  • Notes
    • General Notes: Through a combination of studying a pedigree of the family of John Ash of Cornerrin, based on his will of 1680, and the Ash Manuscripts, compiled by Lt Colonel Thomas Ashe c.1735, it is possible to glean the following facts on the Ashe family. John Ashe of Corrnerrin was the son of Josias Ashe. In the register of St Columb's Cathedral, which dates from 1642, can be seen the baptism of S nna, daughter of Josias Ashe, on 13 December 1642. John Ashe of Corrnerrin was married three times. By his second wife Sarah, he had Captain Thomas Ashe. By his third wife Elizabeth he had George to whom he bequeathed Cornerrin, later known as Ashbrook.

In 1646, John Ashe was elected Sovereign of Belfast, having rendered 33 years of public service to the promotion of the town and the well-being of its inhabitants.

Extract from "The Town book of the Corporation of Belfast, 1613-1816" by Robert M. Young (1892)
1645: John Ash, gentleman of one of the Burgesses of the Borrough and Towne of Belfast, by lawfull presentacion from Captain Francis Meeke, Constable of the Castle of Belfast aforesaid, in the absence of the right honorable Edward Lord Viscount Chichester, upon the 24th day of June 1646, was elected and chosen in the office of Sovraigne of the said Borrough and to take the oath upon the 29th day of September next ensuing for the due execucion thereof for one whole yeare from thence to be compleat & ended according to the tyme in his Maties letters patents granted to the said Borrough lymitted.

ASHBROOK, in the co.of Londonderry, and province of Ulster, near the city of Londonderry, the seat of William Hamilton Ash, Esq., a magistrate and deputy lieutenant for the county. This mansion was built in 1686 by John Ash, Esq. It has a picturesque appearance and stands in a part of the country by no means deficient in acquired and natural advantages.

Extract from "The Ash MSS, written in the year 1735, by Lieut. Colonel Thomas Ash", published by Henry Tyler (1890)
John Ash, the eldest son of Josias, having buried his first wife, Thomasin, and his 2nd wife, Sarah, as is already mentioned, married his 3rd wife in 1668, in her uncle, Alderman Skipton's, house, within the liberty of Derry, Elisabeth, daughter of Capt. William Holland; by her he had 12 children; 11 of them were born in Corenerin, in the parish of Clandermont, near
Londonderry, to which place he removed after he left Killylane. The names of his and her children are Charity, Anne, Martha, Lydia, William, Stephen, George, Charity, Alexander, William, Richard, Phillis.
John Ash, the father, died, which was in November 1684.
