. KEARNY, Lawrence, naval officer, b. in Perth Amboy, N. J., 30 Nov., 1789; d. there, 29 Nov., 1868. He entered the U. S. navy as a midshipman in 1807, & served, during the continuance of the embargo & non-intercourse acts, on the flotilla of gun-boats under Com. John Rodgers. Subsequently he was on the frigates Constitution & President until 1810, when he was transferred to the Enterprise, & in March, 1813, was promoted lieutenant. He was actively employed in the defense of the coast of South Carolina & adjacent states during the war of 1812-'15, & after its close distinguished himself in clearing the West Indies & Gulf coast of pirates.
In 1826 he was given command of the Warren, & sent to the Levant, where he successfully attacked the Greek pirates, broke up their strongholds, & finally dispersed them, frequently capturing several vessels in a day, &at one time had more than 100 prisoners on board his vessel. On his return to the United States in 1832, he was made captain, & after various appointments on shore duty was given command of the "Potomac," & in 1841 advanced to the command of the East India squadron. He hoisted his broad pennant on the Constitution in the harbor of Rio de Janeiro, the first instance of that act being performed at a foreign station. While in the east he was active in the suppression of opium smuggling, & secured the rights of American merchants in China. Learning that a commercial treaty was about to be concluded between the English & Chinese governments, he at once communicated with the officials & secured a promise on the part of the Chinese government to extend similar facilities to American merchants. In consequence of this action, the U. S. government sent Caleb Cushing as special envoy to China, who negotiated the treaty that was ratified in July, 1845. While on his homeward voyage in 1843, Capt. Kearny stopped at the Hawaiian islands, & there protested against the treaty then in progress of settlement leading to the transfer of these islands to the British government. He afterward held various shore appointments, including the command of the New York station, the presidency of one of the naval boards of inquiry, & membership in the lighthouse board. In April, 1867, he was made commodore on the retired list, & he was also a member of the New Jersey board of pilot commissioner.

3209 . 1816-1819 - Names taken from an old Account book belonging to Arthur Lowell. In the fall of the year 1805, I removed to Homer, took the school in Homer village,.
... Mr. Osborn married, in Homer, Cortland county, New York, on March 31, 1814, Ruby W. Bishop, a daughter of Thomas Lee & Ruby (Webb) Bishop. The following is a list of the names of the pupils who attended my school, in the aggregate, during the time above mentioned... Family of T.L. Bishop, Esq., Asenath Bishop, Ruby Bishop, Hannah Bishop, Sophronia Bishop, Julia Bishop, Lucy Bishop, Cynthia Bishop, Cyrus Bishop, Amni Family of Eleazer Bishop Bishop, Thomas Bishop, Warren Bishop, Avery Bishop, Lucy Bishop.

Mrs. Osborn was of distinguished colonial & Revolutionary ancestry, being a direct descendant of the renowned Governor William Bradford, of Plymouth; also of the Adamses, Lee, Palmer, Hobart, Allen, Ripley, & others of the most notable families of New England. Through Mrs. Osborn her descendants are many times eligible to most of the patriotic societies of the United States. She was a close student & retained, almost to the hour of her death, a keen interest in affairs which pertained to public welfare. It is said that the editorials in her husband's papers were always submitted to her before publication & that she was often the proofreader for the entire paper.

A group of young men, who afterwards became well known in the state, were gathered in the office of the Western Register. Mrs. Osborn directed their course of study, & to her is given the credit of first discovering the poetical talent of Mr. Osborn's nephew, George W. Cutter, author of "E Pluribus Unum, Song of Steam & Buena Vista." She constantly encouraged these young men in all worthy effort & urged them to lofty aspirations, & their expressions of appreciation were a great solace to her in her declining years.

Mrs. Osborn died in Indianapolis on April 15, 1880, & is buried beside her husband in Forest Hill cemetery, in Greencastle, Indiana.

