ELISHA KITCHEN
Elisha Kitchen mustered into Co. D, 23rd Michigan Infantry (the same regiment and company in which his brother, Freeman*, was serving) on 9 Apr 1864. He enlisted 29 Mar 1864 to serve for 3 years at age 23.
The February 1865 monthly report for the 23rd Infantry indicates Elisha died 13 November 1864 at Chattanooga, Tenn., “of wounds.” It is not known exactly where or when he was injured. He died while at GH2 in Chattanooga. He is buried at Chattanooga National Cemetery, Grave No. 8402.
Elisha's parents, Wilson and Permelia Kitchen, were early - Mar 1856 - settlers in Fremont Township, Tuscola County, Michigan, arriving second only to Fremont’s original pioneer, James Wells. The 1883 “History of Tuscola and Bay Counties …,” notes that the Kitchen farm was just across the road from the Wells farm.
Wilson Kitchen was a native of New Jersey, born there about 1817, but moved to Ontario before 1851. The 1851 Ontario census shows the family living in Blenheim, Oxford County. The family was Wilson, his wife Permelia, and four children: Elisha, age 12, Freeman, 10, Sidney, 7, and Martin, 4.
Permelia died on 25 Jan 1859, shortly after the family moved to Michigan. Wilson re-married to Charlotte Ann Hamilton, 3 May 1859. Wilson died 22 Nov 1892 at age 76. Charlotte died 28 Nov 1912. Wilson, Charlotte and Permelia are all buried in Fremont Township Cemetery, Tuscola County, Michigan.
* FREEMAN KITCHEN
Although two years younger than his brother Elisha, Freeman had enlisted earlier (14 Aug 1862) in Co. D, 23rd Michigan Infantry. He was one of many Mayville area volunteers to join the 23rd Michigan Infantry at its inception.
