A pretty autumn wedding took place on Sat. afternoon at the home of Mr Mrs R L Johnston, first line, Esquesing, when their only daughter, Edna Maude, became the bride of Melbourne C Overholt, son of Mr Mrs J E Overhold, of Brantford, the bride entered the drawing room on the arm of her father, to the strains of Lohegrins wedding march played by Miss Hattie Overhold, sister of the groom. The bride liked lovely in her wedding gown of white satin canton, trimmed with seed pearls & wore a bandeau & necklace of pearls, also the groom's gift, a white gold wristwatch & carried a shower bouquet of American Bounty roses & lily of the valley. Little Doris Blow, niece of the good, made a pretty flower girl. She was dressed in white milk crepe de chine, trimmed with pin rosed & sliver ribbon & carried a basket of pink baby mums. The room's gift to his sister was a lovely compact & to his nice a gold signet ring. The ceremony was conducted by Rev R E Zimmerman, Acton United Church. Following the ceremony a dainty buffet lunch as served in the dining room, after which the bridal couple left for a trip to Toronto, Niagara Falls & other points. The bride travelled in a row of satin faced crepe & cut velvet & rosewood coat, trimmed with mandell fur [i.e. brown mink], with hat to match. On their return Mr Mrs Overholt will reside in their new home on Wilbert St. Acton. Funds are raised by parties, booths, canvass & donations, amounting to $949.47 expenditures which included boxes for local boys overseas. She failed to rally & passed away at her home on Sunday morning. Born at Acton, Edna M Johnston was a daughter of Mr & Mrs R L Johnston. She spent her girlhood days here & attended Acton & Guelph Schools. 26 years ago she married Melbourne C Overhold & for the past 23 years they have resided in Toronto. Besides her husband, she leaves 1 daughter, Merle, at home; & parents Mr & Mrs R L Johnson, 2 brothers L Orwell & W Roy reside here. To those who have lost a loving wife & mother & a brilliant daughter & sister, the sympathy of many friends goes at this time. Mrs. Overholt was a woman who never seemed to weary of dong good work. Besides her busy home life she was a member of the Canadian Club, T Eaton Forum, Humberside Home & School club, Toronto Home at School Council & Vice-President & director of Clarke Bros machine C Ltd. of which her husband is president. Her church membership was with the Runnymede United Church & she was a member of the branch of neighborhood workers Association, VP of Woman's Assoc. & also belong to the Amicus Club of Howard Park United Church. Evidence of the friendships she had won by he bright cherry life & her willingness to help good works was seen in a wealth of floral tributes & in the many friends who called & attended the services at York Bros Funeral Home, Toronto & the Victor B Rumley Funeral Home in Acton. Rev E W Jewitt conducted the service in Toronto & assisted Rev E A Currey in the service in Acton. Pallbearers were Messrs. Jack & Kenneth Blow, Ernest & Clarence Wide & Melvin & Orland Harris. Mr. Withey had an attack of influenza but was seemingly well over it when he took a reverse & pneumonia set in causing his death. He was born in Los Gatos 31 years ago & practices passed his life in this valley. He received his education in the Lo Gatos & San Jose schools & was married 10 years ago to Miss Ada Behrens? of this city. He leaves to mourn his early death, his widow & 2 children, Hadassdah named for his mother & George Jr, also his father John G Withes of Los Gotos, 2 brothers H J Withey of Modersto & Robert Withey of Los Gatos & a sister Mrs. L E Sheffield of San Jose. Pioneer Called By Death, Mrs. Catherine Gray of UEL Stock Dies at Lansing One of the oldest of the pioneer residents of York to passed away at Lansing on Friday Dec 10, in the person of Mrs. Catherine Gray, relict of the late Robert Gray of York Mills. Of U.E. Loyalist stock, a daughter of the late John C Van Notsrand, whose grandfather left Long Island, NY, in 1800 & settled at York Mills & of his wife Mary, whose father, Joseph Shepard, was reputed to be one of the first white men to attempt to carve out a home in the wilderness a few miles north of what was destined to become Little York, the deceased spent the whole of her lifetime of nearly 89 years in that neighborhood. In addition to recollections of the traditions of the early settlers, of the days when her mother's father, as a winter recreation, would don his snow shoes & purse a deer until the animal, exhausted by its flight through the deep snow, became an easy victim of his hunting knife, she was well informed on all the topics of the day & took a deep interest in the details of the great world war & its sequel. The late Mrs Monkman was born in Kng Twp. 79 years ago, moving to Eramosa two. to a fam after she had reached the age of 50. The family lived on the farm for 25 years, when they retired taking up their residence in Guelph 4 years. She is survived by 5 days: Mrs Elizabeth Scott, Eramosa, nancy, Minnie, Albert & Adelaide at home & one sone George of Eramosa. Survived her also is one brother, John Jordan of Trafalgar. Mrs Monkmanis an aunt of Miss Gladys Filker of town. . 1923 Jan 3, Guelph, Late William J Monkman, passed away at his residence 44, Tiffany St., Guelph, On Wed., Jan 3, W J Monkman, after many years of suffering, but who, wrought all his sickness & pain, was very patient, always wearing a small & posses a bright & cheerful disposition. He took to his bed on Sat. Dec 23, with what was thought to be only a slight cold but on Christmas Day it was pronounced pneumonia & after 12 days illness he succumbed to the disease. Up to 3 years ago, Mr Monkman lived on his farm in Eramosa, which he sold & came to reside in Guelph, where he lived up to the time of his death. For 25 years she had a pair of red front row seats, in the first row of the Maple Leaf Gardens. That was back when you could reach out a touch the hockey players. Later they put in glass walls near the goalie poles. Marie owned a riding horse which was stabled on the Richview Sideroad. After her father deceased, she had to quit school to support mother & brothers. Marie was one of the first women to have her own car & was