7 children were born to John Willson & Ruby (Bishop) Osborn, of which number 3 died in infancy. The 4 who lived to maturity were:

- Mary Caroline, who became the wife of Judge Samuel B. Gookins, of Terre Haute, died in Columbus, Georgia, August 26, 1889, & is buried in Woodlawn cemetery, Terre Haute;

- Bishop Webb, born in Terre Haute, died in Indianapolis on April 9, 1891, & is buried in Forest Hill cemetery, Greencastle;

- Hannah M. became the wife of Solomon Claypool & resides in Indianapolis;

- Ruby Alice, who was the wife of Hon. L. P. Chapin, long an honored citizen of Greencastle, & who is the subject of a sketch found elsewhere in this work, died in Indianapolis on November 6, 1907, & is buried in Forest Hill cemetery, Greencastle.

Elisha Lawrence married Sarah Devins.

Marriage #117 by Rev. William Jenkins, Richmond Hill.

HILLTOP GORE PIONEER CEMETERY was made unique; lacking common characteristics that typically served to distinguish a village.
In the place of a formal church stood a schoolhouse. With a removable altar, for use on Sundays, the school became an available and convenient resource to various religious denominations.
It was often referred to as "The Schoolhouse Burying Ground" and sometimes as the Anglican and Methodist Cemetery.

This Protestant school, built in 1835, was the first in Toronto Gore. It stood on top of the hill, on the northern edge of the cemetery. It was one room, about 30 square feet, built of hardwood logs lined with dressed lumber. At capacity, the schoolhouse held as many as 80 pupils.

. 1966, the cemetery was again set in order; the brush cleared, the ground leveled and the larger stones set on concrete foundations, and re-lettered. The monuments that were flat were built into a concrete cairn with a central monument

3228 . 1837 Dec 26th, Major John Lawrence wrote cousin W H Tisdale of Vitoria, Long Point.
Its authenticity is indisputable. the writing is the same as that in the Lawrence family bible, now the property of Mr Sam Lawrence, 92 Roehampton Ave., son of the writer: & the events & persons mentioned are well remember by the descendants of the family. To him it is the vice of his childhood. The family Bible & other genealogical records substituted the authenticity of the communications. "Father would just be about 20 years of age when he wrote that letter, Mr Lawrence told the Star. Mr. Tisdale was a relative of ours & a friend of many years.
And your grandfather, the man who warned the governor of the advent of the rebels. He was Peter Lawrence, but as to the warning I cannot say. All I know is that he took part in the skirmish.
The memories of Toronto's early years. My grandfather drew the first load of lumber by oxen to Thornhill up the then winding trail, which is now called Yonge St., Mr Lawrence continues, I have often heard my father tell of the bears who were won't to come out of the woods and chase him into the the nearest saw mill for you known there were mills practically ever 200 acres, & it was all pine.
Peter Lawrence purchased is property for $8,400, 200 acres of it. His farm & the tannery, the latter situated on the southwest corn of Lawrence Ave, were manned by he & his four sons, Jacob, Peter, Joseph & John. I remember my grandfather telling about a steam which ran close by, where speckled trout were to be caught in abundance. Mr Lawrence anointed. It is just 140 years since he came & blazed the way to his the way to his new home. late on he purchased "Lawrence Castle' from an Englishman who had built it".
And as to the rebellion, family records are rater vague. I do remember, however, that father buried my grandfather's ruffles in the ground. Mr Lawrence remarked & when the rebels searched the house they failed to find them. Then when my Uncle Jacob was returning home with accounts of the rebellion, he was arrested. When I was a boy we sometimes found some of the cannon balls & played with hem. But it all seems so long ago. Sarah C., mentioned in the letter was Sarah Cromer. She was my cousin.
Ref: Toronto Daily Star, published 1929 Jan 26. Please see John Lawrence to read his letter.

