4420 | 1913 Jan 2, Lynn, Wm Teetzel who purchased the old downhill building, is building a new house on his 40 acres farm on Sec. 9. . 1921 Feb 10 - FARM HOME BURNS. Fire at 6 o'clock Monday morning destroyed the farm home of Wm. Teazel located 6.5 miles north of Capac. The fire had gotten such a start that when Mr. Teetzel awoke he had barely time to rescue his 4 children, most of them in scanty attire. The mother had gone away the evening before to take care of a married daughter, who was ill. Immediately the near farm neighbors got busy & fed & clothed the family. Thomas Ridley & Henry Quillman circulated a paper in Capac & in the locality of the fire & raised about $200 to help the family repair their losses. This would certainly be a fine chance for the local Red Cross to administer relief in the way of clothing or other necessary supplies. Any family in the community would be right up against it if their home should burn with all the clothing, bedding, furniture & supplies. 4425 | 1917 Jun 4, Mon. - Eastern High School Junior Shoots Man Entering His Home. Charles Nolan, 16 Years of Age, Comes Down Stairs to Get Drink of Water, Detects Burglar, Who Grabs Him. VICTIM DIES IN A LOCAL HOSPITAL. Believe to be Allen McCutcheon, who came her last Wednesday; May live at Winnipeg, Manitoba. A man believe to be Allen McCutcheon off Winnipeg, Manitoba was show in the head & died at the Bay City hospital shortly after being removed to there, at about 1o'clock this Monday morning. The shooting took place in the dining room of the residence of Mrs. Lillie Nolan, 1133 Wilson St. at 12:45 o'clock this Monday morning. Mrs. Nolan is a widow & keeps house for her brother, Charles J Winterhalter & her son Charles, a junior in Eastern high school, treasurer of the junior class. Young Charles did the shooting with a 32 cabler revolver. The man was in the dining room of the Nolan home, having lifted a rear window & fell in his tracks over a low radiator under the window, he head falling on the floor where there remains a large clog of blood. Officers Quick To the Scene. Chief Davis, Detectives Murphy & Gleason & other officers were quick to answer the call to the Nolan home & they spend the greater portion of the morning investigating ehe case. They required young Nolan to accompany them to the station after the shooting, but later released him when learning the full particulars of the case. The Boys Story. Detected Man When Going For a Drink & was Grappled. Young Nolan, to the officers who investigated the shooting, too the following story: I had gone to bed & had been asleep only a short while when I woke up & when down to the kitchen to goat drink of water. While I was there I heard a noise out of doors.], when some boxes where struck together. I peered out the kitchen window & saw a man standing outside. I thought a first that he was going to steal my uncle's automobile, so I ran upstairs, pulled on my trousers & got the revolver. I crept quietly back to the kitchen, I again looked out, but could not see the man, so I stepped into the dining room & went to a rear window where I pulled the shade back to see if I could see anything of him from there. To my great surprise I found the man half way through the window & he jumped up & grabbed me.Then I shot & he fell. He did not say anything during our tussle & groaned a little when he fell. I then called my uncle who was asleep & he notified Ballard's store & the Bay City hospital ambulance was sent for. Had His Shoes Off. McCutcheon, as the police believe the man to be, had no shoes on when he picked up in the Nolan home. He was also bareheaded & in his shirt sleeve. His had, a black felt hat 67.2 size & a brown coat were found on the back porch, but a search of the yard & the surrounding territory failed to find any trace of the shoes. However, about 10 o'clock, McCutcheon's shoes were found by Erwin Streeter in a pile of lumber in the alley back of the Nolan home, 3 doors to the north. They were not hidden but are where they could be easily picked up as McCutcheon let the house & went North. Coroner Notified. After McCutcheon died at the Bay City hospital, Corner Kelly was notified. He directed that the body betaken to Erwell's morgue where it not is. McCutcheon is a may 23 to 35 years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches in height & weights about 175 pounds. His hands were calloused, showing that he had been engaged in heavy work & his arms were muscular. There was a few days growth of whiskers & no mustache. His nose is long & angular. He wore a dark pair of trousers with a grayish