a world traveler. One time she took a trip to Montreal with a couple of girlfriends in the backseat. When they came to a very high metal bridge, Marie grip the steering wheel tight an d press on. On the other side of the Montreal bridge she turn round to see why her friends were so quiet & she found them cowering on the floor with the hands over their hands! She also visited Lucerne, Ireland & other destinations in Europe, Hawaii & many US cities. Marie liked to drive a good car & sip on glass of premium Canadian Club whisky. Spinster. She owned a riding horse, boarded him on Richview Side Rd. Original founding member of Weston Gulf & Country Club. One thing I recall Aunt Marie saying was, 'It's not how much money you earn. On Main St. & the corner of Scotch St. they notice the two story red brick house was for sell. Marie knocked on the door & said her Aunt Ruby had been born in the house. Could they have a little look look inside? The lady with white hair asked Marie to remove her sunglasses. Yes you have the Walker's dark brown eyes, come in. Ruby said the sparse front parlor on the right looked just the same. Over there by the wood stove was were they put the chamber pot, which always froze overnight in the winter. Wit h Canada's wartime economy in full stride at the time of Braden's takeover at CCM, goods were once again pour from Canada's factories. CCM's production of bicycles for 1940 was as high as it had ever been & could have been higher. Braden cautioned Canadians waiting for bicycles not to get overly excited. We have applied the money to various projects & we are having the city plant a tree in her memory. There will be plaque with her name & that she was a member of our club. S.I. XX contacted the President last fall about the possibility of us assisting girls in Kisumu Kenya to go to school. XX is a development worker who travels widely & has made friends with some Soroptimist' s in Kisumu, Kenya. While visiting the re, she heard that a local family had had to sell their cow in order to pay school fees for their daughter. 3484 | . 1932 Aug 18, Eramosa Barn Destroyed Fie Occurs During Threshing Operations & Building, Machine & Stock are Destroyed On Saturday afternoon the barn on the farm of Lloyd Johnston at Lot 7, 7th line, Eramosa Township, was completely destroyed by fire. Threshing operations were being carried on at the time, but just what was the cause of the fire is not known. Mr Johnston & the hired manger the only 2 in the building & were in charge of the separator. The first warning was noticed by Lloyd Johnston, who was on top of the separator when a burst of flame seemed to envelope the machine& all around the lower part. He had just sufficient time to frighten the team from the building & warn his helper & escape himself before being trapped. In a few moments the entire barn was a mass of flames & although neighbors soon gathered to render assistance, the L-shaped structure was soon a seething mass of flames & nothing could be saved. The barn & pig pen & driving shed attached, along with crop of hay, wheat & barley & 15 pigs & the separator & some implements, were a total loss. St. Luke's Anglican Church, Rosemont, was the scene of a pretty June wedding on Sat. when Mary Louis, eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs. Enos Brett, became the bride of Clayton E S Barbour, only son of Mr & Mrs Humphrey Barbour, Erin, Rev G S Gray officiated. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a lovely gown of white chiffon & lace made of long fitted lines, her veil of bridal tulle was caught with orange blossoms, & she carried Butterfly roses & lily of the valley. Miss Clarice McKenzie of Thornton, was bridesmaid, wearing a becoming frock of shell pin organdy, flowered with deeper shade of rose, with hat to match & G0 carried Ophelia roses. Mr Jack Abbott of Erin acted as groomsman, & the ushers were Mr Douglas Campbell, cousin of the groom, & Mr Harold Brett, brother of the bride. The wedding music was played by Mrs. Rev G L Gay. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, when Mrs. Brett received, wearing a frock of printed georgette, with a hat to match, & a corsage of Sunset roses. Mrs. H Barbour, mother of the groom, were a gown of black lace & chiffon, with a small black hat. About 80 guests sat down to a wedding supper, which was served on the lawn. Later Mr & Mrs. Barbour left on a motor trip through Northern Ontario. For traveling, the bride were a suit of Persian green & white, with matching accessories in white. Mrs. Burrows was born Sept. 14, 1926, in San Diego, Calif., to Byron & Gertrude Redmond McCain. During her childhood years, her father worked as a construction engineer, & as a result, her family lived in numerous locations in California & Arizona. She spent many summers in Jackson Hole, Wyo., with her grandparents & other relatives who had been pioneers in the area. Mrs. Burrows was graduated from South Pasadena, Calif., High School in 1944. She subsequently attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif., & Occidental College in Los Angeles before transferring to the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from UW in 1948. While at UW, she met Laramie native Lee Burrows. They were married at Moose, Wyo., on Sept. 8, 1948. In subsequent years, she continued to work part-time, most recently at Insty Prints in University Square shopping center. Mrs. Burrows was an avid reader with a particular interest in history. She was very skilled as a genealogist & compiled a great deal of information about her family tree. She volunteered regularly at the Family History Center at the LDS church, & she was a member of Gallatin County Historical Center & the Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society. Mrs. Burrows also enjoyed domestic & international travel, & she participated in numerous Elderhostel programs. Mrs. Burrows was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Joan McCain Nelson; & her granddaughter, Emily Schofield. Her family & friends will gather to remember her & celebrate her life at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Bozeman Holiday Inn. Her ashes will be interred at Aspen Hill Cemetery in Jackson, Wyo.
