Notes Below by Roderick Angus Cameron (1949-XXXX)
William Duncan spoke Gaelic when he came to the US. His wife taught him to read and do math. She attended the University of Wisconsin. William Duncan was a homesteader; Chippewa County Treasurer (1907 - 1911, 1918 - 1922.) He was Chairman of Town of Anson for a time. Last words spoken when told King Edward VIII had abdicated to marry Wallace Simpson were, "The gol darn gilly," (fool in Gaelic.) Both he and Isabella were upset when son Duncan married Helen O'Connell because she was Irish. William Duncan was a member of Catholic Order of Forester, Knights of Columbus. Resided in the Town of Anson until 1907. William Duncan came to Chippewa County in 1882, same year he immigrated to United States (contrary to 1910 US Census data which lists date of arrival as 1878.) He was naturalized by the time of the 1900 Census.
