GARRATT); died on 17 Mar 1895 in Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada.

    Notes:

Solomon was born in Belleville, Ontario.

Lydia Hutchinson was born in Huntingdon Twp, her parents were Jonathan and Elizabeth.
They were of English origin and were Quakers by religion. By 1860, the Hutchinson family were living in Hillier Twp.

Solomon and Lydia were married on October 8, 1860 in Prince Edward County (probably Hillier Township) and accepted the Quaker religion.

    PROPERTY - HALLOWELL
Solomon purchased the East Half of the North Half of Lot 11 - 3rd Concession - Hallowell Twp from his father Lawrence on April 22, 1867.

On October 28, 1868, Solomon sold 20 acres (East Half) to Richard Saylor.
The West Half was given by Agreement of Mortgage to Rensaler Cooper, on March 20, 1869. Rensaler married Eliza Goodmurphy, youngest sister of Solomon.

    PROPERTY - HILLIER
Solomon acquired 70 acres of Lot 1, Conc. 1, Hillier Twp on November 5, 1872 from Silas Reynolds & Charlotte Blakely.
The property was on the westside of the Town Line Road, and ran from just south of Gilead Rd, and north towards the Swamp College Road.

It is presumed that Solomon & Lydia were living down in Hallowell Twp from 1860 to 1872.
The Census records seem to indicate that Solomon and Lydia were still living at Lot 11 in Hallowell Twp in 1881, but my father is under the impression that his father Joel was born in a little red house situated on 30 acres at the northeast corner of Gilead and Town Line Roads. This requires further research.

The farm was passed onto Lydia on July 11, 1891 before Solomon died and in August 1895 she passed it on to her sons Gilbert and Wallace.
Wallace sold out his interest to Gilbert in 1910 and Gilbert passed the property to his daughter Bernice in March 15, 1932.
Bernice sold the farm to Clifford McFaul on October 17, 1961, after it had been held by the Goodmurphy family for 89 years.

From the Picton Gazette, December 1961:
    Farm Changes Ownership

Mr. Clifford McFaul purchased the farm on the Town Line, at the Gilead Road turn this fall from Mrs. Percy Cleave. Farms change hands every day, but not this particular one.
In 1872, Mrs. Cleave`s grandfather, Mr. Solomon Goodmurphy, purchased this farm from Silas Reynolds, a grandson of "old Smoke" Daniel Reynolds. Mr. Solomon Goodmurphy
lived on the farm until he passed away in March 1895, at the age of 88.
His sons, Gilbert Lawrence and Wallace E., with their families, lived together on the farm until 1903. Wallace moved to a farm on the Swamp College Road but the brothers
continued to work together as partners until 1910. Gilbert bought Wallace's farm and worked alone. Mrs. Gilbert Goodmurphy passed away in 1919, Gilbert passed away in 1932.
At that time, the farm was left to their daughter, Bernice. Mrs. Cleave has owned it until this fall 1961, after 89 years being in the Goodmurphy name. Mr. and Mrs. Cleave are living on
    Wharf Street, Wellington.

Note: Solomon was born in 1836, so he was only 59 when he died. Lawrence, his father, was 86 when he died in 1891, I believe they got their names and dates mixed up.

Solomon passed away in Kingston according to his Will and left his estate to his wife Lydia.
Solomon and Lydia are buried in the Hicksite Cemetery in West Bloomfield. Solomon's will # 165.5 prepared on July 12, 1883, left everything to his wife, Lydia Maria. The executors were Lydia and Solomon's friend, John C. Garratt.

    Notes:

The 1881 Census lists Daniel as an Irish Sailor whose parents were born in Ireland, with no relation to the Daniel McVicker family (Mary McVicker's parents).
The family always referred to Daniel as "The Captain". Family tradition says that Captain Dan McVicker was a sea captain who sailed every sea. He was a lake captain who sailed the Great Lakes for years. He drowned on "The Ducks" shoals off Kingston, Ontario, as he was bringing in his ship for winter berth, about October 28, 1917.
Daniel and Mary were married on Aug 09,1872. The witnesses were James Nolan and Lizzie O'Neil.
The 1881 Census has Captain Dan and Mary, and the first four children living in the Millpoint (renamed to Deseronto) area of Tyendinaga Township, probably near where Mary's parents were living at the time.
The 1891 Census has them listed under Deseronto Village.
By 1891, the oldest child (Edward) is employed as a Sawmill labourer, and it is understood that he died while working in the woods in Central Hastings County.
The Death notice indicates that he died of appendicitis. His uncles, Patrick and James McVicker, went in with a team of horses, and brought his body out. Edward was buried in Marysville.
The youngest child, William or Willie, died at seven years of age.

The 1901 Census has Daniel emigrating into Canada in 1867 - not sure if he came by himself - he would have been 22 years of age.

Daniel married Mary MCVICKER on 9 Aug 1872 in Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada. Mary (daughter of Daniel MCVICKER and Margaret O'CONNOR) was born on 8 Nov 1849 in Deseronto, Tyendinaga Twp, Hastings County, Ontario,Canada; died on 25 Nov 1921 in Deseronto, Tyendinaga Twp, Hastings County, Ontario,Canada. Notes:

Marriage Notice has Denis Ryan's name as "Lewis".

On his father's death in 1884 Denis was deeded the farm at Con 5 Lot 36, but did not remain there long.
