25513 | WESTBROOK, James, Pte., served under Captain Daniel Springer 1812, 1814. Possible identification: Born August 25, 1786 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania, son of Leonard Westbrook & Margaret Brinck; married Susan Cathcart in New York; living in Ohio in 1820, and in Iowa in 1840; died June 25, 1854 in Sabula, Jackson, Iowa. "James Westbrook, a son of Leonard Westbrook, was located on the north p[art of lot 36. During the war he deserted to the enemy, and it was said that before he did so he sold his location to Silvanus Reynolds. But Reynolds later stepped forward and declared that he had no interest in, nor claim to the lot. It was then decided that the transaction, if any, was simulated by Westbrook possibly in an attempt to hold his location by subterfuge. This property was later granted to Sykes Tousley." 25514 | WESTBROOK, Leonard, Pte., served under Captain Daniel Springer 1814. Possible identification: born ca 1795, son of Leonard Westbrook & Margaret Brinck; found on 1851 census in Westminster, age 59 (born 1793 in United States), with wife Hannah. | WESTBROOK, Leonard (I1686)

25515 | WESTBROOK, Nicholas, Pte., served under Captain Daniel Springer 1814, received Land Claim Certificate Unit Flank Company 1st Regiment Middlesex Militia, vol 24, File 90 pages 1556-1557. Possible identification; born October 6, 1792 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania, son of Leonard Westbrook & Margaret Brinck; married Hannah Patrick; died August 17, 1862 in Williams Township, Huron County. Was his wife, Hannah Patrick, the daughter of Abraham & Lucy Patrick, b1806? The Delaware/Westminster book mentions her on p511 but says there is no other information. "The first wartime incident of squatting in the Byron area seems to have taken place on July 1, 1813 when Nicholas Westbrook assumed Robert Frank's location." "Westbrook...entered the province in February of 1810....a follower of Simon Z. Watson. On July 1, 1813 he went on Frank's lot evidently believing that it was really as vacant as it looked, and probably expecting that he would be confirmed there after the war. It is impossible to know what transpired between the two men concerning the lot, and perhaps it is just as well; in the end it was Frank who received the lot. Westbrook, who may have been paid for the work he did on Frank's land, later moved across the Thames River and took up land in neighboruing London Township." 25533 | Where in Sidney Township did the Captain live? In 1787 Meyers states in a petition that he drew Lots 8 & 9, on Con 1, Sidney. It appears from Canniff interviews that he settled on lot 7, Con 1, opposite an island that is mentioned in Canniff's interviews as both Myers Island and Smith's Island. Today this lot is the core of the RCAF property in Trenton and the island [Bakers Island] still exists now attached by a causeway to the airbase. See this image from Google Maps. Interestingly, the patent in 1797 for lot 7 was to sons George and Tobias W. Meyers suggesting that John somehow had the land board assign the lot to them. In 1788 Meyers petitions for lots 1 to 13, Con 3 in Sidney and amazingly he is granted this whole section of land. See this chart of the original grantees in Sidney and you will see the extent of his grants. As early as 1788 Meyers is casting his eye on the Moira River as a mill site. In that year, in a different petition, Meyers asks for a grant on the east side of the Moira River for a Saw and Grist Mill. Meyers selected the Moira because it was narrow and shallow enough to build a dam and banks to sustain a mill pond. The Captain bought the north half of lot 5, Con 1, Thurlow from John Taylor around 1790 thinking that his mill and dam would be on this lot. In a petition of Catherine [Meyers] Bleecker, his daughter, dated 23 Feb 1791, Captain John Meyers is said to be "of Thurlow." In a petition dated July 1792 John states that he has built a Grist Mill on his land purchased from John Taylor. When it was surveyed more carefully he discovered that his dam encroached on Lot 4, an Indian Reserve. This was the subject of many petitions and was not resolved till the town plan of 1816 and 2 acres of lot 4 were granted to Meyers. Part of the mill still survives | MEYERS, John Walden (I18485)

25539 | While James died in Kincardine, he was buried in Clandeboye. This is according to the records of the Messiah anglican church in Kincardine which say he was buried in the” Clandeboye cemetery”. Ian Westell believes this was the Lewis Cemetery presumably beside his wife Jane. In 1963 all the tombstones were buried and a monument put up with all the names of those buried there. James' name does not appear however it is speculated that there was no tombstone as there was no money for one at the time of his death. -A copy of a 1932 report of the Cemetery Board contained in a London -middlesex Branch O.G.S. publication on cemeteries in middlesex county(No. 77 in Series) mentions that the number of internments was 50 yet the index in the publication only records 37 names so it is quite possible James could be buried there. note on baptisms Jame's and Bridget's children Robert and Vernatta and Mary were all baptized together on September 26,1851 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Lucan ,Biddulph Twp.midlesex county by J..D. Ryan priest - see baptism records catholic archives in London St Peter's Basilica also see web link attached . James owned land in Clandeboye Biddulph Township on lot 12 Hodgins St. First Concession.Bought on December 1st 1869 and sold in 1904 as well as lots 5 and 8,range 4 bought in 1869 and sold in 1876 .See land transactions. An article in the London Advertiser of Tuesdy,April 13,1875 reported that this house of James Waistell burned down. 'Fire At Ireland Village-Some days since the dwelling house, cabinet shop and turning shop of Mr. Wm Howard of the village of Ireland were destroyed by fire... At the same time the houses of MR.Jas Westle and Mrs. Hawkesworth were destroyed...." In 1904 he moves to his sons home in Kincardine.
