10925 Charity Gerow....from Mildred Smith's records - June 1973

Charity's land petitions reveal what kind of a woman she was and, to some extent, what her life was like in New Brunswick.

Even after Captain Isaac's death she must have had a certain amount of comfort and security in New York City, the British capital in North America from 1776 to 1783. However, she had a difficult time getting sufficient rations for herself and her family and appealed to Sir Guy Carelton for help.

When the peace was signed to end the American Revolution it was impossible for Charity and her little children to return home. Even before hostilities had broken out they had been forced away from their North Castle farm. Rioting rebel mobs had, from 1770 on, persecuted families with known Loyalist sympathies and especially families with husbands in the British army.

In 1780 the New York Legislature passed a law that Loyalist wives and their children under 10 had 20 days to get out of the state.
When peace was signed in 1783 the families that had fled to New York City had to be taken to land still under the British flag before the British surrendered New York City. Otherwise they would suffer at the hands of mobs.
Even if kin took them into their homes, mobs might drag them out, tar and feather them, cut off their ears etc.....

In 1783 Charity Gerow and her family and a large number of other Loyalists were transported from New York City to New Brunswick. A book called "Early Loyalist St. John" by D.H. Bell, 1983 states "widow Charity Gerow from Westchester County, N.Y. and 4 sons went July 1783 to N.B. on the refugee ship "Montague". Her 2 daughters and their husbands, and her 2 nephews were on the same ship". There she petitioned the Govenrment for land and received a large tract of land alongside Washademoak Lake. She only owned the land until 1805 when she sold the land to James Henry and went to live with her daughter, Phoebe Sherwood.

There is also a record that Charity remarried after 1803 to John Pickett but that this marriage did not last long. There is also a record in New Brunswick of the burial of Charity Rickets buried Oct. 20, 1840 but it is believed to be Charity Pickett. Charity Ricket ( Pickett ) was buried by Rector Harrison of St. Luke's Anglican in Loyalist Cemetery, King's Square, Saint John, New Brunswick. This information provided by records of Mildred M. Smith - 1980.

10930 Charles farmed in London Twp. and about 1824 he moved to Westminster Twp. and married Maria. He resided in Westminster for more than 40 years. In the 1860s he sold and moved to Michigan USA

[Guy St. Denis - Byron: Pioneer Days in Westminster Township, p119-120] In 1819 Charles Montague was located by Colonel Talbot on a lot of land in London Township. Several years later, on August 17, 1824 he married Maria, daughter of Samuel Hungerford from the neighbouring township of Westminster. This wedding was apparently celebrated in Westminster, as Byron was then called, and there the Montagues continued their married life. Over the years Montague amassed a considerable estate in the Byron area.... He eventually moved to Strathroy, apparently in the mid to late 1850s. In 1863, after a sojourn in Ray, Macomb County, Michigan, Montague and his wife moved to Caro in Tuscola County, Michigan. Maria Montague died August 4, 1889 and was soon followed by her husband who died on September 15 of the same year.

In 1833, Joseph Kilbourn Jr. sold L50 to Charles Montague and moved to Detroit.
The original patentee of lot 50 in the first concession was Charles Montague. This wedge-shaped property contained 45 acres of lnand and was bounded by the Delaware-Westminster townline. Montague came to acquire this lot during a Crown lands auction held in London on October 21, 1839. Montague was born on December 31, 1799 in Somerset, England, the son of William Montague and Ann Cayford.

The south part of L47 in the Concession B was sold by John Kent to Charles Montague in 1840

In September 1840 Charles Montague sold the northwest quarter of L41 in the first concession, along with part of its broken front, to Samuel Hungerford (his father-in-law)

James Palmer sold L49 in broken front concession A to Charles Montague in 1836

First Appendicitis Operation in Ontario:
> An incident in Dr. McNaughton's life must be respected here. Mr. Charlie Walker took sudden with appendicitis. Dr McNaughton summoned Dr McKinnon of Hillsburgh & Dr MacKinnon of Guelph, & in silence they performed the first successful appendix operation ever known in Ontario. Just fancy, no hospital ward or operating accessories, but in his own home on a table. The silence was so necessary that the board sidewalk in front of the house was laid with sawdust.
There were 2 Doctors living in fine homes. Dr. McNaughton, an army surgeon who knew just the medicine to take, as he used to try location with a fist punch. If above the belt line, you took Senna tea, if below, a tablespoon of Epsom or a dose of castor oil. All were sure cures. He was thorough & punctual. In the dark night his horse and buggy never failed if he was needed, and was often heard going over the bridge on his mercy calls.

Coroner Hilliker has deemed at autopsy necessary as the result of the peculiarities incident to the death of Mrs. Mary Webb at her home, 203 South division last evening. The woman died suffering intense agony & frothing at the mouth. There were other symptoms of poisoning & the coroner decided that an investigation should be made. Coroner Hilliker scouts the theory of suicide & believed death was due to a disease of the heart. Coroners Hilliker & LeRoy will hold a post mortem examination this afternoon & establish beyond question the cause of the woman's death. The appearance of the Webb household would indicate that the father had difficulty in making both ends meet & that he is a sober & industrious man. Webb knows of no reason why his wife should commit suicide & is heartbroken because of her sudden decease. There are 2 children surviving.
