14201 James A is the son of Agusta Dillion & James De la Hooke, Sr., Wembury, Devon, England.

Married first in 1844 to Sarah England, &
2nd marriage to Maria Louisa Dension.

Dr. De La Hooke, the first physician in the village, joined this same year in 1858, & became Lodge doctor. (i.e.. Weston Orange Lodge L.O.L No 216).
We Cannot find any record of a practicing physician in Weston previous to 1839, in which year Dr. James Acland De La Hooke joined the community of the Humber. The villagers at "The Humber" were delighted to welcome a doctor to their midsts, in the person of De DLH. He was licensed by the Royal College of surgeons in London in 1837 & soon after received an appointment as an army medical officer & was sent out to join the garrisons at Kingston & Toronto. He resigned his commission & moved to the village in 1839. During the time he resided in the village he acted as medical officer to the York cavalry & each year went to camp with them.
the local physician did not hang out the customary shingle, but at the side of his door was posted a list of his charges for attending maternity & other calls. Following the severe flood of 1850, he established himself on the Plank Road*, at the corner now occupied by Inch's Drug Store. Diphtheria & Smallpox were 2 diseases that struck terror into the villagers of these early days. Some families lost several children with one or other of these diseases.

The doctor was a fine horseman & always kept several spirited beats that he rose in making his professional visits. We are informed that some call took him 25 or 30 miles. He loved to play cricket with the boys at the Grammar School & took great pleasure in organizing the school cricket club of which Vernon Wadsworth was one of the outstanding players. Games were arranged with Trinity School.

Dr De La Hooke's first wife dies in 1846 & some time later he married Miss Maria Louisa Denison. After 30 years of active practice in Weston, he moved into Toronto in 1870, where he remained until his death, Sept 18, 1897. He was buried in the Denison burying ground , St. Jon's on the Humber, beside h is wife who predeceased him on July 1st, 1887.
In 1871, DR DeLaHooke's house, at the corner of Main & Johns Streets Wadsworth was occupied by Hon E H Spring Rice.

. Lawrence Boggs, of Newark. James Boggs was a keen & prosperous business man & for his day was very wealthy. At his decease his personal property was reckoned to amount to more than S200, 000. He lived for many years at 113 Chambers St., New York City, where every appointment was most luxurious & he dispensed a grand hospitality. It was here that his daughter Mary Rebecca was married. He also owned another home at Bloomingdale, known as "Chevilly," formerly the residence of Lieut. Governor Broome, his father-in-law. This residence was of considerable historic interest. It was built by Mme. d'Auliffe, maid-of-honor to Marie Antoinette. She fled from France to escape the horrors of the French Revolution, & erected this residence for herself. It lay to the west of Broadway between 72nd & 73rd streets. The famous Talleyrand & General Moreau had been guests in the house.
In the years 1794-1798 & again in 1S02 yellow fever was very prevalent in Philadelphia, & we find a letter written in 1802 by Dr. James Boggs to his son Robert, speaking of his anxiety concerning his son James in Philadelphia, & expressing his satisfaction at knowing that James had promised to remove "his store to Germantown." James was recovering from some illness & severe trouble with his eyes & was "to go to Yellow Springs to drink the waters." In 1820 James & his son visited his parents & other relatives at Halifax, N. S., which fact is referred to in a letter from his mother to her son Robert, Nov. 24th 1820.

14222 James Henry (Jim) Moore was diagnosed with Malignant Hyperthermia in the late 1980s. This is a rare, genetic condition that could be fatal under certain conditions. It was discovered when he almost died during an operation to remove polyps from his throat. It amounts to a severe reaction to certain drugs, particularly anaesthetics, or excessive overheating that causes the body to overheat so rapidly that one can die within fifteen minutes once the process has started. All other blood relatives have been cautioned that the chance they have this condition is high and have been encouraged to be tested. All relatives have been instructed to wear medic alert bracelets whether they have been tested or not. A few have undergone testing to date (1999) and most tested positive for the condition.

