Ordained an elder in St Andrew's Presbyterian Chruch by Rev John Laing in 1870.

He handed over the business to his sons in 1885 and he then devoted his time to insurance and accounting. William was a lifelong Reformer and always took a deep interest in public affairs. He was a Presbyterian and was, for many years, an elder in Knox Church.[2] William is interred in the Avondale Cemetery, Stratford, Ontario, Section L, Lot 045, Sublot 1.

1861 census shows his household including a 21 year old person born in Scotland with the name Jno McLeod. (See Library/Misc Stuff/Item 28 P 1) This might be a transcription error meaning John, who was Jane's brother.

Jane (daughter of Reverend Donald MCLEOD and Elizabeth COCHRAN) was born on 18 Feb 1833 in Gouroch, Scotland; died on 13 Apr 1905 in Stratford, Ontario; was buried on 15 Apr 1905 in Avondale Cemetery, Stratford, Ontario.
