  • Notes
    • According to the book "Buckland Fileigh - A continuous Thread", by Jane Taylor, Sir John Fortescue was the Chancellor and Chief Justice to Henry VI. The John Fortescue Society still exists at Exeter College, Oxford, and admits law students there.

Ebrington Manor, purchased by John, is said to be the oldest home of the Fortescues that is still standing.

The Fortescue family tree site, www.fortescue.org has this john Fortescue being born in 1395. He supported the House of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses. He accompanied Margaret of Anjou, wife of Henry VI, and her young son, Prince Edward, on their flight to Scotland, after which he was appointed Chancellor to Henry VI. He went with the Queen and her son in exile to Holland in 1463. He tutored Prince Edward there, and wrote a book for him, "De Laudibus Legum Angliae". He was said to have been taken prisoner after the final defeat of the Lancastrians at the Battle of Tewksbury in 1471. His book was finally published during the reign of Henry VIII>
