  • Notes
    • It is unknown what the exact relationship was that Nicholas Callaghan had with the rest of the Callaghans of Marysville. That he WAS closely related is a certainty - he had to get a special dispensation to marry Ellen, as they were related to less than three degrees of consanguinity. His father, Nicholas Callaghan Sr. may have been a cousin to the three brothers. His mother was Margaret Desmond, sister of Johanna Desmond, (married to Daniel Callaghan Sr.).

Nicholas and Ellen lived in Marysville for a few years after their marriage before they moved to Con 2 Lot 29 in Thurlow, where they farmed for about 18 years. Two of their children died as infants. Ellen contracted Tuberculosis or 'consumption' as it was then known, and the family moved back to Marysville so Ellen could be near her family. After Ellen's death, Nicholas and his children later moved to Campbellford, Ontario where he worked in the newly opened Rathbun Lumber mill.

The next ten years brought the deaths of three more of Nicholas' children, all perished from "consumption". They had ten children.
