Felker undertook to superintend a street job which Cotter resented as an unwarrantable interface & acting in his capacity of marshal arrested the president. Felker ignored the arrest & is going on with the work.

Wm. Henry, the Portsmouthh man who was robbed of $1,000 at his home, 1200 Marsac St. early yesterday morning by an unknown burglar called at police headquarters & preferred a complainant against Levi G Felker, charging him with the theft. What evidence the police dept. has, in any, is being kept a secret. It is stated that Mr. Felker's house was thoroughly searched yesterday afternoon without discovering the slightest trace of the missing gold, silver & paper money which Mr. Henry claims he so carefully laid away in the little drawers in his room.
The Sunday Bay City Times is informed that Mr. Felker has been a resident of this country for more than a quarter of a century & has always been an honest, hard working & industrious man, having the respect of all who knew him. While living in Essexville he was twice elected president of the village.
Mrs. Felker & daughter called at the police station yesterday afternoon with John E Kinnane, who has been retained to conduct the defense. ... The defendant was arraigned, entered a plea of not guilty, & was held in $2,000 bail for his appearance Sep 1 at 1 o'clock. Mr Felker then departed with his wife & daughter for home.
"Why didn't you keep your money in the bank?" asked the Sunday Times of Mr. Henry.
"Will, I will tell you. A few years ago when the banks all over the country were failing, the banks of this city united in an agreement making it impossible for depositors to get their money without giving them notice a certain time in advance. I had about 1 $1,000 in 3 certificates of deposit, intent to use them from time to time as I wanted the money. When I presented one of the certificates, I could not get the money & it bothered me a good deal, & since that time I have been keeping my own money. I last saw the money on Thursday. I had a little money came in & I put it with the rent. What beats me is the fact that the burglar overlooked all of my mortgages, notes & other valuables while he took pains to take Mr. Felker's private papers & spread them out on the kitchen table."

. 1898, Sep 19, Mon. L G FELKER IS FREE. Was Discharged This Afternoon - Evidence Not Considered Sufficient to Hold Him for Trial
The examination of Levi G Felker, was was charged by Wm. henry with the theft of $1,000 from his room, came to a sudden end in the police court this afternoon at 3:30 o"clock. After a conference between Prosecutor Gilbert & Police Justice Kelly, it was decided to discharge the defendant. The police justice said that the evidence thus far taken was not, in his judgment, sufficient on which to hold the defendant to the circuit court for trail. He thereupon dismissed the charged & the defendant walked froth from the court a free man. This will be especially pleasing now to Mr. Felker's friends who have known him for many years as an honest & upright citizen.

The political cauldron in the village of Essexville is boiling over. The campaign which has been going on for the past few weeks has been the warmest in the history o the village. Meetings have been held on numerous occasions & the candidates suggested for several offices are too numerous to mention. Conversations with a number of prominent residents of the village show that the American protection ass, or anti-catholic movement, is the chief issue in the campaign. Election will take place on Mon. Mar. 14th.
Retiring village officers are: Levi G Felker, president, Wm. Felker clerk.

. Fred. moved to nearby Mount Albion on land in Saltfleet Township near the brow of the Niagara Escarpment. 7 miles from Hamilton, Saltfleet Twp. Nearby a saw mill was constructed, although it is not known exactly who built the mill. The earliest known owner of the mill is John Secord, who purchased it around 1812. Gradually, a small settlement began to form. It was originally named Albion Mills. The grist mill built alongside nearby Albion Falls, as well as Albion Mills' location at the head of the Red Hill Valley & along a well-travelled road were catalysts for growth in the small village. The influx of settlers to the area introduced services & establishments, including blacksmith shops, taverns & a general store. Albion Mills later gained its own stop on the horseback mail delivery route. Throughout the remainder of the 19th century, Albion Mills served as a local hub of commerce & services for the rural surrounding countryside. In 1880, the name of the village was changed to Mount Albion & the main road, up until then a muddy trail, was reconstructed with stone.

