      NOTE 4./ Historical Reference: 1816

The summer of 1816 begins with what historians refer to as the "year without a summer" The era known as the "Little Ice Age occurred between 1300 and 1850 AD. A volcano 1000 times the size od Mount St Helena in modern times, erupted in 1815 causing much of the rest of the world to experience what is referred to as the year without a summer. Ice was on the rivers in July in Europe and America. The colder weather impacted agriculture, health, economics, social strife, emigration, and even art and literature. Increased glaciation and storms also had a devastating affect on those that lived near glaciers and the sea. It was not until about 1850 that the full effect of this volcanic explosion and the little Ice age came to an end.
