Notes |
- Mary is the daughter of Mary Ellen Catchpole & Richard Patterson.
Note1: Mary Patterson's year of birth changes with every census. She gives her age as 22 on marriage, making her born 1850. The 1851-2 Census gives Mary's DOB 1848. Her tombstone in Parklawn Cemetery, 2845 Bloor St W Etobicoke, gives her DOB as December 28, 1848 & is confirmed in Richard Patterson's Bible. The children are listed on this stone.
US CIVIL WAR:
. 1856 Jun 14 - Houston, Missouri, Father Richard Patterson resided here. Although Mary Patterson was clearly born in Ontario, her family referred to her as an American. This would indicate she had lived in Missouri with her father & siblings.
Granddaughter Marie Felker recalled that Mary Patterson said the reason the family moved up north to Canada was because of the coming civil war which was from 1861-65. In some towns in the southern States, you would be run out if your favoured President Lincoln. Mary was 7 years old in 1856 in Missouri. Mary would only have been 13y at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 & Catchpole grandparents are already dead. Notwithstanding Mary Patterson was married Jan 1, 1872 to John Felker in Belwood, Ontario.
The farm on Garafraxa was pretty far from anywhere, except for the Methodist log cabin which was a short walk away. Douglas, as Belwood was formerly known, was known for its cattle which they would ship by train to Toronto. - PJA
