Obituary, Charles Overland
A highly respected citizen of Erin village passed peacefully away at this residence onion. Jun 25h, in there person of Charles Overland, in his 89th year. The eldest, son of the late Charles Overland & Mary Matthews, he was born in Upwell, England, & came to Canada with his parents when 12 years, when the family settled at Brampton, Ontario; 2 years later they moved to Erin where deceased spend his life & for 46 years conducted a funeral service, furniture & general store, retiring in 1911.
He was twice married: his first wife Annie Hunter, predeceased him 55 years ago.
On July 18, 1883 he united in marraige to Jessie Kirkwood, who survives him; & on July 18, 1933, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
He is survived by 2 sons: R J of Timmins, C K of Erin, 2 dau: Mrs Jesse Walker, Erin; Miss Queenie of Galt; 2 brothers: Luther & Matthews of Erin; 2 sisters, Margaret of Erin & Mary (Mrs H B Pearcy) of Toronto;
He was a member of Burns Presbyterian Church & during his active business life, served the village as councillor & for 19 years as Reeve, as well as several years on the school board.He took a nee interest in the business & social life of the village & his passing leaves but a vey few of the original business men of the boom days of Erin.
On Nov 22, 1926, he was presented with he Veterans Gold Medal by Grand lodge to all Past Masters over 70 years of age. W Bro. Oveland had been a member of Wellington lodge, AF&AM, #271, for 52 years at the time, having joined the Lodge in 1876, 6 years after it was organized. A Funeral took place from his residence on Wed. afternoon. Honourary pallbearers: RD Nodwell, TR Akins, AG Parry, JGSharp, James Justice & RO Harris. Pallbears: HC Lyons, TC Foster, Dr J M Abott, NA Dearing, George Kirkwood, GT Scott, all brother masons. The many beautiful floral tributes bespoke of the high esteem in which deceased was held as did the large number of relatives, neighbors & friends, who assembled to pay their last respects to a beloved citizen.