Jim suffered a severe stroke in approximately 2004. It affected the complete left side of his body and he never regained the use of his limbs. His speech returned soon after the stroke but it was affected and never returned to normal.

Jim died following about a month of dealing with congestive heart failure and pneumonia. On the day before he died, his handshake was still formidable.

West of Yonge Street was the lot on which Knox Church was afterwards built. A comparatively small wooden structure was erected about 1843 at the time of the disruption of the Scottish Church. This was occupied temporarily by the congregation of the Presbyterian Free Church, of which the Rev. Obituary, James Marshall Fernley,
On Wednesday of last week [ Oct 23 1925]' there died at his home in Toronto one of Nature's noblemen, in the person of Marshall Fernley. Mr. F. had been sited with an affection of the hear valves a few days previously & succumbed after a brave fight for live, leaving his devoted wife & family in great sorrow by their sudden bereavement.
Mr F was a son of Joseph Fernely, for many years an esteemed resident of Acton, most of which was spent on the Abram Matthews farm on which Mr G H Switzer no leaves. He spend his youth and manhood in Acton. About 40 years ago married Miss Diana , daughter of Mr & Mrs John Matthews. A very happy married life followed & Mrs Fernley & their son & 2 daughters survive him.
Several years after their marriage Mr & Mrs Fenley removed to Brantford where he was engaged in Mercantile business.
About 20 years as Toronto was chosen as their future home & there he have rested ever since. Mr. F. being engaged in the insurance business, latterly as inspector of agencies of the Northern Life Assurance Co.
From his youth Marshall Fernley was posses of sterling character & high principles. Action upon the example of his Master, Jesus Christ, he went about doing good. Where sickness or need was helens a helping hand. His tender love & solicitude for those who were suffering was admirable. As a Christian worker in organized church & community he was a valued character. He died holding the important position of Superintendent ofSunday School of North Parkdale United Church. Incidentally it is significant that for 27 years this important Sunday School has been controlled by Acton boys. Mr S H Moore was the superintendent & when he returned to untie with a school nearer his place of residence, his immediate successor was J M Ferney who for 13 years has carried it forward with splendid success.
I was hugely through Mr F. initiative & effort that a commodious modern Sunday School building was erected half a dozen years ago.
Mr. Fernley dies in his 61st year. A public funeral was held on Friday afternoon from North Park United church, Rev J Norris Gray, being in charge. Internment was made at Park Lawn Cemetery.

- Mr A E Nicklin, JP, Mr & Mrs A T Brown, R N Brown, Postmaster Matthews were at Toronto on Friday attending the funeral of the late J M Fernley.

Historical Sketch of Huron co.
Canada Land Company's plan prepared in York. First to arrive was Alex McGregory. During this time also arrived John Wilson, who built a house & tannery on the harbor flat, being the first tannery the Huron Tract. Mr. [Jacob] Willson in the company with Jacob Cooper., Valentine & Michael Fisher & some others were sent up from York in a schooner at the expense of the Company. These were all Yonge street men. Before the establishment of a post office William Reid used to make semi-monthly trips to Guelph to bring the letters for the Company's agents, & any settlers who were so fortunate as to" receive letters mere charged extra for their 'carriage from Guelph. Of course during this time the new ' settlers' were obliged to endure the hardships & privations incident to pioneer. life - hardships which are too well understood to require a recital here; but, they were undertaken & borne with a patience & perseverance which soon began to beat fruit in the shape of substantial comforts such as unremitting toil can produce.
The Canada Company erected some cheap buildings - which should be called sheds - near the harbor for the accommodation & shelter of settlers until they could erect houses for themselves, In these sheds Wr. Reid fitted he first tavern or public house with which Goderich was blessed.
About. this time W. F: Gooding, was the first settler settler & trader, & was joined in mercantile enterprise by his brothers, Jasper & Edwin R. ; * soon after Benjamin Hale' arrived & opened the second store in the place. 1812, George Fraser arrived.