Notes: His grandfather, Peter Rezeau Lawrence land in York on 22 Jun 1810. About 140 years (1789) ago would he find Ggrandfather John Lawrence, UE & Peter Rezeau Lawrence were still in New Brunswick.
The identity of Sarah C. is not so certain: Sarah Catherine Lawrence is Peter R Lawrence 's youngest sister. The Cummer's were related with both Lawrence & Willson's, but known Sarah Cummer birth dates do not coincide or were already married. - P J Ahlberg, 2020.

Early History of Darlington
. c 1816 -The early history of Darlington, we find that Mr. John Burk, John W. Trull, & Roger Conat, were the pioneers, & first settlers of this Township. They emigrated together, with their families, from the United States to Canada, in the year 1794, & on the 2 October, they landed from their boats on the beach of Lake Ontario, one mile west of Barber's Creek, now Port Darlington.
The settlers then living on the main road in Darlington, (this does not include persons who lived on the lake shore) were as follows, commencing from the west: Stevens Thos. Powers, Solomon Tyler, David Stevens, John Burk, Squire Fletcher, & John Borland; in the Township of Clark were R. Lovekin, J. P., Avery, Bates, Blair, & Hartwell. There were not settlers north of the main road, in Clarke or Darlington. It was a dense, unbroken forest, inhabited only by Indians & wild animals. … in 1841 there was a blacksmith in Darlington [who?]

. Noah Cotton was born in the county of Suffolk, England. He had been associated with non-conformist churches for many years. They left England along with his wife & most of his children in 1831. The family crossed Lake Simcoe in an open boat, the Orillia Packet, landing at Kempenfeldt when there was one house in Barrie & taking up his residence in Oro Township, at East 1/2 Lot 14, Concession 10. This information was carried in the memories of men & women then still living ... & information gather at a later date.

A TEMPERANCE TOWNSHIP
. About 1868 descendants of the Oro pioneers undertook in turn the work of pioneering in the country adjacent to where the Nottawasaga River enters Georgian Bay. Among those who took part in this movement were the Langmans, Cottons, Andersons, Lockes, Hunters, & Camerons. These, locating in what was then unbroken bush, formed the settlement of which Crossland is now the centre.

"When we located," said Noah Cotton, one of these Flos pioneers, "there was nothing but a lumberman's road to Elmvale, 5 miles away. In the first fall after our arrival we managed to get in 5 acres of fall wheat. Although we suffered nothing like the hardships met with by the first settlers in neighbouring townships that were opened up at an earlier period, we had it hard enough. On my way home from Elmvale with my first grist I had to drive a good part of the way through mud that in many places flowed over the top of the jumper.* The tails of the oxen, standing out straight behind, actually floated over this slimy mass & the bags of flour were coated with mud.
Note3*: Jumper i.e. not a wagon with wheels, but Noah was standing on the flat wooden sledge. - PJA.]

"The first the threshing-machine in the section was owned by a man named Richard Whittaker, & 4 oxen provided the power for operating it. When anyone wanted the machine he had to haul it to his own place. Almost every night, after working in the field all day, John, a neighbour, & his men came over to my place for a stag dance in the evening. With an old violin I furnished music for the others. One night, when John was putting in a few extra touches on the dance, there was a sudden crash & the fancy stepper shot through a hole in the floor into the cellar. He had stepped on a knot that extended almost all the way across one board in the floor & this gave way under his weight. But, bless you, that did not stop the dance. With a yell like an Indian, John jumped out of the cellar & in a moment was at it again, harder than ever.

"No whiskey was ever seen at raising or bee in this section. Twelve years before we came here a temperance lodge had been formed at Colin Gilchrist's home in Oro. My brother, sister, myself, & others joined that lodge, & we brought our principles with us. To that fact is largely due the prosperity of the settlement."

