      DR. GEO. B. H. SWAYZE SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS
      Prominent Physician Helped Found Medical-Chirurgical College,
      Served in the Civil Ward

      Dr. George Banghart Henry Swayze, who was largely responsible for the founding of the Medico-Chirurgical College, died on Saturday, at his residence, 1726 North Twenty-second street. He was 81 years old.

      Dr. Swayze M. D., was born in Hope, Warren county, NJ, February 3, 1833. He studied medicine at the Jefferson Medical College, graduating in 1859. He first practiced at Mooresburg, Montour county, Pa., where in 1860 he married Margaret A, Simington.

      He enlisted in the Civil War and September 19, 1862, was appointed by the Surgeon General as Acting Surgeon of the Twentieth Regiment of Pennsylvania Militia. In 1863 he went to Mahanoy City, Pa., where he helped to start a local weekly newspaper and was made editor-in-chief. He came to Philadelphia in 1871 and opened an office on Columbia avenue near Eighteenth street.

      When the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia opened its doors April 4, 1881, Dr. Swayze was made professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was chosen dean of the faculty. As a regular editorial contributer of original articles, his services were sought by medical journals. On account of advancing years he retired fro active practice some five years ago. He is survived by a widow and two sons. Interment will take place at Mount Vernon Cemetery."
