4360 | 1883 Dec 12, Wednesday: Logging Accidents A resident of Cadillac reports in Big Rapids the following terrible accident at Cadillac Monday afternoon [i.e. 10th December, 1883]: Elmer Cummer, a brother of the senior member of the Cummer Lumber Company, was with the engineer, James Thomas, running a train of logs on the company's road. The train had neared the Harrison settlement, & Cummer, who seems to have had charge of the engine for the moment, was running at a reckless rate, when the engine jumped the track and the loaded cards piled in a heap over the engine and occupants. As soon as possible the men were rescued. Cummer was found seriously injured and it was thought he could not survive. Harris was mangled terribly and died soon after being removed. The fireman is said to have escaped by jumping from the train, as he feared an accident from the reckless running. Harris had been in the employ of the company some 12 years. Out of respect the company have closed their three mills till after the funeral. While working among the logs at Chippewa lake, Sat. a man named Cota had both hips crushed, & otherwise seriously injured. Elmer Cummer, aged 26 years, son of Jacob Cummer, an extensive lumberman, while riding an engine on his father's logging railway yesterday morning [i.e. the 13th Feb.], got his clothes caught in the gearing & was drawn into the engine and mxxy mangled. He dies instantly. Ref: Muskegon Chronicle Newspaper. 1888, Feb 15 - Elmer C Cummer, the 20 year old brother of W E CUMMER, of Cadillac, well known in lumbering circles, jumped from a geared locomotive that was in motion on the Cumberland Lumber Company's logging road Tuesday. Mr. Cummer's clothing was caught & he was drawn in. After considerable delay his mangled body was recovered and taken home, where he died in a short time. Deceased was married last fall. Railroad victim of Wednesday was a member of a Cleveland firm. The Frank D Cummer who was killed by a train at the Evans Street crossing of the C.H. & D, late Wednesday, is senior member of the Cleveland, Ohio firm of F D Cummer & Son Mfg. Co. machinists. W M Cummer, his son testified before Coroner Haerr Thursday and took the remains home for burial. The fatality was accidental. Ref: Cincinnati Post. . 1898 May 6, Fri. - Franklin D Cummer Killed at Cincinnati, was absorbed in thought and walked on the track ahead of the engine. A worldwide reputation. He possessed it as a successful inventor. One of his sons goes to Columbus to return with the mortal remains of his father - The funeral to be held Saturday.: Mr Franklin D Cummer, president of the F D Cummer & Son Co. of this city and one of the prominent inventors and machinery manufacturers of Ohio was killed at Cincinnati, Wed. afternoon, being struck by a railroad train. Mr. Cummer's son William, who was associated with him in business, went to Cincinnati late We. night to bring the boy of this father to Cleveland for burial. The remains will probably arrive in the city this morning. ABSORBED IN THOUGHT the safety gates which guard the crossing were down, blocking passage for teams across the tracks. The gates, however, do not cover the sidewalk. "The railroad watchman says he noticed Cummer and called out to him to stop, and when he failed to answer, ran toward him, but it was too late. Cummer had stepped on the rails just in front of the Glendale accommodation. He was struck and hurled high in the air. He died in the patrol wagon on the way to the Betts Street Hospital. The body was taken to the morgue. The track is straight from some distance both ways from the crossing." Mr. Cummer was recognized throughout the US & Europe as an authority on the science of mechanically evaporating refuse and garbage. Ten years ago he invented a system known as the "Cummer dryer, which is used in a number of the large cities of the world. In the capacity of expert engineer, Mr. Cummer traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Australia. For several years he has spend his summers in Russia, where he sold a great deal of machinery. Eighteen years ago Mr. Cummer came to Cleveland and organized a company to manufacture an engine which he had invented. Since then he has made a number of inventions, which his company manufactured. He was 55 years old, born in Canada & live practically all his life in the US. Besides a wife, Cummer leaves 3 sons: William, Albert & Frederick, who were associated with him in business & 2 daughters. Albert, the second son is in Paris, but is expected to arrive home in 2 weeks. Mary Isabella is the daughter of George Magee and Mary Jane Burgess. Mary Isabella's mother died when she was 6 years old and she lived with the Moore's. Her sister Margaret Elizabeth Magee went to live with her aunt Margaret Burgess McDonald in North East, Pa. "Maggie" Magee is buried in the North East Cemetery in the McDonald plot. The original spelling is Mac!!! =============================================== Obituary June 19, 1930 Mae I. Emerson Mrs. Mae I. Emerson (nee Magee), 59, died in her home at Ridgeway Sunday, after several hours illness. She was born in Brantford, Ont., and at the age of four years was adopted by her aunt Mrs. James Moore of Ridgeway, with whom she lived until her marriage to Harry Emerson, Ridgeway merchant, who died about fourteen months ago. She was organist in Memorial United Church for several years, also of All Saints Anglican church, of which she was a member. She was a member of Carillon chaper O.E.S., and Queen Victoria Rebekah lodge. Surviving are two sisters, Miss Margret Magee, North East, Pa., and Mrs. Charlotte Pickard, Ridgeway; three brothers, Rev. W. D. Magee, St. Catharines, Charles and George Magee, Buffalo. A brother and sister predeceased her. The funeral service was conducted at her late residence, Dominion Street at 2 p.m., Wednesday, standard time, by Rev. Wm. He & Elizabeth put down roots on their farm in Adjala & remained there until their deaths. 2 of his 9 children (Agnes & Elizabeth- the oldest & the youngest) migrated west to a homestead outside Edmonton, Alberta. The death of John McCutcheon of Alliston removed one of Adjala's oldest settlers. Deceased is survived by 2 daughters who reside in the west & 3 sons, Robert of Mono Centre, James of Manitoulin Island; &William of Alliston. The remains were buried in Thompson's Cemetery.
