  • Notes
    • Austin's son James was appointed adminsitrator of Austin's estate when the will was probated April 1789. The probate papers are on file in the Annapolis County Court House.

Austin Smith and his brother Francis were among town officials in Orange County NY in 1775 and 1776.

      F. K. Smith writes, "At the beginning of the Revolution Austin Smith signed the Association Articles but appears to have changed his views and later he became a Loyalist (my capitalization). Not refraining from expressing their sympathies by both words and actions, he and others were for a time under arrest and the subjects of considerable attention from the Governor and other Officials. Later, he is found in Nova Scotia where at least two sons were with him in Annapolis County." [1, 2]
