  Catharine is the daughter Deborah Grover and Thomas Shepherd. Deborah Grover married JOSEPH COX, b. Sept. 15, 1679; d: between 1748 and 1750. This matrimonial alliance introduced him to one of the oldest families of the colony. Catharine Shepherd was a great granddaughter of William Lawrence Sr., one of the founders of Middletown, who is said to have been a son of Sir Henry Lawrence, President of Cromwell's Council, and Amy Peyton, whose family afterwards became prominent in Virginia.