Mrs. Cotton told of the woman's side of it. "I was here 2 weeks before I saw another woman," she said. "My first visitor was Miss Langman, & she had to tramp 2 miles through the bush in order to make the call. She blazed the trail with a draw-knife as she came so as to be sure of finding her way home again. One night while my husband was away, an Indian, who had been hunting all day without success, came in & asked for food & shelter. I was frightened at first, but, after eating, he curled himself up beside the stove & slept quietly until morning.

"One of the most serious dangers to which the early settlers were exposed was bush fires," she continued. "Some years after the work of clearing had been carried on in Flos, bush fires swept over the township. Henry Thurston had the hair burned from his head as the flames swept past him, & my husband, caught in a roadway with a roaring furnace in the bush on each side, threw a blanket over a child in the bottom of the wagon & then raced for life to the open clearings beyond. At least one life was lost, William Kerr being burned to death while fighting off the fires that menaced his buildings.

. 1869 - A general store with a post office was soon opened at the hamlet of Crossland, situated at the corner of con 7 & 15th Sideraod. With the arrival of the railroad in Elmvale, 5 miles distant in 1879, development of the township took off. The first Presbyterian service of worship in the Crossland area was held in 1869 in the one of Mr. & Mrs. Noah Cotton & subsequently twice yearly. The Knowx Burying Ground was & is still, referred as the Cameron Cemetery.

Obituary:
. NOAH COTTON, DIED - On the 27th ult., Mr. Noah Cotton:
The men & women who transformed our wild forests into the abodes of civilization, are melting away as rapidly as snow in the summer sunshine. Mr. Cotton makes the third of those in this vicinity who have passed from earth during the present spring.

He was born in the County of Suffolk & left England along with his wife & most of his children in 1831, crossed Lake Simcoe in an open boat, landing at Kempenfeldt when there was but one house in Barrie, & taking up his residence in Oro Township where he witnessed & took part in the changes of near half a century. Handsome, tall & straight, he maintained his mental & physical powers almost to the last, & till past the allotted 3 score & 10 his appearance was a pattern to our young men, whose less healthy habits & more artificial life will never allow them to see the age attained by him. His death, easy, painless, & without disease, was simply the running down of the machinery.
On the last morning of his life his voice seemed as strong as usual, when he called the family & chided them for lying in bed till 5! He dressed, washed & breakfasted as usual. At dinner he declined to eat, & in the afternoon sat down to rest, & departed this life imperceptibly & without a struggle. Although his children were not very numerous, his descendants would now people a large district of country, & his great grandchildren number between 30 & forty.

Manitouwaning, Oct 20. The crops in this locality have been remarkably good this season. Wheat is turning out from 25 to 40 bushels per acres. some of the farmers who have already threshed will be interesting to your readers: Mr. Herny Vanzant, formerly of Collingwood, had a field of Egyptian wheat which turned out 40 bushels to the acre; there are others too numbs to mention who have obtained from 25 to 30 bushels per acres. There are now 2 threshing machines busily engaged threshing out.

Chinguacousy Twp. ... 1826 hastened the growth of population in the county, but by the end of the troubled thirties the rate of growth had noticeably slowed & in 2 townships Caledon & Toronto - one the most remote & the other with the highest levels of absentee ownership - it had come virtually to a standstill. No census data are available for the years between 1842 - 1852.

. 1912 BIOGRAPHY.2
James Hamilton, the father of Alexander, was born in County Tyrone, near Strabane, Ireland & came to Canada in 1828. Shortly after immigrating he was married to Rebecca Lawrence. In Ireland he had been engaged in linen weaving, but immediately on coming to Canada took up farming & later went into the real estate business. He was successful in both these ventures & might have become a wealthy man if he had not placed too much confidence in his friends & wreaked his own fortune by going security for others. At his death there was nothing left for his wife & family of 7 children, all of whom were under age.

. The 6 adults, including John Hamilton, had a family photo taken circa 1895-1905 in Acton, Ontario. They must all have traveled to the photographer's studio in Acton, Ontario, to be together for this gathering. - P J Ahlberg.
