Ref: Elora Backwoodsman newspaper, published 1852 Jul 15. . 1991 Dec 3 - Darby House, Elora's premier hotel of the 19th centre. Robt Dalby was an Elora businessman who sought to build a strong industrial base in the village un the 1870s. He no longer had time to look after the management of the Dalby House, & in 1873 he headed the hotel for 5 years to James All, who had been managing a hotel in Harrison who proved to be an immediate disaster as a hotelkeeper. The Dalby House soon los its reprobation. In 1874 to salvage the business, Robt. Dalby went part way down Metcalfe Street to the Royal Hotel. He hired the Royal's manager, Frank Vickers, to restore the Royal hotel. The Vickers family had been in the hotel business in Elora for over 20 years. Frank Vickers had been successful in the livery & cartage businesses as wells running the Royal. Much of the Vickers reputations based on the culinary skills of Frank's wife, Maria & his daughter, Mary Jane. They brought the Royal's dinning room reputation with them to the Dalby House & succeeded in rebuilding the business. They made special efforts to appeal to commercial travelers, who by this time, were becoming the mainstay of the hotel business. In 1878 [or 1870?] the family was forced to relinquish the job, due to the illness of Maria Vickers. Frank Vickers returned to the livery business. Management of the hotel returned to the Frank Dalby family. Ref: Elora Sentinel newspaper, article by Steve Thorning. - - - | SARGENT, Maria (I355)
