- There were many Passmore families in Devon in the 16th to 19th centuries, and it is unclear if or how they were related. An Internet document, "Passmore of Devon", by Gordon and Barbara Faulkner [www.faulkner-history.fsnet.co.uk/Passmore_frame.htm] has detailed information about a family of Passmores, starting in the 1500s, who lived in Chudleigh, Ashton, Exeter, Tiverton, and other places in Devon. Members of this family became Baptists in the 1700s, and later became members of "the Bretheren", a nonconformist Protestant sect.
Another set of Devon Passmores is chronicled in "The Pedigree of the Passmores of Passmore Hayes, Devon", by Charles E. Bernau, commissioned by Alfred E. Passmore in 1929. It is available on microfilm from the LDS Library [FHL British film 1559398 Item 5]. The village of Passmore Hayes is near Tiverton, Devon.
We have not yet been able to find a connection between our Passmores and any of these Devon Passmores.
There was a parish record of a marriage in Buckland Brewer, on 25 May, 1695, of William Parsmoor and Susanna Hisset. This was the first record of Passmores/Pasmors/Parsmoors.. and Hissets in the Buckland Brewer parish records, which went back to 1604.
It is assumed that all subsequent marriages and births of Passmores in the parish of Buckland Brewer stem from the children of William and Susanna, or of Samuel Parsmoor, who married Ann Harding in Buckland Brewer in 1704.
Possible births/parents of William:
16 Nov. 1663 to Thomas and Winnifred, Bodmin, Cornwall.
10 Sep. 1671 to Peter and ?, Beaford, Devon
12 Feb. 1673 to William and ?, Stoke Canon, Devon
23 Feb. 1673 to William and Mary, East Down, Devon
Of these locations, Beaford, Devon is closest to Buckland Brewer.
Another marriage of a William Pasmore to a Susanna Gendle was in St. Sidwell, Exeter in 1691.
Perhaps Samuel, who married in Buckland Brewer a few years after William, was a brother. The only births of a William andof a Samuel Pasmore to the same pair of parents were recorded in Hampshire in 1666 and 1672, respectively. The parents were William and Mary Pasmore, and they had at least 4 other births in Hampshire, and perhaps 3 others in Barnstaple, Devon. The records were found on line on the LDS web site, and came from non-conformist record index RG4-8.
The Buckland Brewer parish burial record shows a William Pasmore being buried on 7 Dec. 1737. This could be William himself, a son or a young grandson.
