  • Notes
    • Jeremiah is the son of Jonathan Duck & Hannah Ellerby.

. Jeremiah was born December 23 1838 on the Old Malton Road (now called Rexdale Blvd.), in Etobicoke Township. He was the eldest son of Jonathon & Hannah Duck. Jeremiah married twice. First to Elizabeth Lawrence on January 31, 1859 in the Church of St Mary's, Tullamore, Ontario, (Anglican) in the parish of Caledon East.  Reference to this found in the Church of England Marriage Register of the Congregations of Woodbridge Christ Church, Toronto Gore, St. John's Church, Graham's Corners and St. Mary's, Tullamore,  in the Counties of West Riding of York, of York and Peel Counties.  These records are retained at the Archives of the Anglican Church, Diocese of Toronto.

.  Of 10 children Elizabeth gave birth to, 7 survived. Elizabeth was confined to a wheel chair for the latter years of her life. This may have been the result of a horse and wagon accident on Weston Road at the Black Creek Hill while she was taking produce to the market in Toronto. She gave birth to a child while in this condition.
Jeremiah is listed in the Census Returns as a tailor, labourer & farmer. In his later years he was a preacher & would go from house to house spreading the gospel. His Bible is testimony to his use of the scriptures. He lived in Claireville, Etobicoke, Vaughan & Whitchurch Townships. In 1872 Jeremiah purchased Lot 3 on the North side of Toronto Street ( Albion Road ) in Claireville comprising of one half acre, with a pathway reserved to the Primitive Methodist Chapel on the north end of the property. In 1883 he signed a quit claim deed transferring the piece of land on which the church stood to 3 trustees, Henry Wray, James Moody & William Linton. In the 1881 Census he is listed as a farmer in Vaughan Township, with his wife Elizabeth & children John R., James T., Sarah C., Tamer Eliz., Peter Allan, & William Henry. They were living on Lot 3, East 60 acres, Conc. 9, which was the back part of Jeremiah's Aunt Mary Ann & her husband Thompson Porter's farm.

. Elizabeth died in 1889 & he remarried to Barbara Kennedy in 1894. Jeremiah & his second wife, Barbara, sold the remainder of the property in Claireville to his son-in-law, William Madgett. Jeremiah continued to live on the farm in Vaughan until 1902 when the move to Vivian in Whitchurch was made. Here he farmed Lot 34 East on the 6 Concession from 1902 until his death on May 23 1917. He is buried in the Union Cemetery at Pine Orchard, near Newmarket, Ontario.
While living in the Claireville area the family attended the Primitive Methodist Church. From the Archives of the United Church in Toronto, in the Methodist Year Books are records of subscriptions to the Missionary Funds for the Primitive Methodist Church in Claireville including entries from members of the Jeremiah Duck family from 1866 to 1880. After 1881/82 all collections stopped & the church ceased.
