- He was a Justice of Sussex County, N. J. (?)
Nathaniel PETTIT was born 1676 in Newtown ( now Elmhurst) Queens Co., Long Island, NY, and died 1768 in Hunterdon, NJ
His father had purchased land at Trenton in 1695. By 1723 Nathaniel was listed as a carpenter of Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, which indicates that he made a move from the vicinity of Trenton to Amwell Township between 1719 and 1723. By 1735 and with the purchase of 100 acres the Pettit homestead was probably in Holland Township (Spring Mills) or Alexandria Township of Hunterdon County. By 1749 sons of Nathaniel Pettit began moving north to Sussex County. 30 year old Thomas Pettit died
in Newton, Sussex, NJ in 1758.
Residences: In 1693 he purchased part of 700 acres on the Delaware at Trenton NJ
Unlike his Quaker parents Nathaniel Jr started as a Quaker but about 1724 helped to found St Andrews Episcopal at Ringoes, (which before 1776 moved to Lambertville NJ.)
