15711 | Mary is the daughter of Susan Estell & Samuel Willson. * 1900 Jan. - Second Generation Seventh child: Mary, who settled, lived & died on part of the farm, not in my possession, married William Chadwick. [Mary Willson was the third wife of Wm. Chadwick] They had one son, Asa Chadwick, who went to the Western part of Pennsylvania, & there died, leaving a small family. . 1792 Jul 4 - Mr. Chadwick as the contractor to carry the mails between Elizabethtown & Sussex Court House. Asa Chadwick probably lived in the vicinity of Sussex Court House, due to the fact that “he expects to get his sureties near you.” The extent that the Postal System was willing to go to accommodate the public, not only in mail deliveries but also in coordinating, if possible, the mail deliveries with the printing of newspapers is quite interesting. The contract entered into by Asa Chadwick required that he make the mail trip between Elizabethtown & Sussex Court House with the interim stops once a week, leaving Elizabethtown each Wednesday & returning again on the following Tuesday. However, his responsibilities expanded very quickly by the authorization on June 12, 1792 of a post office in Rockaway, Morris County. Then on October 11, 1792 a post office would be authorized for Booneton, also Morris County. These post offices were added to the postal route being ridden by Asa Chadwick as indicated in the letters below from the General Post Office in Philadelphia. . SUSSEX COURT HOUSE, First Sussex County P.O. Len Peck Vol. 35/No. 4 NJPH Whole No. 168. The following letter addressed to Mr. Chillon Ford confirms the establishment of the post office at Rockaway, New Jersey. General Post Office Philadelphia 23 July 92 Mr. Chillon Ford [Postmaster at Rockaway] Sir; 1 am pleased to find by your letter of the 16th Instant enclosing your Bond & oaths, that you have accepted the appointment of Postmaster for Rockaway. The Postmasters at Newark & New York shall be informed of the establishment of your office. Asa Chadwick, the Postrider will be told to inform you on what days he will arrive at Rockaway. His contract obliges him to leave Elizabethtown every Wednesday & return again the Tuesday following. I am etc. P.W. . General Post Office Philadelphia, Oct. 11, 1792 , To Jno. Jacob Faisch, Esq. [manufacturer] . I have received your letter of the 6th inst. by Mr. Chadwick, & have agreed with him to carry the mail from Booneton to & from Sussex Court House & from Elizabethtown to New York, the times to correspond with his & your wishes as practicable, preserving a due connection with other mails. I also herewith send an appointment of Postmaster with the necessary papers to Mr. Rudolphus Kent whom you recommended for Booneton. I will write to the Postmaster at New York informing him of your plan of delivery & receiving letters there, but Mr. Chadwick must pay him the postage when he takes from the office those which you & they advise him to deliver at New York. For those extra services beyond his former engagement I allow Mr. Chadwick, (what he proposes) $10. a year. Signed, T.P. . 1793 Jan 10, Asa Chadwick paid $49.72 pay. Asa Chadwick continued to serve as post rider on the route between Elizabethtown. Numerous similar correspondence may also be found here. - PJA Ref: NJ Postal History Society, Leonard Peck, 1972. Obituary: Died at Sharon, East Gwilimbury, on Wednesday, June 3, 1857, Mary, relic to the late Mr. Hugh Willson, aged 89 years, less 2 days. The subject of this Obituary was born in duchess County, NY & immigrated to this country soon after the American Revolution. Her early education & ideas of mind was received amongst the religious under Friends, to which communion her parents belonged & many branches of her Fathers’s family have been & are conspicuous members. She maintained through all the vicissitudes of her long life, an unblemished reputation - remarkable for love, of quietude & the society of the good. Towards the close her mind seems to revisit the scenes of the childhood & youth & to mingle with the society of her Father’s house, where a recollection f early antidotes & familiar of early principles seemed to comfort her; & is several that from this stand point she took her view of her Heavenly home. The Lord granted me the privilege to visiting her several times previous to her death - to speak of Jesus - to read to her the previous promises & to pray of her. With others we stood at her bedside & with hearts lifted to the Father, of spirits, in humbleness begged that he would receive the dear depart soul, which seemed while stretching its opinion of light for its wondrous flight, to have left on the fair features an indication of salvation by shedding over them a smile of indescribable sweetness. She lived to see the 4th generation of her offspring & has left behind her now living nearly all in this section of county, 16 children, including sons-in-law & daughters-in-law; 92 grandchildren, 90 great grandchildren & one great-great grand child. Her children & grandchildren are included the usual & respectable class of community. HHW. Ref: Newmarket New Era Newspaper. Transcripts by PJ Ahlberg. thank you. - - - | TITUS, Mary (I477)

