- . 1903 Jul 24 - Man Killed By Lightning
the thunder storms that have passed over this section lately have been unusually severe, & it is our painful duty to record the death of Mr. Arhtur Willson by lightning on Monday afternoon.
Deceased was plowing in the field when storm came on. He evidently intended to finish his furrow before seeking shelter but the summons that knows no waiting called him to the bar of God without a moment's warning. Apparently the electric current went in at one side of his head came out the other, for the straw hat that he was wearing had a hole the size of a walnut over each ear & cut out as clean as if done by a bullet. The plow handle, which he held in his left hand was shattered & piece was broken off. The horse he was driving were knocked over & stunned. The hired man, Mr. Wm. Hughes, was plowing in the same field about 15 rods away. He also was partially stunned but looked around he saw Mr. Willson fall & the horses scrambling on the ground.Taking his jackknife he cut the harness so that the horses could get up without injuring each other & spoke to deceased but got no reply. He had been killed instantly. Hughes then went to Mr. Joshua Willson's house, which was nearest for assistance. A doctor was sent for & the terrible news spread like wildfire.
Deceased was a son of Mr. Joshua Willson on the 4th Con. Whitchurch & was in every way an honorable industrious & praiseworthy young man.
About 5 or 8 years ago he married a daughter of Mr. Ben Eves of Queen St., East Gwillimbury & sister of Walter Eves, the hog buyer & their matrimonial relations were exceeding happy. The parting is very sad under such exceptional circumstances & we joint the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved families.
The eldest brother, Mr. Albert Willson, came home from Belmont, Mass., to attend the funeral & comfort his aged & heart stricken parents.
The funeral Wednesday was one of the largest ever seen in the Whitchurch Tp. The remains were interred at Pine Orchard. the locality seems to be dangerous in respect to lightning for 2 years ago 2 cows were killed by electric current in the field adjoining. It is singular coincidence that deceased's brother, Mr. Edgar Willson, was stunned by lightning while working on his farm in Dakota about 3 weeks ago, but is recovering. - - -
