Obituary: Death of Dr. John Wilson
The many old friends of Dr. John Wilson, in whose memories he had a warm place, were shocked by the intelligence of his sudden death from an attack of bronchial pneumonia last Friday, at the residence of his son, Dr. Wm. Wilson, at St. Joseph, Michigan.
Dr. John Wilson went from Simcoe to Detroit over 25 years ago, where he has since resided. A few days ago, not feeling well, he went on a visit to his son at St. Joseph & while there died very suddenly.
His remains were brought to Simcoe on Sunday morning by his sons William and Douglas, & taken to the residence of his daughter, Mrs. W. Edgett Tisdale, & in the afternoon at 2:30 o'clock were interred in the family plot in Oakwood cemetery, many of his former friends attending the funeral.
The late Dr. Wilson is survived by his widow, 2 sons & 2 daughters. He was born in Simcoe in 1838, received his earlier education in the Simcoe Grammar School, & finally matriculated in Arts in Toronto University. He then attended McGill College, Montreal, & subsequently completed his studies in London, England, obtaining the diploma of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He returned to Simcoe in 1859 and resided here until his removal to Detroit. By his courteous manner & enterprise for the benefit of the town he became very popular, & for several years was elected to the Town Council, & for a number of terms was Warden of Norfolk. He was the first Mayor of the town of Simcoe at its incorporation in 1878. He was a Past Master of Norfolk Lodge, No. 10. A. F. & A. M., and a Past Principal of Ezra Chapter, No. 23, R.A.M. He was also a member of Lynn Lodge, No. 28, A.O.U.W. - - -

3409 . 1903 Jul 24 - Man Killed By Lightning
the thunder storms that have passed over this section lately have been unusually severe, & it is our painful duty to record the death of Mr. Arhtur Willson by lightning on Monday afternoon.
Deceased was plowing in the field when storm came on. He evidently intended to finish his furrow before seeking shelter but the summons that knows no waiting called him to the bar of God without a moment's warning. Apparently the electric current went in at one side of his head came out the other, for the straw hat that he was wearing had a hole the size of a walnut over each ear & cut out as clean as if done by a bullet. The plow handle, which he held in his left hand was shattered & piece was broken off. The horse he was driving were knocked over & stunned. The hired man, Mr. Wm. Hughes, was plowing in the same field about 15 rods away. He also was partially stunned but looked around he saw Mr. Willson fall & the horses scrambling on the ground.Taking his jackknife he cut the harness so that the horses could get up without injuring each other & spoke to deceased but got no reply. He had been killed instantly. Hughes then went to Mr. Joshua Willson's house, which was nearest for assistance. A doctor was sent for & the terrible news spread like wildfire.
Deceased was a son of Mr. Joshua Willson on the 4th Con. Whitchurch & was in every way an honorable industrious & praiseworthy young man.
About 5 or 8 years ago he married a daughter of Mr. Ben Eves of Queen St., East Gwillimbury & sister of Walter Eves, the hog buyer & their matrimonial relations were exceeding happy. The parting is very sad under such exceptional circumstances & we joint the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved families.
The eldest brother, Mr. Albert Willson, came home from Belmont, Mass., to attend the funeral & comfort his aged & heart stricken parents.
The funeral Wednesday was one of the largest ever seen in the Whitchurch Tp. The remains were interred at Pine Orchard. the locality seems to be dangerous in respect to lightning for 2 years ago 2 cows were killed by electric current in the field adjoining. It is singular coincidence that deceased's brother, Mr. Edgar Willson, was stunned by lightning while working on his farm in Dakota about 3 weeks ago, but is recovering. - - -

3412 . 1905 Aug 1 - MAD DOG SCARE. THREE PERSONS BITEN AT CORSICANA DURING THE EXCITEMENT:
Two supposed mad dogs were killed yesterday. One of them bit W H Sitton & his 2 sons before being killed. It also bit several dogs. Mr. Sitton & his 2 sons went to a mudstone 14 miles from here & the stone adhered to each of the wounds for more than an hour.
Ref: Houston Chronicle Newspaper.

Note: Madstone: This home remedy was used for centuries to heal. A mad stone (sometimes called a ‘bezoar stone’) is used to draw poison out of bites & wounds. It works by absorbing the poison bit by bit, curing the bites by detoxifying them completely.
. Mad stones can be found in the stomach or intestines of cud-chewing animals.
. Depending on the animal, the stone may be more potent & valuable; for example, the stone of a brown deer is said to be inferior to that of a white deer.
. . Mad stones are not to be bought or sold; such interaction may negate their healing powers.

. Memorial David McCutcheon
We little thought, when leaving home, He would no more return,
That in death so soon would sleep, & leave us here to mourn.
We do not know the pain he bore, We did not see him die.
We only know he passed away, Without a last goodbye.

. 2011 Jul 16 - I have a little story about this Monument. John &Jessie are my great grandparents. On a genealogy trip about 15 years ago (maybe 20) I went to the cemetery to take pictures of their graves. When I found it Jessie's name was not listed on the stone. I called my grandma, Lorna Prior Newans, & she said that she was living in London at the time of Jessie's death & they took her casket on the train to be buried next to John. She was told that the funeral home would take care of the engraving of Jessie's name on the stone. I told her that it had not been done, so one of grandma's cousins, Leta Henderson who lived nearby, took care of having it engraved. I am thankful I was able to take that trip & discover the omission of her name. Susan Parris Johnson.
