  1. 1.  William James BLACK was born on 8 Jan 1879 in Garafraxa West Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario (son of David BLACK and Margaret MARY SPEARS); died on 15 Oct 1964 in Amaranth Twp., Dufferin Co., Ontario.

    Notes:

    John is the son of David Black & Margaret Spiers.

    On a sunny day in March when the family arrived on 10th line, Amaranth, adults were setting up stoves & having in furniture, so William curled up under a blanket & went to sleep, but for some reasons the teamed across the small clearing around the house & William was rudely awakened by the bumps as the slight hit the stumps. Nothing disastrous, but he always remembered the rough ride. so the farm was cleared, not leaving a standing tree. The only protection was a large orchard, surrounded by hard maples & spruce trees.

    William married Kate McFadzean of Waldemar, a graduate of the first Class of nurses from Dr. Abraham Groves' Hospital in Fergus, in 1905. They were married Feb 23, 1909
    There were 3 children: Jena, Bessie & Jean , a public school teach, married Wilbert Ferried in 1933 & lived on E Half Lot 26, Con 4, W. Gara, where he died in 1905.

    In Oct 29, 1955 she married Tom Hutchinson & they lived on his farm in the Simpson's Corners area, W Half Lot 4, Con 8, 7th line, now owned by Brian & Donna Bessey. They retired to Fergus in 1974. J B. Oct 1, 1910.
    Bessie Black born July 28, 1912, married Charles Buckingham, of Toronto where they lived. Charlie died July 1976 & Bessie lived in an apartment in Willowdale [North Toronto]. She died Mar 19, 1980. Buried Mt. Pleasant, Toronto.

    Lloyd Black, born Mar. 25, 1917, married Kay Teeter, June 9, 1945. He words at Malton [Mississauga], but lived in Orangeville at 99 Townline, west of Orangeville station, at south corner of town. Lloyd died March 13, 1985, Forest Lawn Cemetery.

  1. 2.  David BLACK was born in 1838 in Garafraxa West Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario; died on 3 Jun 1917 in Dufferin County, Ontario; was buried in Grand Valley, Dufferin Co., Ontario.

    Notes:

    David is the son of Elizabeth & John Black.

    Mrs. Janet Black died 29 Nov 1871 & was buried on her old home far in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Fergus. David Black, a farmer was left alone with 3 little girls.
    About that time Elias Felker died. David got Mrs. Felker (nee Spiers) to keep house for him, & because he felt the children were being poorly cared for, he married her.

    David Black built the stone foundation for the barn & also being a framer, he erected a bank barn. Timbers from the farm were used but it is doubtful they were able to find sufficient stones.

    David married Margaret MARY SPEARS on 18 Oct 1872 in Garafraxa West Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario. Margaret was born on 20 Feb 1835 in Lucknow, Bruce Co., Ontario; died on 9 Feb 1908 in Amaranth Twp., Dufferin Co., Ontario; was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]


  2. 3.  Margaret MARY SPEARS was born on 20 Feb 1835 in Lucknow, Bruce Co., Ontario; died on 9 Feb 1908 in Amaranth Twp., Dufferin Co., Ontario; was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

    Notes:

    Margaret's made name was Spears. She came from Lucknow, to which area her parents had travelled by wagon, across country from Bond Head. She was a niece of Mrs. Bosomworth of Elora (who trained the girls as dressmakers.
    Great-grandmother Spears may have been a Sharp. Because of this relationship, Margaret Spears came to Elora to learn dress making from a Miss or Mrs. Bosomwith. Wm. Spears was her brother.

    From this 2nd marriage for both Mr & Mrs. David Black, 4 more children were born: David Henry, Twins John & Nancy & William James Black.
