- Inherited Buckland-Filleigh, as eldest son. According to the book, "Buckland Filleigh - A Continuous Thread", by Jane Taylor, John's allegiance was to the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War.
The will of John Fortescue is quoted in "Buckland Filleigh - A Continuous Thread", by Jane Taylor. It left a number of farm animals to his wife, including 8 horses, his 20 best ewes, and hogs and poultry. It also mentioned the crops grown on the estate: wheat, rye, barley, oats and peas. John's wife was also granted the Buckland Mill. To his sons were granted several properties: Ford in Milton Abbot, Chalhanger, and farms at West Heanton and Ashland. The will also mentioned large stands of timber in Buckland Wood, which were granted for use by the executors.