strikethrough them, a blue short & white woolen undershirt. The bullet entered the left side of the head about 2 inches about the ear & seems to have taken a slightly downward course. Nolan a Slight Boy. Thought young Nolan had the grit to attack the intruder whom he believed to be a burglar, who he believed to be a burglar, he is a mere stripling, tall & straight, but weighting only 107 pounds. He would have been no match to McCutcheon. Nolan was born in the house where he lives. His father has been dead for 7 or 8 years. He is a junior in Eastern High school & treasurer of the class. He kept the class money in his home & his mother & uncle both had sums of money in the house. Nolan has a rallied complexion with slight color in the cheeks, dark eyes & heavy black eyelashes & eyebrows. He seemed quite unconcerned doubt the shooting, believing that if he had not shot that the would have been worsted by the burglar. Came Here Last Wednesday, In the pocket of the coat was found a canceled traveling slip issued by the Michigan Railway company which shows that the bearer came from Saginaw to Bay City on May 30, last Wednesday. There was also a notebook with printed leaves showing how to mix various kinds of drinks. On the blank pages the owner had kept his working time at different places. It showed that he worked in Hamtramck, at Eloise on the Cedar dock from the 16 May to 4 July, & then went switching in Eloise until October 13. This is presumed to have been last year. Another notation says he then came over to Brandon on November 7. Brandon is in Oakland county. In the notebook the owner has jotted down the name of Roy Erwin, Co. F, 33rd Michigan, Fort Wayne, Detroit, Mich. There is also given the address of the Star Employment office, Cadillac, 1065, 7 & 9 W. Montcalm St. He also worked at 195 Territorial St. Benton Harbor. A Letter From Mother. A later which seems to have come from his mother was found. The postscript says: Oh, I forgot to tell you I got a Xmas present from Minnie & Lizzie, a very nice silk necks cart, a Xmas card from Oscar & Eva. Vas. & Harold gave me a $1.25 box of writing paper & envelopes. Calla did not as much as send a Xmas card. It is surprising how ungrateful some can be. No more at this time. From your mother. Coroner Kelly Makes Identification. From a paper that Coroner Kelly found on the body the dead man he decided that his name was Allen McCutcheon. Bearing this out was a line label inside a coat picket in which was printed the worlds Tip Top Tailors [i.e. made in Toronto, Ont.] & than on a blank space was written Mr. A McCutcheon, September 6. Support this identification were other papers. There was a receipt for $5 given to A J McCutcheon, Sept 28, 1916. A pawn ticket no. 201 to A. McCutcheon for one 18 size silver watch, issued by Frank's loan office, River Rouge, Feb. 1, 1917, was also found. Also the stub of a pawn ticket No. 625. There was also a receipt for $5 made out to Minard McCutcheon by Drs. Smith & Hoode of Duluth, June 17, 1916. There was a Pullman ticket for an upper berth on a tourist sleeper, Winnipeg to Sudbury, Nov. 16. 1916. Another paper which gave the name & address of Celia McCutcheon, 228 Garry St., Winnipeg was found. She is supposed to be a sister or wife of the dead man. She is referred to in the letter from Mother. The following address also found, 1902 Missouri, Billings Park, Charles Rockwell. McCutcheon had $1.01 in his possession. Mother is Very Excitable. The shooting seems total heavily upon the widowed mother. She recently underwent an operation is very nervous. She deplores the shooting & wishes that the man had been allowed to rob the house. Friends endeavored to calm her by saying that her son was perfectly justified in shooting the man; that if the burglar & been permitted to enter the home & ransack the house he might have killed some of the inmates, if discovered. - . - Ref: Bay Times Newspaper, Bay City, Michigan. 