FERRIER FAMILY HISTORY
Ref: Douglas Hall of Forfar St. E., Fergus, Ontario.
. Grandfather: John Ferrier Sr., several children, John, Jean, James. Shoemaker in Dundee, Co. Forfar, Scotland. Married Apr 12, 1790 to Ann Ogilvie, daughter of John Ogilvie. John Jr. the shoemaker did not come to Canada, but their son James came in 1846.
. JAMES FERRIER SR. Born Jan 29 1802 in Dundee, Scotland to 1877. Millwright. Cousin of A D Ferrrier, who settled in Fergus in 1834.
Married March 22, 127 in Dundee to Janet Robb, daughter of Wm. Robb, never of Liff Parish. Janet was born Jan 14, 1805. 11 children, all born in Dunde, except George, whose name may have been added to his mother's stone in old part of McKeen Cemetery, E29. His date on stoned, died Feb 6, 1842, aged 2 yrs & 2 songs (Dec 1839). Janet Robb 1805-1850. 3 other children died in childhood in Scotland.
The family came to Garafraxa Twp. in 1846. James left his wife & family at the lakefront until he had located land, then they joined him, settling on 50 acres W quarter Lot 17, Con 7, 6th Line Gara. It is said that Janet rode on horseback through all kinds of weather to care for the sick.
James was a cabinet maker & a carpenter by trade. He built the 1 had story house on his own farm from brick hauled from Landoni's brickyard on lot 23th line. He also built a large red brick house on the Alpuagh farm, later the Sam Broadfoot farm, now mostly flooded by Lake Belwood. He made furniture for his own home & for his neighbors & some of it is still in fine condition. James also made coffins, as required and started lining them with white cotton satin for neighbor children who died of diphtheria. Ferries were staunch Presbyterians, members of St. Johns Belwood, walking to Fergus before 1854. Their youngest son was named George Milville Smellie Ferrier after Rev. Smellie who came to St. Andrews, Fergus in the summer of 1843 & led the larger part of the congregation to establish Melville Church the following summer in 'the Disruption'.

Monument: James Ferrier died 18 Aug, 1877. He is buried next to his wife in McKee's Cemetery. Monuments is recumbent & appears to have been completely buried for some time [until c. 2016]. It reads