Frederick Felker (1794 - 1880) settled at Mount Albion /Stoney Creek, & purchased land just east of the hamlet. He built a modest house* on the site, & eventually acquired all the property between what today is Paramount Drive & the Davis Creek. This photo shows Felker's sons (including Hiram) & Felker's widow, Mary (Bentley), at the funeral in 1880.
Hiram A. Felker (1822-1911took over the farm. His wife, Mary (Cowan) Felker outlived her husband by only 4 years. Both are buried in nearby Felker Cemetery, on Mud Street.
The family name also lives on the Felker Falls Conservation area, which was located on Hiram Felker's farm after c.1890. Today it sits at the edge of "Satellite City".

Johnn Friedrick Völkel was born 17 Nov 1757 at Siegen-Wittgenstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany & Johann Federick is the son of Anna KATHARINA, Amos & Johann Eckart Völkel.
English name variation were first Folker, Falker & finally as Felker.
John Felker is thus the step-son of Joseph Jost Volckel & also his uncle. John's mother, Maria Catharina Amos, remarried after the death of her 1st husband: John Eckhart Volckel - Joseph is John's brother.

* VIllage of Erndtebrück, Germany
The village of Erndtebrück was undoubtedly first settled in the upper part hill where the houses nestle themselves up against the 'castle' hill. This village needed protection, when on the cold winter nights, packs of wolves howled from the surrounding hills. Not a stout city wall, but rather a picket fence or thorny-hedge placed on a low wall served as the boundary fence.

Now the Customs & Toll Collector, alone in his little office house, could not get at the purses of the travelers who sometimes tried to charged though in groups without paying. The Toll Collector would sound his horn to summon the local cart drivers to deal with a travelers with spears & pitchforks approaching from the city. Running the toll booth seems to have been an universal challenge.

Many of the buildings in Erndtebrück were destroyed in the bombing on 10 March, 1945 at the end of World War II, including the Toll Collectors house & the oldest Luther church where the Volkels prayed & married. The church with its steeple, has been rebuilt in the same style & sits on high point overlooking the village. Similarly there are some beautiful rebuilt houses with gardens completely surrounding the path & stairway leading to the Evangelische-Reformiert Kirche. - Translated from German. PJA 2009.

. Port of Philadelphia: Philadelphia would seem an unlikely candidate as a major immigration port of entry, but 1.3 million immigrants passed through the port. The route took immigrants around Cape May at the foot of New Jersey, into the Delaware Bay & up the Delaware River to Philadelphia, adding more than 200 miles to the journey from Europe. & the trip wasn't without its hazards. The Delaware River often froze over during winter, limiting early immigration to warmer months. During the 1700s, there was an influx of German many of whom arrived as indentured servants or "redemptioners" who often stayed in the city to work off the cost of the passage.

NJV Loyalists, John Falker was quartermaster the Third Battalion from its organization until 1781, then transferred to the Second Battalion & resigned at the end of the War on Feb. 22, 1783.
Daniel James, on the Resignation of Quartermaster Falker, took this office & so continued until the 2nd Battalion was disbanded. William Felker (transcription?) Resigned Quartermaster, 2nd Bat. NJV.

. 1823 Mar 26 Registered - John Felker sold 200 acres to Frederick Felker, Bargain & Sale. Ref: Book B, #933.

* The farm land at Stoney Creek is near the City of Hamilton, Ontario. This farm now bears a housing sub-division, but on a portion remains at the Felker's Falls Conservation Park. The land sits on the Niagara Escarpment Corridor. Davis Creek runs through the old farm, with a two terraced veiled waterfalls over 70 feet high, creating a small plunge pool at the bottom. This would be a good place to keep your churned butter from turning rancid & No doubt, the Felkers too cooled off in the pool on a hot day. The Bruce Hiking Trail pass by the top of the falls. Through the grove of maple trees you can see lower Stoney Creek & further on to the blue of Lake Ontario.
Out along the now paved east side of Mud Road you can see the former Felker's stone blacksmith shop. - PJA.
