Bainbridge boys are brought up with a knowledge of how to use the axe as well as the pen. Sometimes they make a miscue both in spelling and splitting. William Schaus' 10 year old boy had one of his hands badly cut while tackling a rather tough old stick one day this week.

Andrew Schu has field from which 3 or 4 crops have been taken each year for half Century.
to Andrew Schu, who lives about 6 miles north of Kalamazoo, belongs the distinction of owning the oldest alfalfa field in Kalamazoo county & one of the oldest fields in the set. Mr Schau's grandfather, P J Schau*, emigrated to america from Germany in the early '60s brining a large family with him, settling on the old Schu homestead on the River road in East Cooper.
In the spring of 870 he sent back to Germany for a small quantity of what what then called Lucerne seed, now known to us as alfalfa. He sowed the seed on a rich place of land, which contained plenty of lime.
This field of alfalfa's been mowed for 2 to 4 times every year for 51 years, excepting twice, when it was broken up for re seeding.
Mr. Schau's grandson, Andrew, believes this to have been the first field of alfalfa planted in this country and one of the first in the state. The field is now plowed up again for reseeding and on account of the number and strength of alfalfa roots, the work is proceeding with considerable difficulty.

Note1: Philip J Schaus is the father of William M Schaus.
Note2: Alfalfa - Cut 3 times a year, lucerne produces a protein-rich 14t DM per hectare without nitrogen fertiliser and on dry land. a, or Lucerne, a plant of the pea family grown primarily for forage, especially as hay. It is one of the most useful and widely grown hay crops in the world. Because of its high protein content, alfalfa is used as a food for almost all farm animals as hay, as silage. Because of its nitrogen-fixing properties, it is used in crop rotation to improve soil for other crops. When planted in combination with grasses, it helps prevent soil erosion. Alfalfa is also grown commercially for seed in arid or semiarid regions. Dehydrated alfalfa is ground into meal and used in feeding poultry and livestock. Indirectly, alfalfa is a source of honey, because bees gather substantial quantities of nectar from alfalfa flowers.
