  • Notes
    • Birth: 1730
      New York, USA
      Death: 1796
      New York, USA

Jacobus Pickard was born about 1730 in Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York, a son of Nicholas and Anna Barbara (Weiser) Pickard. He married Gertrude Windecker about 1757 in Schenectady, New York and they would have a total of 15 children. Anna was born in 1758, followed by John in 1760, Lea and Isabel in 1762, and Anna in 1763.

Jacobus was a Private in the 2nd Company of the Tryon County Militia under Colonel Jacob Klock during the French and Indian War. He was at Burntsfield and German Flats, July 24-28, 1763. In August of 1763, there was an Indian raid at Burnell’s field in Genesee Flatts, in which Jacobus was among the men to respond. In 1765, Jacobus and Gertrude’s sixth child, Catherine, was born. She was followed by Joseph in 1767, Nicholas in 1769, Hartman and Maria in 1700, Jacob and Barbara in 1772, Hendrick in 1773, Conrad in 1774, and Rachel in 1776. During the American Revolution, Jacobus Pickard served in the 2nd Regiment of the Tryon County Militia under Colonel Jacob Klock. He was, as were many other Pickards, was probably present at the Battle of Oriskany, one of the bloodiest battles of the American Revolution.

In 1790, Jacobus was one of ten squatters who settled on the Canaueraga Flats along with nine others. Governor George Clinton ordered them to remove themselves from the area. The mission was undertaken by Colonel Williams Colbraith, high sheriff of Herkimer County, who escorted them where the village of Chittenango is located. The Pickards settled on the eastern part of the town. In 1790, he settled in Sullivan. On June 19, 1799, he sold part of lot 35, a two-mile strip of land, to Jonathan Pickard. It is unknown when Jacobus died.