1917 Jun 5, Tues. BROTHER TO CLAIM BODY OF DEAD MAN. Chief Davis Locates Relatives of Allen McCutcheon Shot Monday Morning. Chief of Police Davis has succeeded in locating the relatives of Allen McCutcheon, who was host early Monday morning by Charles Nolan, 16 years old, while entering the home of the latter through widow. A telegram was sent to the chief of police at Superior, Wis. & in this way the chief here got into communication with a brother of the victim, S. McCutcheon, who is said by Charles J Vance, a roommate of the dead man to be an alderman in the city where he lives. Dances, late yesterday afternoon went to the police station after reading an account of the tragedy in the Times Tribune & then proceeded to the undertaking rooms of Geo. N Ewell, where he identified the dead man as his died & companion. Both came here only a few days ago & obtained employment at E B Foss & Co.'s lumber yard. Vance said the last time he saw McCutcheon was early in the evening on Sunday night. At that time he was in a normal condition & he could not account for what subsequently took place. He further stated the McCutcheon's aged parents reside at Canfield, Manitoulin Island, Canada & that he family is highly respected. This morning the chief of police received a telegram from S. McCutcheon, the victim's brother, requesting that the body be embalmed & that the would arrive in the city Wednesday night to take charge of it. Whether the burial will take place here, or the body taken to Canada is not known. 1917 Jun 7, Thus. R. McCutcheon, of Superior, Wis. arrived in Bay City last night to take charge of his brother, Allen McCutcheon, who was shot by Chas. Nolan, early Monday morning. The identification of the remains was complete. Mr. McCutcheon stated to the authorities that his relative was not a criminal, never having been in any kind of trouble before. He left with the remains at 10:55 today for Sandfield, Manitoulin Island, Canada, were the parents reside. 1917 June 8, Friday, Slaying of Allen McCutcheon was justifiable, coroner's Jury decides that has. Nolan acted in self-defense. …James Vance, companion of the dead man, who said he had known McCutcheon practically all his life, tested that he & McCutcheon came to Bay City together. They obtained a room & were dissatisfied with it & hunted up other quarters. On the night of the trouble the 2 parted about 8:30. Vance saying he went to the Salvation Army. McCutcheon was to meet him there. The latter did not show up. The witness could not account for what took place, declaring the his chum belonged to a good family & always behaved himself, never having gotten into serious trouble before. Other unimportant witnesses were called & then jury returned the follow verdict: That Allen McCutcheon came to his death by a gun shot while entering the home of Chas. Winterhalter in the night time through a window, the shot being fired by Chas. Nolan in an act of self-defense, ming it in our opinion a justifiable act, Ref: Bay City Times, Michigan. - . - 1917 - Manitoulin Man Shot in Michigan: Victim of Shooting at Bay City is said to be Allen McCutcheon. (Special Dispatch to the Globe). Bay City, Michigan. June 4. Police tonight, it is said, definitely identified the man fatally shot today in the home of Charles J. Winterhalter, on the west side of the city. They claim he is Allen McCutcheon, 35 years old, & a resident of Manitoulin Island, Ontario. The shooting occurred when McCutcheon tried, it is said, to force an entrance into the Winterhalter home through a window. Charles Nolan, a 16 year old nephew of the Winterhalters, heard the noise, & taking McCutcheon for a burglar, fired the shot which caused his death. Charles Vance, a close friend of McCutcheon, says they came to Bay City from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, a few weeks ago, & he is confident McCutcheon was killed by mistake. The police theory is that the man attempted to make his way into the house, believing it to be his boarding place. Ref: Globe Newspaper, Toronto, Ontario. Transcripts by P J Ahlberg. Many men go throughout life attending quietly & faithfully to business doing useful work in the community & known favorably to a large number of citizens, yet seldom coming before the public in a conspicuous way. John W Claypool was one of these men belong to the well-known clay pool family of Indiana, of whom his father, the late Solomon Claypool, was a distinguished member, he inherited many of their sturdy traits, together with an inclination to the law. He was engaged in the practice of this profession in Indianapolis many years & stood high in the estimation of his legal brethren's & those whom he professionally served as able, dependable & trustworthy both as citizen & lawyer. He became best known to the public, perhaps as attorney for Geo. Rhodius, who will remembered by older citizens as the owner of valuable property on Monument circle, against which various false claims were made. Mr. Calypool's wise handling of the estate met with much approval at the time & he mad credited with the suggestion that led to Rhodius' gift in the city of $250,000 & several bequests to charity. Mr. Claypool was a good citizen - a term that covers many virtues. - - - | CLAYPOOL, John Wilson (I1044)
