In keeping with his upbringing and occupation, Harry was an ardent outdoorsman. The day he passed away in the winter of 1978, he was making preparations for one of his favourite pasttimes, ice fishing. Harry never lost touch with Cockburn Island, being one of the few landowners who refused to sell the family homestead to the Ontario Paper Company, when that firm was purchasing old farmland to convert to spruce plantations. He had been in ill health with a heart ailment for 10 years. Mr. Goodkins was born March 7, 1889, in Veedersburg, the son of Frank & Emma Wertz Gookins. For 28 years, he was employed at the Indiana Condensed Milk Co. of Veedersburg. He married Mamie Leighty, who preceded him in death. He later married Ruth Smith, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gerald; 2 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Eunice Cook of Veedersburg, & Mrs. Marie Mills of Noblesville. Mr. Gookins was a member of the Veedersburg Evangelical United Brethren Church, the Masonic Lodge, & a former member of the Veedersburg Band. Services were held at 1:30 Monday at the Veedersburg Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Weaver officiating. Burial was in Rockfield Cemetery with the J.
