LAWRENCE, our subject, who passed to his rest in 1877, universally mourned as a sincere friend & upright citizen & for 30 years been identified with the advancing interests of Berrien Co., Michigan. Born in Toronto, Canada, removed from his birthplace with his parents to the State of New York, where he was reared & educated. His ancestors were natives of England but the father & mother*, appreciation the advantages offered by the United States, early located in the dominions of the Federal Gov. & citizens were true & loyal. * Note1*: Perhaps Daniel was sent to live in NY State, but evidence by Daniel's siblings states their father Richard Lawrence, Sr. died by Jul 1831 in Woodhouse, Ontario, Canada. Other statements by the Lawrence children places Richard Lawrence constantly in Ontario, with only the years 1821-1830 not explicitly documented as his being in Woodhouse, Ontario. The estimated death of their mother, Mrs. Mary Willson Lawrence, is 1821. - PJ Ahlberg, 2012 . Our subject made his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, while young & was there united in marriage with Miss Jane Crawford & with his estimable wife continued to reside in the Buckeye State for many years. A family of 8 sons & daughters, all born in Ohio, blessed the fireside with their cheerful presence. In 1857, Daniel T Lawrence decided to try the farther West & following the tide of travel journeyed to Michigan with his family & settled permanently a short distance from Benton Harbor. In time death deprived the brothers & sisters of their devoted mother & a 12 month later the father also died. The children now residing in Berrien Co. are William, John & 2 daughters. John Lawrence was but a little lad when he left his native State, Ohio & came to Michigan. He attended to manhood in the country, attended excellent schools of his home district & enjoyed the benefit of a course of instruction in Indiana College at South Bend, from which well known institution he graduated with honor. He successfully taught school in the country 24 years, 22 years of which time he was a valued teacher of Benton Twp. A public spirited citizen & active worker in all matters of mutual welfare, John Lawrence was appreciated by his fellow townsmen & in 1882 he was elected to the office of Supervisor, the duties of which position he continued to discharge with faithfully ability for about 9 years. At the expiration of this length of time he resigned in order to accept the office of County School Commissioner, tendered to him in the fall of 1891. A prominent factor in education advancement, Mr. Lawrence had since 1881 continuously been a member of the Board of Examiners & for one term gave universal satisfaction in his official work as County Commission of Schools. While John Lawrence was with genuine enthusiasm gave his time & earnest efforts to the cause of education & has aided materially in the advancement of the schools of county, giving especial attention to the methods & manner of instruction, his brother WILLIAM was found active & profitable employment in another field of work. William Lawrence is numbered among the substantial general agriculturist & fruit-growers of Berrien Co. The brothers, unmarried, own together a fine cultivated farm of 50 acres, which is partially devoted to the culture of fruit & annually yields & excellent crop of hay. John & William Lawrence occupy positions of useful influence & widely known & highly esteemed as representative men of the county, actively participate in social & business. Fraternally, John Lawrence is valued member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The brothers are in political affiliation stanch Republicans, but our subject Daniel T Lawrence, was a lifetime adherent of the Democratic party. The father was ever deeply interested in local & national issues. The sons are thoroughly posted in the affairs of the day & intelligently do their full duty as earnest American Citizens. 11560 | Daniel married Jane Blount on 27 Jun 1809 in Bloomfield. They had 10 children, 7 sons and 3 daughters. Daniel Leavens was a son of the pioneer Benjamin, and came to Canada when only eleven years old. He succeeded his father in the ownership of the old homestead lying to the northwest of Bloomfield. It has been handed down through successive generations, and to-day remains in the possession of a descendant of its pioneer proprietor. The old homestead, built of cedar logs, although greatly benefited by many times repairs, and largely extended by additions found necessary, still stands, like some old jewel in a new setting. Daniel made his house a home by marrying Jane Blount in 1809. The ceremony was performed before Stephen Conger, a Justice of the Peace; for ministers were scarce in those days and their services were often dispensed with by espousing couples. The seventeen-year-old bride was the daughter of Cornelius Blount. He was one of Hallowell 's early settlers who came in with the Bowermans. Purchasing land from the Crown, he settled at Bloomfield near his fellow-travelers. It is related that he was compelled to carry on his back all the way from Picton, six miles distant, the only board he could find suitable for a door for his log cabin. Although brought up a Presbyterian, he became an orthodox Friend, probably through the influence of his wife, whose maiden name was Lydia Bull. In his house is said to have been held the first Friends' meeting in Prince Edward County. Daniel Leavens was drafted in the War of 1812, but for the sum of eighty dollars he was able to provide a substitute. During that war he engaged in transporting troops and military stores from Kingston to Toronto. He was a magistrate when he died in 1879 at the old age of ninety years. His wife lived to be seventy-five, and died in 1868. Source: Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, Page 481-482 | LEAVENS, Daniel (I19336)

11562 | Daniel was living in Picton in 1869, this may be before his marriage in Feb 1869 or after. The witnesses at the wedding were Eliza Goodmurphy Cooper and her husband, Rensaler Cooper. Sometime in 1869, Daniel and Maria must have moved to Sophiasburg Twp, as their first child, Wilfred, was born in Sophiasburg Twp. It is believed that the other two children, Ralph and Annie were also born in Sophiasburg Twp. The 1881 Census has the family still living in Sophiasburg Twp. The 1891 Census has Daniel & Maria listed under Hastings County and living in West Deseronto. Daniel is listed as a carpenter for his occupation and a Methodist by religion. Daniel moved to Valleyfield, Quebec in the summer of 1899, presumably for work.He had been ill for about tren days before his death. Daniel was a Millwright by occupation. He had lived in Deseronto for 14 years. Daniel & Maria are both buried in Deseronto, Ontario. | GOODMURPHY, DANIEL (I7)

Description Lot 26, Con 1 Yonge St., Vaughan Twp., Ontario: William Ladner Willson used this ravine to build his saw mill. The pond would have spilled out onto the present day Bayview Avenue as Willet Creek follows the junction of Vaughan & York Twps. which in turn is at the base of a steep hill. The similar terrain in adjacent Lot 25 York Twp., belong to his brother-in-law, Richard Lawrence & on the north side of at Lot 27, Markham Twp., was another relative, John Arnold. William Ladner Willson used this ravine to build a saw mill. The pond spilled out onto the present day Bayview Avenue where Willet Creek follows the junction of Vaughan & York Townships, which in turn is at the base of a steep hill. Near Bayview & Steeles Avenues there is a beautiful forest glade at the very end of the street. The area is surrounded with houses. It is like stepping into another world with white pine trees soaring everywhere overhead. The mature thick pine & beech forest prevents little undergrowth plants. Covered by a carpet of pine needles & fallen branches, lies the traces of a foundations of a house. A fifty foot pine has now fallen over the ruins Once this building overlooked a small deep ravine & the mill waterway. Just 15 feet from their door William & family could collect nuts from the beech tree sitting on the edge of the cliff. Some years before an ancient white pine had fallen on the slopes leaving a stump of 6 feet or more in diameter at the bottom of the ravine. Even sitting in the valley bottom land, it too would have been the tallest tree soaring into the blue sky. A pair of woodpeckers darted here & there. Fair to say this place was & is a magnificent site. - P J Ahlberg, Toronto, 2008. . 1813 April 27 - William Willson, John Willson Sr., Parole at York Garrison, 1st York Reg.