Years elapsed, & Mary his granddaughter, the child of Capt. James Lawrence, as heir, claimed its restoration. The case was carried before King William the Fourth, in Council. On being told, he said: "She is the daughter of a brave sailor, let her take it." [The quote is recorded by Lorenzo Sabine, but where did he locate it? -PJA.] . 15733 | Mary Lyall was born 4 May 1774 on the Sunnyside Farm in the Borders region of Scotland. Sunnyside was between Chirnside and Reston, in Berwickshire, now located about two miles from the A1 highway. She was baptized 4 days later, on 8 May, by the Chirnside Parish Church. Her parents were Joseph Lyall (1740-1799) and Jean Simpson (1741-1810). Mary had at least 7 siblings: Isabel (1769-1793), Jean (b. 1772-1776), John (1776-1851), Joseph (b. 1780), Margaret, called Peggy (1784-1798), Elizabeth (1788-1820), and Beatrix (b. 1790). Mary’s father, Joseph, was mostly a farmer, but also had been a servant, of William Hall, who lived at the Whitehall estate, and Mrs. Ker of the Nisbet estate near Duns. In 1785, Joseph was said to be a resident of the village of Chirnside, and very soon afterwards, he moved to a local farm, Crowbut. Mary would have been ~ 11 years old at this time. The family lived here until Joseph’s death in 1799, and his wife, Jean, was also said to have passed away at Crowbut in 1810. Sometime around 1798, Mary married William Jeffrey. The details of this marriage are cloudy, because there is no official record of it in the Old Scottish Parish registers. But it was a legal marriage, because at the christening of her first son, Andrew, in 1800 in Foulden, he is said to be “the lawfull son of” William and Mary”. Mary and William’s second child, Isabella, was born 29 October 1801, and baptized on 13 December, also in Foulden. Around May, 1804, William Jeffrey, smith Foulden, signed a rental agreement (tack) to live and work the property of Swinewood Mill, which was a corn farm and mill on the Eye Water, near Reston. The agreement was to possess the property for a period of 19 years. It is unknown how long William and Mary actually lived and worked on this property. Mary was said to have at least 3 more children: Jean (1803-1887), Catharine (1806-1882), and Mary (1809-1883), but there are no birth or baptism records in the Old Scottish Parish registers for these births. The death records of these last three children all list ‘Scotland’ as their birthplace. On Mary Jeffrey Short’s tombstone, her birthplace is listed as Berwick, Scotland. In 1820, Mary and her family followed her husband, William, to Canada. Mary’s name appears on the passenger list of the ship, Malsham, traveling from Quebec City to Montreal in August 1820, along with her son, Andrew, and two other children. Her name next appears in the records of St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Cobourg. On 4 May 1823, George Gillespie and Isabella Jeffrey baptized their first child, Mary Gillespie. The godmother of this child is listed as “Grandmother, Mrs. Jeffrey.” Mary Gillespie was Mary Lyall Jeffrey’s first grandchild. Mary Lyall Jeffrey ended up with 37 grandchildren from her 5 children. Mary died on 26 May 1857, in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 83. The cause of death was listed as “old age.” She was buried the following day, 27 May 1857 in Little Lake Cemetery in Peterborough (Sect G, north of Chapel, Range 5s, lot 40, 915 Haggart St - see Library\Misc Stuff\Item 4 page 11), in a plot owned by Adam Hall, her son-in-law who was married to Catharine Jeffrey. Her tombstone reads, “Sacred to the memory of Mary Lyall, wife of William Jeffrey. Age 83 years.” BURIAL: From the register at Little Lake Cemetery: "Mary Lyall, wife of William Jeffrey, age 83. Born in Scotland, died in Peterborough. Cause of death: old age. Date of death: 26 May 1857", by Rev. Mr. Reger. John M. Reger was the Presbyterian minister in Peterborough at the time. | LYALL, Mary Edna (I53)
