Obituary:
. We are called upon this week to record the death of a respected nonagenarian, in the person of Mrs. Mary McCutcheon, who departed this life last Wednesday, in her 95 year.
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon from the residence of her son, Mr. Stewart McCutcheon, Lot 9, Con. 4, Erin, to the Ballinafad Cemetery.
Deceased came to this country with her husband, Hugh McCutcheon, & 2 children (one of which died on ship board) from the County of Down, Ireland, & settled 30 miles from Montreal. After living there for a few years, they came to Erin Tp., about 65 years ago, [c 1828] & hewed out a home for themselves in the forest where they since lived & died. Their family consisted of nine children, six of whom are still living.
Mrs. McCutcheon has been a widow for 32 years, & has continued to live on the homestead, with her son. In earlier days, she was a Congregationalist, but latterly was a member of the Disciple Church. 2 sons, Stewart & Thomas, live in Erin, Tp., & Robert, in Manitoba; 2 daughters, Mrs. Smith & Mrs. R. Hamilton, reside in Erin, & Mrs. Fieldon, in Seattle, Montana. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Baker & Mr. Fowley.

STEWART, Mary (I460)

15661 Mary is the daughter of Alice & Alexander Stewart. (Verify)

. After Mary's 9 children were grown Mary returned to Ireland to visit her family. In an often repeated story, great-granddaughter, Marie Felker, recalled that Mary McCutcheon had ridden her horse all the way through the wild bush to Lake Ontario, [to the Port of Oakville] to take her first round of vessels up Lake Ontario & up the St. Lawrence to Ireland." It seems this monumental horse ride made more of an impression on the family than Mary Stewart McCutcheon's ocean voyage! - P J Ahlberg.

. Mary went to Montreal to visit her people & as there were no railroads, she rode horseback to Oakville then took the boat to Montreal. I know once Mary came back from Montreal & rode home alone on horseback. She had a big load, as her people had given her so much to take back to the bushland. She got very tired & people along the way made her stay overnight with them & rest.

. Lieut. Colonel John Lawrence was the son of Wm. & Margaret Lawrence. He was born Apr 10, 1754; & died Dec 30, 1821 at Vaughn, Canada ae. 66. He married on Staten Island, May 4, 1783, Mary Rezeau, Daughter of Peter & Mary who died Sept 18, 1842. They had 11 children.

. RICHMOND ROAD, Current Courthouse is the third in Richmond, was erected in 1827. Across the road from St. Andrew's Church was the LaTourette House is on was once the location of a Revolutionary War-era fort, mills & quarries. In this was the headquarters for Lieut. Colonel John Graves Simcoe & his officers. Two battles actually took place here, at the near by St. Andrews Church. One can see the close circle where John Lawrence & Mary Rezeau could have first met.

. REZEAU BURIAL GROUND, A portion of the Rezeau family burial ground adjoins the courthouse on the west. Susannah Van Pelt, who lacked but 6 months & 5 days of reaching the century mark, was the last of the 5 generations of Rezeau to be buried here.

. REZEAU HOUSE, Said to be very old; is now the unpretentious southern portion of a saloon on the west side of the Fresh Kill Road just south of Center Street.

. DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH SITE, Opposite the Rezeau house,
on property now owned by William Flake at the southern corner of Center Street, formerly stood the Dutch Reformed Church; date of erection not known. As the first English missionary came to Staten Island about 1702 & held services in the French church at Green Ridge until St. Andrew's was finished in 1711, it is possible that the Dutch church was not standing at that time. This building was burned by the British "because it was a rebel church." About 1798, members of the Reformed Church at Port Richmond secured permission to erect a new house of worship on the foundations of the old, but curiously enough they spoke of it as "The Old French Protestant Church." It stands on the corner of Fresh Kill & Mill Roads. This building was completed in 1808 & was used up to about 1884, when it was abandoned & fell on evil times.

US CIVIL WAR:
. 1856 Jun 14 - Houston, Missouri, Father Richard Patterson resided here. Although Mary Patterson was clearly born in Ontario, her family referred to her as an American. This would indicate she had lived in Missouri with her father & siblings.
Granddaughter Marie Felker recalled that Mary Patterson said the reason the family moved up north to Canada was because of the coming civil war which was from 1861-65. In some towns in the southern States, you would be run out if your favoured President Lincoln. Mary was 7 years old in 1856 in Missouri. Mary would only have been 13y at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 & Catchpole grandparents are already dead. Notwithstanding Mary Patterson was married Jan 1, 1872 to John Felker in Belwood, Ontario.
The farm on Garafraxa was pretty far from anywhere, except for the Methodist log cabin which was a short walk away. Douglas, as Belwood was formerly known, was known for its cattle which they would ship by train to Toronto. - PJ Ahlberg.

In 1700, he was one of the signers of a remonstrance against the Proprietors of NJ, asking for the appointment of a competent Governor. This apparently did not occur, as in 1701, he signed a similar petition to have the Province of NJ taken under protection of the King unless the Proprietors appointed a suitable governor. He was one of the earliest members of the Baptist church at Middletown.

. During its lifetime Belwood used 3 names Skeneville & Douglas being the first two & in 1878 the hamlet was still known as Garafraxa Village & the post office there operated as Douglas. . Shand Dam was built during the early 1940's. Before some of its buildings were removed to higher ground, the village boasted a mill, post office, lime kilns, grain elevator, foundry, shoe shop, sash & door factory, hardware & drug store, shoe shop, tailor shop, grocery stores, jewellery store, barber shop & library, butcher shop, blacksmith shop, branch bank, hotel, churches, and town hall. And in 1869, Garafraxa divided into 2 townships–East and West.
. In 1837, there were only 3 teams of horses in Fergus, & they belonged to Messrs Black, Watt & Webster. Cattle were almost as scarce & money even more so. Business was nearly all done by trade up to the year '45 & later. There was but little grain for sale & the prices in trade very low. Oats ruled at six pence, mill seeds 3 coppers more, wheat 2 shillings & 3 pence & 9 pence for all. No sale for potatoes. There was no butcher and little meat.
. 1842 - There was no Belwood road - all going up the Owen Sound road to the Green settlement. The Belwood road was surveyed & under-brushed in '42, the directions to the surveyor being to keep on dry ground & thus a crooked road came to pass." 1842 was the year of the great snow, coming Nov. 1st and staying till April 14th.

. Felker Family History, 1981 March 23, by Mrs. T J Hutchison:
Old Mrs. Felker was probably the first white woman to sleep in Garafraxa Township. This was a statement made by John Dobbin in a newspaper article in March 9, 1869 issue of Guelph Mercury. John Dobbin Sr. had come to the Carmel-Dracon area of Garafraxa Twp. in July 1826, with his family of 12 children, although some of the girls may not have come, for they married in Galt-Hespeler area.
But John Dobbin records that they were preceded by the Felker, Headley & Meredith families in March 1826. This was over a year before the first tree was cut in Guelph. They came by way of what is now 15 Sideroad, but there was no road then, only the original survey done in 1821. (There should be a copy of this letter in the Museum, along with several other letters that ran in the Guelph Mercury about that time. In the article John Dobbin continued, Mrs Felker is still living on W half Lot 16, Con 7, 6th line, where she moved 43 years ago (1826) (but the newspaper clipping itself was not dated.)
