- First Wife of Arthur Nicholson.
. Affidavit, Robert Payne, aged 80 years, late of Kings 17th Reg. Light Dragoons makekth oath the late Adj. Arth. Nicholson did on or about the year 1778 introduce to this deponent, a lady (whom he had personally known some time before) as his wife, her maiden name was Eleanor Henry. They lived together as man & wife from that time till her death in 1784. They had offspring a son, long since dead & a daughter born about 1780, named Jane, a lady well known to this despondent who at this time is about making an application with her sisters & brothers by a subsequent marriage, for an allowance from the Companionate Fund. . 1822 Jul 30 - I Andrew Phair, Assistant Barrack Master General, NB do certify I was well acquainted with Adj. Arthur Nicholson, lately deceased. About the close of the year 1778 Arthur Nicholson introduced a Lady to the officers of his Regiment & all other persons of his acquaintance - as his wife - who was taken acknowledged & reputed to be the former wife of the said Arth. Nichoson, was was never doubted by anyone. I verily believe the wife to be the mother of Jane Nicholson, the daughter of Arthur Nicholson now applying for an allowance. Signed, A. Phair. Affidavit: Arthur Nicholson, b. Feb 1746 Co. Leitrium, Irland, married to Eleanor Henry Southampton, Long island Province of New York, 17 Mar 1779. Issue, Jane Nicholson, born 29 Aug 1780, at Hampstead, Long Island & Wm. Henry Nicholson, b 12 Apr 1784 at Maugerville, Prov. of NB.
