• Notes

  Castle Hill Mansion, in Filleigh, Devon, where John was born, was one of the manors inhabited by the branches of the Fortescue family. It was said to be similar to the Buckland House manor. From Thomas Fortescue Lord Clermont, "A History of the Family of Fortescue in all its Branches", 2nd ed. : John Fortescue of Shebbear, 3d son of John Fortescue of Buckland-Filleigh by Thomazin, daughter of Humphrey Prideaux of Solden. According to "Buckland Fileigh - A Continuous Thread", by Jane Taylor, John Fortescue inherited from his father an interest in four farms: Chalhanger, two farms at West Heanton, and Ashland. He settled in Shebbear. His older brother William inherited the estate of Buckland Filleigh.
